Text-Based Multiplayer Shooter: Zork of Duty

Halo 4 just came out, and there’s never any shortage of multiplayer shooters available, but if you’ve already topped the leaderboard, fragged everyone, topped the fragleader or boarded everyone – my expertise regarding the current state of multiplayer combat games is, shall we say, non-existent – why not have a go at this text-based multiplayer shooter?

text based multiplayer shooter game by eigen lenk

This text-based multiplayer shooter is called… Text-based Multiplayer Shooter. It plays like the text-based adventure and role-playing games from the 70′s and 80′s. You type ‘go <direction>’ to move – e.g. go south – and then ‘fire’ to take a shot. As you can see I managed to hit a wall. Woohoo! Wall pwned! Here’s a more thorough look at the game courtesy of YouTuber CyBorg Plague (along with an ample does of swearing):

It’s the most frantic way to learn how to touch type. You can play Text-based Multiplayer Shooter for free on Eigen Lenk’s website. Bring your imagination with you.

MAG II Gun Controller reports for FPS duty on PS3 and PC from Nov 20th

MAG II Gun Controller reports for FPS duty on PS3 and PC from Nov 20th

Last time we saw a MAG gun controller, it was being splayed all over the FCC. But, that was some time ago; gamers with a gun habit will be twitching those trigger fingers for something new. One option? How about the MAG II? Initially seeing the light of day back at E3, the PS3- and PC-compatible controller has three sensitivity settings, along with motion sensing and gyroscopic induction-based motion tracking. Makers, All Interactive Entertainment, also say that future updates will enable new functions and game play modes. Pre-orders are open now, at a cost of around $150, with the full release set for November 20th. Aim and fire at the PR below if you want more info.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Surprise Trailer Packed with Cameos

Yesterday a new trailer for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II aired during Monday Night Football. If you missed that commercial during a potty break or a run to the refrigerator for frosty beverage, the surprise trailer is now available on YouTube. The trailer is packed with cameos from famous actors and little-known web personalities.

The surprise trailer was directed by Guy Ritchie, and the biggest actor in the trailer is Robert Downey Jr., who happens to be flying a jet in the trailer. Other celebrities in the trailer include a comedic actor from France named Omar Sy, FPSRussia, and iJustine. I think this might be my favorite trailer yet for the game.

The trailer shows different players each thinking they have the element of surprise and are about to kill an enemy. However, just as each of the characters is set to take their shot, someone else surprises them and the hunter becomes the hunted. Check out the new trailer below:

Medal of Honor: Warfighter Now Shipping

I’ve been a gamer all my life going all the way back to the original Atari console when I was a kid. I go through spurts where I play mostly driving games, but recently I’ve been walking around the game sections of my local stores looking for a decent shooter. Sadly, I haven’t been able find a decent one but I may go back now and pick up Medal of Honor: Warfighter because it’s now available.

The gritty FPS uses the awesome-looking Frostbite 2 Game Engine and has both multiplayer and a single player campaign mode. The game allows players to choose from 12 different Tier 1 units that hail from 10 different nations. The multiple player aspect of the game allows players to represent their nation of choice head-to-head an online competition.

The game also has a new feature called Fireteams, the game’s new, tight-knit online co-op mode. Fireteams are supported on eight real-world maps around the globe. The game is available in North America right now and will be available in Europe on October 26. You can pick the game up now for the Xbox 360, PS3, or PC.

