China’s Tencent will offer 10TB of free cloud storage to attract US users

Getting wind that users of Tencent’s Chinese-language cloud service have 10TB of free storage made many drool, but soon there’ll be no need for envy. Peter Zheng, one of the company’s vice presidents, announced last weekend that the complimentary storage setup is bound for the US and will likely be available in early 2014, PandoDaily reports. If you’re not familiar with the offer, folks who sign up for one of the firm’s QQ accounts and download its mobile cloud app score 1TB of gratis space, which will balloon closer to 10TB as needed. Sure, the idea of handing terabytes of your data to a foreign firm in an era of privacy concerns doesn’t inspire confidence, but the outfit has plans to earn your trust: Zheng says your bits will likely be stored in servers outside of China. Can’t wait for the freebie to make its way stateside? Tencent hopes to keep you distracted with the US launch of its Instagram-like image app, Story Camera, within two to three weeks.

Pokémon X/Y Creature Map: Catchtography

Redditor Bobdor made a very useful map that lists the Pokémon available in Pokémon X/Y based on where you can catch them. Instead of selling or even asking donations for the map, Bobdor chose to share it with all of us for free. That’s the spirit of Kalos at work. Depending on what you want to get from the games, the map could either be a minor or a major spoiler. I think it’s an essential cheat sheet, much like the type chart.

Aside from organizing the creatures by locale, Bobdor also included a list of Pokémon that you can only obtain through evolution or Friend Safari. The only major omission in Bobdor’s map is the list of unobtainable Pokémon that you can only have in Pokémon X/Y if you already got them in previous Pokémon games, but again Bobdor has done more than enough.

Ready to catch ‘em all? You can download Bobdor’s map as a PNG file or as a PDF file. Redditor Thorium also setup an online version of the map if for some reason you don’t want to keep a copy of it. Forget about Goomy, Honedge and Hawlucha; we should be making Bobdor memes and fan art.

FileSeek: Use Regular Expressions to Search File Contents

This article was written on November 04, 2010 by CyberNet.

search file contents-1.png

Most current operating systems include some sort of indexed file searching functionality, and with that you can often get instant results back on any query you perform. As I pointed out a few weeks ago those tools still leave some things to be desired… especially when dealing with searching the contents of files for some particular text.

FileSeek falls in line with the MariusSoft File Searcher in that it does a great job searching the contents of any file you desire. Both are free utilities that don’t require any files to be indexed prior to kicking off a search, and they are pretty fast at getting results. Both also let you use regular expressions to search for text in a file, but FileSeek is the only one that has Windows Explorer context menu integration. If you regularly perform file searches that can become quite useful.

Here are some of the features highlighted by the developer:

  • Search for text string matches inside any kind of file
  • Match Regular Expressions inside any kind of file
  • Search a folder and all of it’s sub-folders
  • Match 1 or more file patterns, like *.jpg, file?.txt or anything else you can imagine
  • Exclude 1 or more file patterns from your search, like *.exe or *.dll
  • Filter results by the last modified date
  • Never indexes files in the background

When you go to grab the download you may overlook the tiny text underneath the download button that offers a version without an installer. That’s the version I tend to lean towards, but you can always grab the installer version if you want all the shortcuts and stuff to be created for you. It’s free either way you decide to go.

Crytek Warface Free-to-Play FPS Launches: If It’s Free, It’s for Me

I’m a big fan of all of Crytek’s FPS video games. The thing I don’t like about buying new video games is that they can get a little expensive at about $60 each. Crytek has announced that its new and free to play FPS video game is now available called Warface. That’s right, a free to play Crytek quality videogame for PC gamers.

Crytek says that Warface has AAA production values and all of the quality expected from the studio even though it’s free. The game is playable directly in PC browsers and has both cooperative and competitive game modes. The game also has four soldier classes and places a special emphasis on teamwork.

Despite the game being free, Crytek also promises that the game will be constantly updated to provide fresh challenges. The game is now available in North America, Europe, and Turkey. It’s also available localized in English, French, German, and Turkish languages. Support for additional languages is coming in future.

Of course, nothing is completely free, and you can expect there to be many upgrades and add-ons available for a fee. Let’s hope the game isn’t one of those “pay to win” situations.

Xbox One Machinima App Lets You View Help Videos While Playing: “Xbox, I Suck”

Some older gamers complain that we’re spoiled today because of the wealth of guides, cheats and tips available online. If you’re one of those gamers, you’ll hate Machinima’s Xbox One app. The rest of you, feel free to rejoice. The app will let you view videos related to the game you’re currently playing. Because of the console’s multitasking feature, you’ll be able to watch videos and play your game at the same time.

xbox one machinima wingman app 620x351magnify

While playing a game, you can start the Machinima app by saying “Xbox, snap Machinima.” Once it opens, the app will then load Machinima videos that are related to the game you’re playing. You can then watch videos from the side of your screen, while your game takes up most of your display. If you have a mobile device, you’ll also have the option of using the app from inside Xbox SmartGlass.

