How to Flip Food in a Pan [Video]

Some of you probably already know this but if you’re a new kid in the kitchen, here’s a great explainer on how to flip food in a pan: It’s not an up and down motion! You don’t lift the pan AT ALL. Instead, just slide the pan quickly back and forth and you’ll get the right flip with minimal mess. Flipping food like a BOSS. Or, I guess, a chef. [YouTube via BoingBoing] More »

Häagen-Dazs’ Ice Moon Ice Cream Cakes Will Take You to the Moon and Back

I’m not particularly fond of sweets but I’m willing to make an exception for Häagen-Dazs’ Ice Moon Ice Cream Cakes that are coming this Christmas. Who knew ice cream could be done up artistically?

Ice Moon WhiteWhat you see above looks like the moon (or a sculpture of it) but it’s actually Häagen-Dazs’ Ice Moon dessert. These ice cream cakes might look simple on the outside, but they’re just brimming with flavor and delightful fillings on the inside.

The white moon consists of a pistachio biscuit base, layers of macadamia nut ice cream and meringue and a coating of raspberry ice cream. The orange moon has crunchy chocolate at the bottom, layers of nutty ice cream and salted caramel and a coating of vanilla ice cream.

Ice Moon White Inside

The Ice Moon is a result of the efforts of Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien of Doshi Levien after the ice cream giant hired them to create the ice cream cakes for this Christmas season. I think they did a marvelous job at incorporating the jolly flavors of the holidays with the Ice Moon.

Ice Moon Orange

Here’s a look inside the orange Ice Moon:

Ice Moon Orange Inside

As to why they chose the moon, Doshi Levien explained:

We imagined the shape and texture of an ice cream scoop being like the moon as in a famous childhood Bollywood song. We were reminded of the stop frame movie Le Voyage dans la Lune by Georges Méliès. We were inspired by Armenian surrealist Léon Tutundjian’s relief work of 1929. We found some early examples of the ‘Bombes’ ice-cream that are near spherical.

Stuffing Cool Ranch Doritos in a Pepper Grinder Is How You Bottle Genius [Food]

Some people douse their meals in salt, pepper, even Tabasco sauce before even having a taste. It’s impossible to know if the food actually needs more seasoning—unless you’ve gone to the trouble of filling a pepper grinder with crushed up Cool Ranch Doritos. Then it’s guaranteed that whatever you’re eating will taste better with a few twists. More »

Deep-Fried Gadgets: Would You Like Fries with Your Big Mac(Book)?

Most of us will eat anything as long as it’s been battered and fried in hot oil. How about some deep-fried gadgets? Maybe served up in a bucket with the picture of Colonel Sanders on it. Well if you like your consumer electronics like you like your fast food, then read on.
deep fried gadgets
Artist Henry Hargreaves likes to deep fry all of the gadgets that we know and love. He doesn’t care about calories or artery clogging oil. He really just wants to burn and melt things in the name of artistic expression.

deep fried gadgets 1
He fried up stuff like Macbooks, Game Boys, iPhones, iPads, earbuds, you name it. They don’t look very appetizing, but they are probably better for you than most actual fried foods. Or not.

I think we’d all try to put things we’re not supposed to in the fry basket if we had access to a deep-fryer, just to see how they turned out.

Slice up this Dexter Cake Before Dexter Slices up Another Victim

Dexter returned for another season last night, and I haven’t watched it on my DVR yet – so don’t tell me what happened! The show is known for its gory kill-room scenes with its anti-hero serial killer/vigilante Dexter Morgan as he does in his victims. So for those of you with weak stomachs, this might not be for you – but if you like cake – and a little blood, then you’ll love this.

dexter kill room cake

This Dexter cake was posted by redditor gold-coin. And no he didn’t make it, and yes, it’s just a basic white cake with some fake blood on it, some red sprinkles and some action figures stuck on top, but it’s still pretty creative. I especially like the plastic wrap around the victim. Nice touch. Though I think the cake needs some plastic tarps draped around its base to complete the effect. The cake was posted in response to these equally awesome Dexter-inspired cupcakes.

Now I just need some blood slide candies, and my sweet tooth will be fulfilled.

