Watch a Guy Freak People Out By Floating in the Air on a Moving Bus

Though this prank video is an obvious attempt at force inducing viral-ity by Pepsi Max, it’s still a pretty fun watch. The magician Dynamo tricks people into thinking he can levitate by ‘magically’ following a bus around as it moves across London. Watch people freak out when they see him float.

Minimal Float Wall Desk: We’ll All Float on Okay

My two desks are quite cluttered. There’s no denying it, but something like this minimal desk might actually encourage you to cut down on the wires and clutter in your home office.

The Minimal Float Wall Desk can be wall-mounted at any height, making it either a sitting or a standing desk. It can be ordered in walnut or rift oak, and mounts sleekly onto any wall at the height you choose – assuming you have wall studs to mount it into. It’s got a full-length slide out tray for a keyboard, mouse, writing pad or other accessories.

The design is extremely clean, but there’s one problem: you’ll have to work extra hard to hide away all of your wires, because the exposed nature of this minimal desk seems to abhor wires of any kind!

You can get the Minimal Float Wall Desk on sale for $699(USD) over at the dlab shop – it’s normally priced at $1199, so that’s a great deal.

Floating Cars: This Is How the Year 2000 Should Have Looked

It’s already 2013, and we are still pretty far away from flying cars, which were predicted decades ago. Then again, maybe we aren’t. Check out these clever photographs, featuring Jetsons-like hovering cars.

French photographer Renaud Marion captured these photos and tweaked them to make the cars look like they’re floating off the ground. This series of photos are called Air Drive and they’re inspired by how he imagined flying cars would have looked when he was a child.

I hope to see flying cars on the road (sky?) one day, but then again, I can already imagine the accidents – never mind the insurance premiums.

DARPA CAAT is Like a Tank that Floats on Water

Whether or not you support the investment in military technology, you have to admit that DARPA comes up with some amazing technologies. A recent DARPA project is the Captive Air Amphibious Transporter (CAAT), which works much like a tank, except it floats on water.

Using air-filled pontoons attached to tank-like treads, the CAAT can drive across the surface of water or swamps at a high rate of speed. When out of the water, the amphibious vehicle can drive directly onto shore – even onto uneven surfaces. The vehicle is designed as part of DARPA’s Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform, which is designed to help support disaster relief from offshore ships. So I imagine these would be brought in on larger boats, and then drive into shore. It’s an impressive sight when you see it in action:

At this point, what you’re looking at here is a 1/5th scale prototype of the CAAT, and it’s not clear if it will eventually make it into full-scale production.

Levitating Light Bulb: Duck and Cover When There’s No Power

How many engineering students does it take to build a floating light bulb? Just one. University of Queensland student Chris Rieger combined magnetic levitation and wireless power transfer like peanut butter and jelly to create a fancy floating sandwich. And by sandwich I mean light bulb.

Watch the magic happen in the video below:

Rieger says he’s working on a much better version of the bulb, one that will have a built-in dimmer and height control. Drop a comment on YouTube if you’re interested in buying that improved model to help Rieger decide if it’s worth making multiple units.