‘Defiance’ blends basic cable sci-fi, MMO shooter action when it launches in spring 2013

'Defiance' blends basic cable scifi TV, MMO FPS action when it launches in the spring

With shows like Battlestar Galactica, all of the Stargates and even Eureka on ice, where will Syfy go when it runs out of places and/or marginal celebrities to tell ghost stories about? One answer may be a show slated to debut next spring called Defiance, which will depict an Earth populated by humans and aliens alike trying to pick up the pieces after years of war between the two have left the planet in pieces. The twist here is that the show will run along concurrently with a massively multiplayer shooter being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from the makers of RIFT that takes place in the same world. The team behind it has been posting content about the making of both sides of the project recently (check out Massively by Joystiq’s coverage for more info), as well as a trailer for the TV show, which you can check out after the break. We’re not sure if this will go over with any more of a splash than Syfy’s usual Saturday night monster-of-the-week flicks, but at least they’re trying. We’ll be keeping an eye out for this one in April one way or another because really what else would we do, watch Revolution?

Delta Six controller gets redesigned, Kickstarted

Delta Six controller gets redesigned, Kickstarted

Most video game controllers sporting a firearm form factor are a far cry from realistic — bright colors, odd shapes and obvious thumbsticks leave many accessories looking more like toys than weapons. Not David Kotkin’s Delta Six. This gun-shaped controller’s first prototype looked so much like a real rifle, Kotkin told us, it had to be redesigned. An orange tip, whitewashed body and a few less authentic looking components don’t make the Delta Six look any less believable as a digital soldier’s modern musket, but it does make it less likely to be mistaken for the real McCoy. The peripheral’s internals haven’t changed though — an accelerometer to help players aim and turn, cheek-sensing pressure sensors (for looking down the scope), faux-recoil and its assortment of modular components are still all on target.

Like all budding hardware projects these days, the Delta Six is looking towards the crowd to source its production. According to the peripheral’s Kickstarter page, the Delta Six will be available between July and August next year, boasting compatibility with the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U and even the OUYA. Pitching in $89 buys the basic submachine gun body (with a free rifle attachment for first-week buyers), and subsequent levels tack on additional attachments, bonus items and more. Kotkin needs $500,000 to make his rifle-shaped dream a reality. Like-minded FPS gamers can join him at the source link below. Not a dreamer? Feel free to read on for the official press release (plus a video and an additional image), instead.

007 Legends Video Game Now Shipping: No, I Expect You to Play, Mr. Bond.

I am a huge fan of James Bond. I grew up watching all the movies and always thought of Roger Moore as Bond more than Sean Connery. I have to admit though, out of all of the actors to play James Bond over the years, Daniel Craig is hands-down the best in my opinion. I love the more rugged and sophisticated killer in the new Bond films.

007 legends

Activision has announced the launch of a new video game called 007 Legends that has a story inspired by five classic (and not-so-classic) Bond films. The films include Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Moonraker, License to Kill, and Die Another Day. The best part about having missions based on these classic films for me is that Jaws is on the cover of the game and will undoubtedly be featured as a villain in the Moonraker mission.

Activision says that there are multiple levels in each mission and a sixth mission will be made available as download content to coincide with the release on November 9 of Skyfall. The game is available right now for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, and is currently on sale for $10 off at Amazon. A Windows PC version of the game will be offered on November 2, and it’s coming to the Wii U on December 4.

Delta Six controller brings fragging to life, worries your friends

Delta Six controller brings fragging to life, worries your friends

Chances are you know someone who takes their CoD a little too seriously — well, this peripheral is for them. The Delta Six controller is the latest brainchild of Avenger inventor David Kotkin, made to please hardcore FPS gamers with immersive and responsive input. A built-in accelerometer is used for aiming, while the faux recoil and acting out a reload will put you closer to real combat than an appearance on Stars Earn Stripes. The hardware also features a scattering of pressure sensors — allowing you, for example, to bring up the sights by meeting cheek with gun body, or if you’re feeling lazy, squeezing the side of it instead. Depending on your class bias, you can add and retract plastic from the main frame for an SMG, assault or sniper rifle form factor (see below for the gist). There’s no word on availability, or if it will actually improve your game, but the price is slated as $89 at launch. After the break is a short product demo in video form, although we suggest you skip straight to 1:30 to avoid the awkward live-action CTF scene.