What McDonald’s Beef Is Really Made Of [Video]

McDonald’s doesn’t exactly have the best reputation for beef quality but if you were expecting to find ammonia-drenched, gut particle-filled pink slime sludge goop de loop, well, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s all beef. You can see how they make it above. More »

Disney Awarded Patent for Interactive Cakes

Over the years, we’ve featured some pretty incredible cakes (and cupcakes) here on Technabob, but to date, we’ve never seen one that had projected, interactive images on it. Well, Disney, being Disney, has been working on the idea for a few years now, and recently was awarded a patent for the technology.

disney interactive cake patent 1

The patent abstract reads as follows:

A method for digitally augmenting or enhancing a food product such as the surface or top of a cake or other edible object. The method includes generating an augmentation media file based on a projection surface of the food product such as a digital movie or image that is mapped to the 3D topography of projection surface and that is projected on the food product using a properly aligned projector. Interactivity is provided by having the method include determining a modification or change of the 3D topography of the projection surface and, based upon the modification, generating a modified augmentation media file and operating the projector to use the modified augmentation media file to project a modified projected image on the food product. The method further provides interactivity by detecting a user interaction with the projection surface and generating a modified augmentation media file based on this tracked interaction.

So think Microsoft Surface PixelSense, but on a cake. Here it is projecting an image of a baby, turning into a backpack-wearing kid, and then into a basketball player. Sure, why not?

disney interactive cake patent

The technology could work with complex topographies and interact differently depending on the section. For instance, a cake could have a river rolling through the middle of a valley, and touching the water would make it splash or change directions without affecting the hills around it.

disney interactive cake patent 2

It could even display personalized messages on slices of cake as they are removed from the main cake.

disney interactive cake patent 3

As intellectual property lawyers are known to do, this patent protects Disney in the event that someone wants to make any food that uses a projector and lets you interact with its surface. Granted, the ideas of an interactive, augmented display already have tons of prior art, but in terms of baked goods, Disney was apparently in the clear.

This Gadget Eats Your Leftovers to Feed Your Plants, Everybody Wins

Humans are wasteful. We throw away so much food without a thought as to others who are not so fortunate. Well, I don’t have an answer for feeding the world, but this concept gadget wants to take your waste and feed plants with it instead.
plant feeder 1
Designed by Fanny Nilsson, the Re-FEED device takes your leftovers and it turns them into plant food by liquefying them. It pumps this goo directly into your flowerpots and it is all done from your countertop. Not bad. Just drop in your scraps and a blade chops up the mix and it is left to compost. Just add water and you have plant food.

plant feeder 2

Your plants will be very happy and healthy with this device around. Not sure if I would enjoy compost smell on my counter, but I love the idea here. The Re-Feed’s plastic casing has been treated with an odor absorbing compound for the smell, but who knows how well it would work. Hopefully this will make it into production so that plants can eat our garbage, even indoors.

Burger King Japan’s Kuro Burger Looks Like They Burned the Bun

I have nothing against the color black, but when it comes to my food, I’d prefer it to be not black. I don’t know what Burger King Japan was thinking when they rolled out their black-bunned Kuro Burger (JP), but it probably wasn’t about customers with my dining  preferences.

burger king black bun kuro burger a

That said, I still think Kuro Burger will be a huge hit with Japanese fast food lovers, because it’s too unusual to pass up with its black buns and black sauce.

The dough of the buns have been mixed with bamboo charcoal to turn it deathly black, while the sauce is a mixture of squid ink and spices to give it that creepily zesty oomph.

Oh, and did I mention that Burger King came up with this black burger as part of its fifth anniversary in Japan? They probably thought black was a festive color that was fit for the occasion. Burger Kings all over Japan will begin serving these black burgers on September 28th. If you happen to be in the area, give it a try and tell us if its any good.

Funny thing is, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a burger with a black bun – French chain Quick offered a special Darth Vader burger earlier this year with a similar look.

Epic Star Wars Cake is Epic

Sometimes you can’t just pick one favorite character from the Star Wars movies. Who says you have to? At least that’s the idea that one baker had when creating what could be the most awesome Star Wars cake ever. Ok, it’s not as incredibly crafted as the full-size Stormtrooper and Darth Vader cakes, but it’s still pretty great.

star wars mashup cake

This single cake combines Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Yoda into a single, epic cake masterpiece. Nobody seems to know who made this amazing cake, but whoever you are, I bend the knee to you. The only thing missing are Boba Fett and Stormtrooper layers but I suppose you could always pick those up here.
