Plants vs. Zombies 2 launches worldwide on iOS, offers true free-to-play gaming

Plants vs Zombies 2 reaches iOS, freetoplay gaming intact

If you didn’t get early access to Plants vs. Zombies 2 on iOS, now’s your chance to play — PopCap’s backyard defense game has just launched worldwide on the App Store. The time travel-themed sequel significantly expands on the original with new plants, new zombies, between-round maps and touch-controlled power-ups. We’ve tried the game, and it’s a welcome refinement of a mostly familiar experience. For some, though, the big change in PvZ2 may be its sheer accessibility. This is a genuinely free-to-play title — you can see virtually everything it has to offer without paying a dime. In-app purchases are largely restricted to perks, such as coin packs. The developer doesn’t yet have a schedule for PvZ2 releases on other platforms, but those who have at least one iOS device can engage in herbal warfare at the source link.

EA revenue from downloads and web now overtaking that of disc-based games

Real Racing 3

If you think EA’s bottom line is primarily driven by endless Madden sequels, think again. In reporting its fiscal first quarter results, the studio has revealed that its digital businesses — DLC, mobile and the web — now generate more official revenue ($482 million) than disc-based games and distribution ($467 million). The company isn’t breaking down these figures, although it says that DLC and mobile are the main factors. We do know that iOS plays a crucial role — EA says that Apple is now its largest retail partner in terms of pure sales. The revenue shift isn’t completely surprising when the company is big on flagship mobile games and the free-to-play model, but it suggests that discs are losing some of their luster at one of the world’s largest developers.

Nikkei: Microsoft porting first-party game franchises to Android and iOS

Nikkei Microsoft porting its firstparty games to Android and iOS

Microsoft is selective about where its first-party game franchises appear — outside of lightweight releases like Kinectimals and Wordament, it prefers to use games as technology showcases and system sellers. It may not be picky for much longer, though, as Nikkei claims that Microsoft has reached a deal with Japan’s KLab to develop Android and iOS versions of its first-party titles. The deal reportedly includes adaptations of both PC and Xbox games, and would start with a free-to-play variant of Age of Empires that could launch before the end of the 2013 fiscal year. We’ve reached out to Microsoft to verify the rumor, but it’s clear that the arrangement could be a breakthrough for gamers who aren’t wedded to Microsoft’s existing mobile strategy.

Nintendo taps Steel Diver franchise for its first free-to-play game

Nintendo taps Steel Diver franchise for its first free-to-play game

Nintendo was coy when it announced that its first free-to-play game will launch before the end of next March, divulging only that it wouldn’t belong to the Mario or Pokemon franchises. However, the firm’s Shigeru Miyamoto revealed to IGN that its first gratis title would be a Steel Diver game — yes, as in the 3DS launch title — featuring four-person multiplayer. Don’t expect a rehash though, as the pricing model will change the game’s design. Kyoto’s gaming powerhouse hasn’t settled on what business model they’ll lean on quite yet, but CEO Satoru Iwata mentioned during an E3 analyst Q&A that its unpaid games would be “balanced and reasonable.” The Big N noted that “free-to-play games, if unbalanced, could result in some consumers paying extremely large amounts of money, and we can certainly not expect to build a good relationship with our consumers in this fashion.” There’s still no word regarding which consoles this free installment of Steel Diver will grace, but Miyamoto teases that it’s something they’re hoping to show “relatively soon.”

Nintendo to release its first freetoplay game by March 2014

Along with announcing a fresh Wii U lineup at E3 this week, Nintendo shared that it will launch its first free-to-play title during this fiscal year — that is, by the end of March 2014. Industry analyst David Gibson tweeted the news live from the press event, adding that the move is intended to “boost digital sales,” and confirming that the game won’t fall under the Mario or Pokemon franchises. Nintendo isn’t saying which platform its first free-to-play offering is destined for, but in any case this announcement is a good sign that the company is getting serious about downloadable content.

Free-To-Play Ridge Racer Driftopia Headed To PS3, PC In 2013

Namco Bandai’s Ridge Racer series has always been considered a more arcade-y racing game as its gameplay mechanics, especially when drifting, can be considered to be extremely exaggerated. The next game in the series will take an equally exaggerated step in another direction, but it isn’t to make its gameplay crazier, instead, it’s a step in the free-to-play direction.

Ridge Racer Driftopia will be the first Ridge Racer title that will be completely free-to-play as you can purchase cars, XP packs and repair kits to help enhance the experience. Just how much of the game will be free-to-play is unknown at this time, but we hope Namco Bandai will at least be able to deliver a Ridge Racer game for fans of the series without nickel-and-diming its customers by providing more DLC options than anything else, which it did with its Ridge Racer for Vita. Nintendo Wii U Delivers First Free-To-Play Game This Week With TANK! TANK! TANK!

Nintendo Wii U Delivers First Free To Play Game This Week With TANK! TANK! TANK!

Free-to-play titles have been gaining in popularity recently thanks in part to mobile gaming. $.99 games seem to be too rich for anyone’s blood, especially when they spent hundreds of dollars on their smartphone or tablet, which means free-to-play games are the way to go these days. The Wii U will receive its first free-to-play title this week, marking the first next-generation console to offer such an experience.

Namco’s TANK! TANK! TANK! was a launch title for the Wii U that originally retailed for $49.99, but starting this week, the game will go completely free-to-play once Nintendo’s eShop update goes into affect in Europe. (more…)

Kongregate breaks free of the browser, serves up downloadable games

Kongregate breaks free of the browser, serves up downloadable games

Kongregate has stepped out of its web browser boundaries by offering free-to-play downloadable desktop games alongside its existing catalog of browser-based titles. Only Super Monday Night Combat, Smashmuck Champions and Bomb Buddies are available for desktop play, but the outfit is set to beef up its selection in the following weeks. It’s not likely that this development will cause Steam to nervously eye its rearview mirror for a competitor on its coattails, but it’s interesting to see GameStop’s F2P game venture ever so slightly dip its toes into Valve’s territory. However, Gabe Newell’s platform may yet have some fiercer competition in the brick-and-mortar retailer’s Impulse storefront. Ready to stock up on the gratis Windows games?