I don’t know if the app can recognize what part of the game you’re playing or if you’ll have to search for a relevant video yourself. That said, Machinima is working on what it calls Wingman, a series of official help videos for certain Xbox One games that will have detailed and exclusive content. You can expect that feature to come with a price tag.

The Machinima app will be available on November 22, i.e. the same day the Xbox One is released. I wish Shin Megami Tensei IV had this feature built-in. Damn you Tokyo and your stupid overworld map!

Turn Your Social Media Profiles into Business Cards

Social media plays a big part in people’s lives these days. Not just in their personal lives, but also in what they do for a living as well. If you’re one of those people, then you might be interested in the social media-themed business card generators by Stephen Ou.

Over on SocialBusinessCard you can generate business card designs patterned after three of the largest social networks are available: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Creating your own personalized car using these designs is pretty easy. Just choose which one you want, link your actual social media account using the site’s app, and your card will be generated right after, using your digital profile as a starting point.

After editing the text on the card, you can then choose to upload the custom card design to your business card maker of your choice.

The most impressive part? Stephen just graduated high school, and already has launched several other successful online apps.

FreedomPop Launches Free Cell Phone Service

FreedomPop Launches Free Cell Phone Service

FreedomPop has certainly been making a name for itself over the past few months as they first set to upset ISPs by offering free broadband Internet earlier this year, and just a few months ago, the company announced they would be offering a completely free smartphone service. If you’ve been keeping an eye on FreedomPop’s free smartphone service, your day has finally arrived as the company’s freemium mobile phone service is now up and running.

Similar to FreedomPop’s other offerings, users will be given their first block of data for free, allowing users to pay for addition data if they require it. For its cell phone business, FreedomPop requires its users to purchase a compatible device up front, which subscribers will be given 500MB of data, 500 text messages and 200 anytime voice minutes for free each month. The only device FreedomPop has available for its customers to purchase is the HTC Evo Design 4G, which can be purchased on their website for $99.

If the HTC Evo Design 4G doesn’t make you want to immediately jump on the FreedomPop bandwagon, the company says they’ll be adding more Android handsets soon, although they didn’t say exactly when or what phones they were planning on adding.

NYC plans free public WiFi expansion in all five boroughs by December 2013

    Changing NYC

A handful of neighborhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx will have high-speed WiFi access available for businesses and residents by the end of this year. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an expansion today that’ll roll out over the next few months, lighting up parts of downtown Brooklyn, lower Manhattan, Harlem and other areas by December 2013. Companies have invested $3.4 million in the new infrastructure, and the city has contributed $900,000 to get the job done. We’re still a long way from having a city blanketed in completely free high-speed wireless internet, but with widespread availability in key areas, thousands of residents and smaller businesses should be able to drop their current internet providers before the ball drops to welcome 2014.

Web Development RPG Skill Tree: Dungeons & Developers

If you love playing RPGs, perhaps you’ve imagined what skills and prerequisites you’d need to have in the real world to reach your desired job or level of success. The folks at web development agency 352 Media thought of doing the same thing to their profession and created Dungeons & Developers, an RPG-style skill tree that outlines what you need to learn to become a master web developer.

    dungeons and developers

As with a typical RPG, each icon in the tree represents a skill. The skills involve learning about things like CSS, AJAX & APIs and Advanced DB Management. When you learn a skill, your character gains stats and unlocks more advanced skills. But 352 Media took their geeky project a step further and made it possible so you could actually use the skill tree to help you learn about web development and keep track of your progress while you’re learning. Each skill contains a link to an educational resource such as a tutorial. Your skill tree is tied to a unique URL, so you can bookmark it to save your progress, then check back to see if you’re bound to level up.

    dungeons and developers 2

Once you’ve learned a skill, simply left click its icon to add a point into it. Right-click on a learned skill to subtract a point. You cheater. Speaking of cheating, Dungeons & Developers also has a god mode. 352 Media says you can unlock 100% completion if you “go old school.”

    dungeons and developers 3

Head to Dungeons & Developers to check out the skill tree. As a fan of RPGs I can’t help but point out that the tree is misleading. It’s missing a few arrows for the other prerequisites needed to unlock the ultimate skill. It’s no biggie though, just know that all of the skills at the second to the last row need to be learned before you can unlock Web Development Mastery. The earliest you can do that is at level 26, so get grinding!
