3D Printed Google Glass Frame: No One Will Know the Difference

If Google Glass takes off, I think that it’s going to be a status symbol miles above any (current) gadget. The reason is obvious: the damned thing sits on your face, fully visible for everyone to see/want/hate. If you want to get on the hype train early – or if you want to try and build your own wearable computer – you can 3D print this unofficial 3D model of Google Glass’ frame.

The 3D model was made by Sunny Gao, shown above wearing the resulting 3D printed frame.

Gao uploaded the template as a Google SketchUp file; you can download it from his Baidu account if you wish. Now practice saying, “Okay Glass… damn it’s out of battery”, and you’re good to go.

Filedrop Wireless File Sharing: Dropbox Lite

A couple of months ago we found out about Instashare, an app that lets you transfer files from an iOS device to an OS X computer and vice versa. Filedrop is a lot like Instashare, but it has a couple of significant features that make it seem like the better of the two. The best part? Filedrop is also free.

filedrop file sharing app

Like Instashare, Filedrop lets you wirelessly transfer files between two computers as long as both are in the same local network, without the inconvenience of setting up shared drives. The great thing about Filedrop is that it works with both Windows and Macs; soon the developer behind it will also release iOS and Android versions of the program as well. Aside from transferring files, Filedrop also lets you stream photos and audio files from one device to another. This feature is great for impromptu presentations or other instances where you don’t necessarily want to leave a copy of a file on another computer.

Here’s proof of Filedrop’s cross-platform compatibility:

You can download Filedrop from its official website. For larger file transfers, you’ll be better off just using a flash drive. If you want to keep your files synced between devices, then you’ll be better off with a cloud service like Dropbox. But for quick sharing and copying I reckon Filedrop is better than either of those long term options. I for one can’t wait for its mobile apps.

T-Mobile trade-in offer drops iPhone 5 upfront price to $0 for 4, 4S owners

As T-Mobile prepares to officially offer the iPhone for the first time, it’s trying to pump up the lure with a trade-in offer for owners of the 4 and 4S models. Available through mid-June, the promotion lets iPhone 4 and 4S owners trade in their current device for an AWS HSPA+ friendly iPhone 5 for no money upfront (with monthly payments) under its new no-contract Simple Choice Plans. Additionally, depending on the condition of the hardware being traded in, customers can get a credit of up to $120 to be used against those payments (knocking it down to $15 from $20, for example) their usual bill or accessories. If last month’s colorful presentation wasn’t enough to pull you to T-Mobile from another carrier, does this new offer sweeten the deal enough? A full breakdown follows below in the press release, sales start Friday.

Boxee TV becomes Boxee Cloud DVR, adds free ‘Basic’ DVR service

Boxee TV becomes Boxee Cloud DVR, adds free 'Basic' DVR service

Following the trend of everything accentuating its connection to the “cloud,” Boxee has rebranded its new box as the Boxee Cloud DVR. GigaOm reports the company made the shift to emphasize its DVR features as a differentiator from other $99 set-tops like those offered by Roku and Apple. Other than the name change and a website redesign, one other new tack is a free “Basic” service package. Buyers still get the “All-access” $10 service tier free for a month upfront on a trial basis, which has unlimited storage and playback across different devices. Once that runs out however, they can opt for basic service where cloud-stored DVR recordings are limited to 5 hours of monthly playback on the box itself and expire after 90 days. While the DVR service’s availability is still limited to eight markets, the plan is to expand to 26 by the end of this year. Once it rolls out to more areas and the DVR features come out of beta, we’ll see if buyers are ready to give this second attempt at blending online and OTA video a shot.

Marvel Attempts To Give Away Over 700 Comics For Free Again

Marvel Attempts To Give Away Over 700 Comics For Free Again

Last month, Marvel attempted to give away over 700 digital comics for free within a short period of time, which the outcome didn’t exactly go as smooth as they had originally anticipated. It looks like the company doesn’t want to disappoint its fans and new, potential customers as they’re going to give it another try.

Those who are interested in taking Marvel up on their offer of over 700 #1 issues will have from now up until midnight ET tomorrow (4/9/13) to sign up to receive invites from the company. The invites will be used as a way to control just how many people are downloading their free comics so they don’t fumble the process of giving away their comics again. Once you completed the signup process, you’ll be able to start your download spree this Thursday. Barnes and Noble giving away Nook Simple Touch with every Nook HD+ purchase in limited promo

Barnes and Noble

Americans love a good bargain — especially, when it’s a twofer. Barnes and Noble, arguably the only real competitor to Amazon’s Kindle juggernaut, has just announced a promotion to get as many of its Nook readers into consumers’ hands as possible. Starting March 24th and running until the end of the month, consumers that purchase the Nook HD+ online, in-store or at select big box retailers will also be given a free Nook Simple Touch. The limited promotion comes hot on the heels of rumors that B&N would start to de-emphasize hardware production for the Nook line in favor of its content services; a rumor the company publicly shot down. Still, there’s no denying e-reader market share’s been an uphill battle for B&N, even if the segment is seeing marginal year-over-year increases. Numbers aside, if you’ve been holding out on joining the digital reading fray because of cost, now’s the time to make the switch.

Amazon Appstore celebrates its second year with free apps, cake (for today only)

Amazon Appstore celebrates its second year with free apps, cake for today only

Did the word free in the headline grab your attention, or was it the cake? Either way, Amazon’s Appstore is throwing a party to mark its second birthday, and there’s a goody bag of software for anyone who attends. It’s been a good month for Android users, as Google’s Play store had its own shindig recently, and like last year, Amazon’s been treating Appstore patrons to discounts all week. For its official anniversary today, though, a tray-full of apps can be downloaded gratis. Admittedly, the selection isn’t fantastic, but you should find one or two things worth at least the time it takes to click ’em — Chu Chu Rocket, may we suggest (long live Dreamcast!). Remember, you’ve gotta be quick, as the offers expire at the end of the day. But enough from us. Head to the source link for cake and more.

Spotify lifts the five-play cap per track for free listening in the UK

Spotify lifts the fiveplay cap on free listening in the UK

There’s been a Sword of Damocles looming for months over Spotify’s free tier: after a reprieve, some listeners past the six-month trial phase have been capped at five plays per track. Spotify must not want to kill the joy of a favorite album, as it’s lifting that cap for UK members. Like most of their friends on the platform, Brits now just have to cope with the usual ads and 10-hour monthly cap if they’re not keen on paying for a subscription. With only the French apparently left facing the five-play limit — qu’est-ce que c’est l’obstacle? — it’s clear that Spotify sees value in softening the hard sell for its paid service.

Samsung Galaxy Commercial’s ‘Unicorn Apocalypse’ Game Is A Thing Now

We’re sure by now, you’ve seen Samsung’s business-focused commercials where they originally took aim at BlackBerry and Apple, but have since moved on to talk about how the Galaxy S3 can be used in a business environment. The commercials centered around a fictional game called “Unicorn Apocalypse,” which today turned into an actual product.

Unicorn Apocalypse is now available on the Google Play store for you Android users, especially you Galaxy S3 owners, to download. The game can easily be seen as a ripoff of Adult Swim’s Robot Unicorn Attack as you play as a unicorn in an endless runner-type game where you make your way through a number of obstacles to see how far you can travel.

Considering the game is completely free, you shouldn’t expect a worthwhile game here as it appears its littered with bugs and the animation doesn’t seem to be as smooth as Robot Unicorn Attack. If you’d like to get swept up by the Unicorn Apocalypse frenzy you’ve seen in Samsung’s recent commercials, then by all means, download it on the Google Play store.
