TellSpec Scanner Reveals What’s in Your Food: Food Label 2.0

If you’re a health buff or if you have food allergies, you probably have a mental list of edibles to avoid. But how can you be sure that the food that’s in front of you is up to your standards? That’s the idea behind TellSpec. It’s a small scanner that can supposedly tell you what’s in your food.

tellspec food scanner 620x404magnify

TellSpec has two primary parts: a low-power laser and a spectrometer. Simply put, substances in food reflect light from the laser in distinct ways. The spectrometer analyzes and records the reflections, then TellSpec sends this data online using your mobile device. The results are displayed on your device as well via an app. TellSpec can identify the amount of calories and sugar on the scanned item, as well as the presence of preservatives and allergens such as nuts and gluten. It can scan through plastic and glass so you can use it while buying or browsing food.

TellSpec’s app can do more than just identify ingredients. It can also keep track of your calorie intake and even help you self-diagnose if you’re allergic to a particular substance. Here’s a demo of a very early prototype of the TellSpec:

Looks like they’ve got a long to go to get the device down to size. But if you’re willing to take the gamble, you can pre-order TellSpec online for $320 (USD). There are also pre-order bundles for family use and for developers. Because it uses a cloud service, TellSpec will also require a subscription. When you buy the device, you get one year of free service but after that you need to pay either $7 a month or $70 a year for it to keep working. Check out TellSpec’s website or their Indiegogo campaign page for more info.

Temperfect Mug Will Keep Your Coffee/Tea At The Perfect Temperature

Temperfect Mug Will Keep Your Coffee/Tea At The Perfect TemperatureWhen it comes to the perfect cup of coffee, the temperature cannot be too hot otherwise it would be impossible to drink, and neither can it be too cold because then it’s kind of gross, but unfortunately coffee will get cold, and at times you will get a barista who unfortunately does not know what they are doing when they overheat the milk. Well if you think you know how to brew the perfect cup or know a barista who does a great job, and you would like to prevent your perfect cup of coffee from getting cold too fast, this is a Kickstarter project worth checking out.

Dubbed the Temperfect Mug, this is a mug that supposedly will bring coffee down to the perfect drinking temperature, and will apparently be able to keep it at said temperature for hours on end, and all of this is done is just 2 minutes. According to its creators, the secret to the Temperfect Mug is its insulation material which has the ability to now only draw out excess heat from the drink, but at the same time is able to transfer it back to the drink to maintain its temperature. To top things off, the mug does look pretty sleek and stylish.

It is a great idea for those who love their coffee or tea and want to enjoy it for hours without worrying about it becoming cold and disgusting. As it stands the creators of the Temperfect Mug has managed to raise over $181,000, far exceeding its initial goal of $23,500, so for more information, hit up its Kickstarter page for the details!

    The $500 TV Dinner

How much would you pay for a ready-to-eat dinner? Most people wouldn’t pay more than five or ten bucks, but this luxurious food platter by Chef Charlie Bigham might just convince a couple of folks to change their minds – and their perceptions – of what TV dinners are.

Most of the ones you’ve already tried are probably of the frozen, microwaveable variety. They’re not all that bad, but they aren’t particularly good either. London chef Chef Bigham’s dinner tray, called “Swish Pie,” on the other hand, should be more than just delicious because a description of what it contains is already enough to make most people’s mouths water.

The finest British lobster, wild turbot, fresh diver-caught scallops, Balik smoked salmon and oysters, all poached in our exquisite Dom Perignon champagne sauce and nestled beneath fresh white Alba truffle, creamy mashed Yukon Gold heritage potatoes and a crunchy 24-carat gold leaf crumb. Served in a 24-carat gold leaf tray with an amuse-bouche of Beluga caviar.

To guarantee the safe arrival of the Swish Pie, each dish will be delivered in a bespoke aluminium case by a professional security guard – who will be handcuffed to the ready meal until it’s been delivered to its buyer.

The entire meal costs £314.16 or about $516(USD), and can be purchased from Charlie Bingham’s.

The Greatest Innovation in Oreo Dunking Since Milk

The Greatest Innovation in Oreo Dunking Since Milk

Oreo might be trying to push its snack-sized mini cookies with this utterly brilliant way to dunk, but there’s no reason this hack can’t work with full-sized Oreo cookies as well—or any reasonably-sized cookie, for that matter. You’ll of course need access to a clean french press, but the other components—milk and cookies—should be easy to come by.

AmazonFresh Launches in San Francisco So You Can Avoid the Grocery Store

One of the things I really hate doing is going to the grocery store. It’s not only that it’s inconvenient, but it seems like every time I go I end up with a bucket full of stuff I really didn’t want. If you live in San Francisco, Amazon just launched its grocery delivery service in your town and you won’t ever have to go to the grocery store again.

    amazon fresh logo 620x339magnify

The service is called AmazonFresh and it was previously only available in LA and Seattle. The AmazonFresh service requires a yearly subscription similar to what Amazon Prime requires, though this service costs a rather hefty $299 per year. You do get the benefits of Amazon Prime as well for the money, and that fee covers all of your grocery deliveries for the year – assuming you order at least $35 worth at a time.

Once you subscribe you can get all sorts of fresh produce, meat, dairy, and dry goods delivered to your door. The deliveries can come the same day when booked by 10am, and the next morning before breakfast when booked by 10pm. You can choose a 3-hour time slot if you’d like your groceries to be left on your doorstep in insulated bags, or a one-hour timeslot for attended delivery. Amazon will even bring the groceries into your kitchen and take away the bags or shipping supplies used for delivery.

Thermos Designed a Mug For the Slowest Sipping Tea Drinkers

It’s supposed to be a beverage that you slowly slip and savor, but once you’ve brewed a cup of tea it’s a race against the clock—and thermodynamics—to enjoy it while it’s hot. A thick ceramic mug helps with that problem, but even better is the double-walled insulated engineering that went into Thermos’ new tea tumblers.
