Gmail phone calls remain free of charge in 2013 for US and Canada

It may be an expected holiday gift, but it’s still a nice one: Google’s VoIP service in Gmail will remain free of charge for calls within the United States and Canada in 2013. A note on the Gmail Blog announced as much today; the news ushers in a thrilling third year of free Google Voice service for US and Canadian customers, right through the standard Gmail interface. Of course, we prefer the retro-inspired phone booth that Google showed off back in 2010 when the service was first announced, but free is free. Now, what to get for the megacorporation that has everything. We’re thinking … Furby? Probably a Furby.

WhatsApp Messenger: Now Free for iOS

WhatsApp is arguably one of the most popular cross-platform messenger apps available out there. Though until now, WhatsApp hasn’t been free on iOS. You had to shell out $0.99 to get it on your iPhone. Well, for a limited time, WhatsApp is free.

whatsapp free

Other platforms could use WhatsApp for free, but for some reason iOS users had to pay up. This change will probably make many users download it, and it will boost the users of the service, which isn’t a bad thing. I wonder how the WhatsApp network will handle the additional load, though.

There are many other messengers, like Viber, Kik, Line, and more that are also free. These days, when you’re in range of a Wi-Fi network, you can definitely save money compared to your carrier’s messaging services, since these sort of messengers replace text and voice messaging very efficiently.

Snapseed launches on Android with Google+ integration, now completely free

Snapseed launches on Android with Google+ integration, now completely free

While this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, today Google put to rest any lingering doubts about keeping Snapseed alive and well. After acquiring Nik Software last September, Google’s just launched Snapseed for Android and refreshed the existing iOS app. The Android version features seamless Google+ integration (complete with support for Instant Upload) and the iOS version gains a few additional filters. Better yet, the app is now completely free on both platforms (it was $4.99 in the App Store).

If you’re not familiar with Snapseed, it’s an incredibly powerful yet easy-to-use photo editor based on Nik Software’s award-winning professional-grade imaging tools. The app provides a super-intuitive gesture-based UI to capture, tweak, enhance and share pictures. As such, it’s more advanced than Instagram, but far simpler than Photoshop Touch. It’s available for phones, tablets, Macs and PCs (no word from Google on whether the desktop version was also updated).

We spent some time with Snapseed for Android yesterday and it looks and feels pretty much identical to the iOS version — the user experience is just as polished and responsive. In the main screen, you’ll find a new button which lets you post an image directly to Google+ via the same UI as the the Google+ app. There’s a separate button to save pictures to the gallery (this also sends photos to Google+ if you’ve enabled Instant Upload in the Google+ app). Want more info? Peek at our IRL post and the galleries below.

Pokémon Fan Remakes Gold/Silver into a 3D RPG: Hint Hint, Game Freak

Last year we looked at a fan made Pokémon mod for Minecraft. Pokémon 3D might be better than that. Currently in development by another Poké fan named Nils Drescher aka Nilllzz, the game is a 3D recreation of Pokémon Gold/Silver. Players can go around Johto and meet its residents face to blocky face in first- or third-person, and of course pit monsters against each other.

Below is a brief video showcasing the game world as it appears now. You can skip to about 2:29 in the video to see a Pokémon battle:

Here’s a more in-depth look at the game courtesy of YouTuber Valkenhyne:

You can download the latest version of Pokémon 3D from Indie DB or Google Docs. Unfortunately for Nintendo fans, the game is for Windows PCs only. I highly suggest that you read Nilllzz’s blog – or at least his blog’s About page – so you can learn more about the game’s current features and possible fixes.

Portal Ported to Calculators: Now You’re Playing at Math Class

Earlier this year we saw a calculator playing Pokémon via a Game Boy Color emulator. Redditor Builderboy2005 has made something way better (or worse, depending on your expectations). Portal Prelude, a game for Texas Instruments calculators. It’s not the original game, but it does feature its space-warping mechanics.

portal t1 83 ti 84 calculator by builderboy

Like the official Valve games Portal Prelude takes place at Aperture Laboratories, but “long before GLaDOS ever ran the facility.” It comes with 38 testing chambers and even has a level editor. The game is only compatible with Texas Instruments’ Ti-83 and Ti-84 series of calculators. You can watch the video below to see how it plays, but if you intend to play the game don’t watch the video all the way through because it shows how to solve the puzzles.

You can download Portal Prelude for free on Omnimaga. Builderboy and Omnimaga both pointed out that there are calculator emulators for the PC that you might be able to use to run this game, but not only is that method probably illegal, I think it also ruins some of the magic of playing Portal on a freakin’ calculator.

Samsung TecTiles 3.0 update offers more options for NFC tagging, now available in Play Store

Samsung TecTiles 30 announced

Samsung’s NFC tagging app — known as TecTiles — made its official debut in June, but the company isn’t putting a halt to its progression anytime soon. This morning Sammy announced version 3.0 of the app, which includes various enhancements that allow for better customization. Among the new features, you can choose from a larger selection of settings that can be programmed into the tags, and you’ll also have the ability to send pre-written emails to a specified address, update your Google+ status, store a history of your profiles, customize preloaded profiles and create private tags that can only be read by your phone. The new refresh is ready to go in the Play Store, so head on over to download it for free — provided, of course, you’ve forked over $15 for a pack of five tags. The press release, along with a full list of supported devices, can be found past the break.

PokéMMO: The Very Best MMO?

I wouldn’t be surprised if millions of Pokémon fans have been wishing for years for a MMO version of their beloved game. Nintendo may soon have more reason to consider making such a game. And I’m not talking about the impending release of World of Warcraft’s Mists of Pandaria expansion and its Pet Battle System. I’m talking about a fan-made effort called PokéMMO.

pokemmo

PokéMMO is a Windows MMO based on the Gameboy Advance version of Pokémon Fire Red. Currently in its alpha stage, the game is a lot like most MMOs, but with the beloved monsters and battling system. The picture above says it all. If you’re a Pokémon fan, the trailer below might make you faint with joy. Skip to about 1:10 to see its gameplay.

This game redefines the meaning of PvP. Head to PokéMMO’s website to sign up and play for free. Again, the game is still in alpha so expect a lot of bugs and missing content and features – this FAQ highlights some of them.
