Marvel offers over 700 free first issue digital comics, might involve great powers and responsibilities

Marvel offers over 700 free first issue digital comics,

Looking to revise the whys, hows and who’s who of the Marvel universe? Well, the movie-spinning comic book company wants to help you out, offering hundreds of first issue editions across the company’s entire history. The free digital editions will cover perennial favorites like Spider-Man, the X-Men and Avengers, as well as slightly less mainstream hits and spin-offs. The promotion kicked off yesterday and — tying in with the company’s presence at SXSW — will run until 11PM ET on Tuesday. The titles can be downloaded through either Marvel’s official comics app or its web-based digital comics shop, although it appears US readers are having more luck downloading the digital comics — we’re getting error messages when trying to access it elsewhere. Of course, if you’ve already signed up to Marvel’s Unlimited subscription service, there might not much here to pull you in, but this limited-time offer is unashamedly courting new readers and comic dabblers. If that sounds like you, start hunting down those hundreds of freebies at the source.

Netflix Gives Tattooed Fan One Year Of Free Service

Netflix Gives Tattooed Fan One Year Of Free Service

We think it’s safe to say the majority of people out there, especially if you own a video game console or any other device that offers the ability to watch streaming video online, have a Netflix account. $8 a month to be able to access a rather large library of videos at the drop of a hat is one many people can’t pass up, but would you consider saving $96 dollars by defacing your body with a corporate logo?

Twitter user @TheRealMyron decided he enjoyed Netflix so much, that he would get the company’s logo tattooed on his arm in one of the worst tattoos we’ve seen in the past couple of months. Fortunately, Netflix caught wind of his dedication to their service and went ahead and gave him a free year of the service.

In case you were wondering, Myron didn’t get his tattoo in order to receive a free year of service. He had the tattoo done because he was a devoted fan, which is actually more sad than we originally thought. I mean, I love a good Twinkie, but there’s no way I’d deface a piece of my favorite body to get a tattoo of one, especially if it turns into a devil Twinkie.

Angry Birds for iOS Now Completely Free For The First Time

Angry Birds for iOS Now Completely Free For The First Time

The original Angry Birds game continues to break records as during this past Christmas break, the game was downloaded 30 million times in just one week. There’s no doubt if you have a smartphone or tablet, you probably have Angry Birds on it. But considering Angry Birds has been around since late 2009, it has never once been available for free for iOS, even though Android users have always lived in a free Angry Birds world. That changes today.

Rovio’s Angry Birds game, the one that started its claim to fame, is now completely free on both iPhone and iPod Touch (previously $.99) and its HD version on iPad (previously $2.99). This marks the first time Angry Birds has gone free and it’s expected Apple will soon be promoting the game as their ‘free app of the week’ soon.

Rovio has yet to make the official announcement at the time of this publication on any of their social networks of blog, which we’re sure it has more to do with waiting for the free version to be made available across all App Stores than to do with the company just forgetting Angry Birds was free for the first time in its history.

FreedomPop Sets To Upset ISPs By Offering Free Broadband Internet

As important as having a reliable home Internet connection is, we know there are people out there who simply can’t afford an additional $50 a month so they could constantly watch cat videos on their Facebook wall. There aren’t many cheap alternatives available in the U.S., but one company is introducing such a service today.

FreemPop offers a broadband plan for its customers to use up to 1GB a month for free as well as an additional tier of 10GB a month for $10. This kind of service would be extremely useful for Internet subscribers who are still stuck on dial-up and would like to be able to have a dedicated connection from their home. (more…)

Roll20 Online Tabletop Will Be a Critical Hit with Game Masters

It’s been at least a decade since I last played a tabletop RPG, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are programs out there that augment players’ pens and papers with mice and keyboards. But here’s one that seems very easy to use. It’s called Roll20, a highly customizable web-based virtual tabletop.

roll20 online virtual tabletop

I think the best way to describe Roll20 is that it’s an image editor for dungeon masters with a video chat app added on to it. If that sounds intimidating, don’t be. Its tools are mostly straightforward and employ commonly used commands like copy, paste and drag-and-drop. It also has a built-in search engine for assets, so you can go in empty-handed, look for characters, maps and even soundtracks, then setup your play area, all from within the app. It also has a dice-rolling feature that can even show a 3D dice onscreen to all of your party members. Don’t have any tabletop playmates? Don’t worry – Roll20 lets you join public games! How awesome is that? Watch the overview to get a better idea of what you can do with Roll20:

The best thing about Roll20 is that it’s free. The group behind it makes money by selling premium assets like character art and maps, which is entirely optional especially if your DM is awesome enough to make custom art for your adventures. Sign up at the Roll20 website and start building the adventure of your dreams. And your friends’ nightmares.

Paid Twitter Alternative App.net Introduces Free Tier

App.net was launched last year, and it was a created as a Twitter alternative for companies and organizations who want a private social networking solution. The App.net social networking service is no longer just for paying members. Earlier this week, they launched a free tier.

app dot net free tier

Free accounts can follow a maximum of 40 users, have 500MB of available storage, and can upload files up to 10MB. In order to get access, you’ll need an invite from a paid member.

Paid members can earn additional file storage by inviting friends. Both parties will get an extra 100MB if the invited member follows at least 5 other accounts, and the invited member authorizes a third-party app.

Do you guys see a need for an alternative to Twitter?

EA Real Racing 3 to Be a Freemium Title

I’m honestly not real sure what I think about freemium video games for mobile users. It’s nice that you don’t have to pay for the game, but often you have to pay for every little upgrade and it usually works out to be much more expensive than just paying the five or six bucks up front to own the complete game.

Many of the “free-to-play” games have incredibly overpriced in-game purchases for things that you really need to be able to play effectively.

I hope that’s not what EA is doing with the coming video game for mobile users called Real Racing 3. The game will be free for Android and iOS gamers as of February 28. Previous titles in the franchise sold for $4.99 on the iPhone. You can bet in-game purchases will make up a big part of the business model for this game.

Will have to wait until the game launches to see exactly what EA is offering. I fear that gamers will have to pay a dollar more for each of the cars they want to purchase or unlock, which could add up quickly. Personally, I preferred the old days when you simply bought a video game, and it came with everything.

Netflix now streaming ‘House of Cards’ season premiere at no cost, hopes you get hooked

Netflix now streaming 'House of Cards' season premiere at no cost, hopes you get hooked

Just as it had promised, Netflix today released its original series House of Cards to its many, many subscribers. There’s more good news, however, as the the streaming giant’s giving those without the necessary account credentials a chance to see what the show is all about, giving non-paid users access to the very first episode at no cost. Meanwhile, those who shell out the monthly fee will be able to catch all 13 episodes of House of Cards in one go, with Netflix obviously taking a different approach than what we’re accustomed to seeing in new series from the likes of HBO or Showtime. Naturally, should folks like what they see from Kevin Spacey, Kate Mara and the rest of the cast, they’ll have to sign up for the service in order to keep up with the story — which, we’d say, is exactly what Netflix wishes for. Have some time to spare? Then hit that source link below to watch the House of Cards premiere (that’s assuming you haven’t done so already, of course).
