Personas Offers Better Firefox Skinning

This article was written on December 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

Firefox Personas One of the things that the Opera browser does way better than Firefox is skinning. In Opera you can go to their skin site, find a theme that you want to install, and preview it immediately in the browser. No restart is required.

Mozilla looks as though they are experimenting with a similar method via an extension called Personas. With Personas you’ll be able to perform basic skinning operations in Firefox without ever needing to restart the browser.

All of the goodness happens in the bottom-left corner of the Status Bar. That’s where a little icon will appear once you’ve installed the extension, and clicking on that icon will immediately present a list of themes that can be chosen. They’re organized according to the most popular, newest ones, and also broken up into categories. As of right now there are a few dozen different themes available for Personas users.

It’s important to note that these themes are not the same as the ones you download from Mozilla’s add-on site. The Personas themes do not skin any of the buttons or the Control Panel area, and the only changes you’ll really see is a new background image behind the Menus, Address Bar, Bookmarks, Tabs, and Status Bar. Despite being such a basic skinning alternative I did find that the themes give Firefox a refreshing appearance.

Now one can only hope that this will result in full skinning capabilities down the road, and that they’ll apply a similar technology to extension installation. Maybe Mozilla will be able to make restarting the browser a thing of the past!

Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Released

This article was written on October 26, 2006 by CyberNet.

Ubuntu F-Spot

The excitement continues with the release of Ubuntu 6.10 today! You know what is really amazing with Ubuntu 6.10 is that they were able to make their scheduled release date without having any setbacks. So what’s new in this release?

  • Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool
  • F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites such as Flickr
  • GNOME 2.16, which in addition to new features such as enhanced power management, makes the GNOME desktop more secure, faster and more stable
  • Upstart, a replacement start-up manager offering a cleaner design, eye-catching effects and a substantially faster boot time
  • The latest Firefox web browser, which offers inline spell check support in web forms, easy recovery of crashed sessions, built-in phishing detectors, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds
  • Proactive security features, preventing many common security vulnerabilities even before they are discovered
  • Evolution 2.8.0, which brings new features such as vertical message panes

I was really surprised to hear that Firefox 2 made it into this release. We also can’t forget to mention Ubuntu’s counterparts: Kubuntu 6.10 (KDE), Edubuntu 6.10, and Xubuntu 6.10.

The free CD’s for Ubuntu 6.10 are not available so you would still have to get Ubuntu 6.06, unless you don’t mind spending about $4 and waiting two weeks. 🙂

Alright, on to bigger and better things…Ubuntu 7.04 here we come!

Download Firefox 2 – Just Released

This article was written on October 23, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox 2

Internet Explorer 7 was just released late last week and now Mozilla Firefox 2 is here! It was just placed in the releases folder on the FTP so it is time for you to come and get it!

Like always the downloader that I have put together below uses Mozilla’s load balancing so that one specific FTP server does not get all of the hits.

Firefox 2 is expected to be made officially available tomorrow according to Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler:

Lots of folks have been sending me emails asking if the Tuesday release reported at various places is accurate. Yes. Unless something unexpected happens, we’ll be shipping Firefox 2 on Tuesday.

From the looks of it everything has gone smoothly and it should be officially announced tomorrow…even though they typically announce it the same day that it hits the FTP. So don’t be surprised if some kind of announcement comes tonight around 5PM-7PM PDT.

When browsing through some of the links on the Firefox site I also noticed that they have started to update some of their screenshots with Firefox 2 builds. The one page that has definitely been refreshed is the Getting Started which couldn’t make it any more obvious. I can’t wait to see everything switch over and I wonder if there will be any kind of facelift to the site?

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview Now Available

This article was written on March 13, 2008 by CyberNet.

Stardock has started to deliver the DeskScapes 2.0 Preview yesterday to anyone that wants to give it a whirl. Previously DeskScapes was a way for Vista Ultimate users to extend the functionality of Dreamscene, but now it works on any version of Vista without needing Dreamscene. It’s a great way to have an animated desktop background on your Vista machine, oh, and did I say that it’s free?

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview is shipping with three different Dreams (that’s what the backgrounds are called) to test different aspects of the application. As we’ve shown you in video demonstrations there are a ton of amazing Dreams available to really make your desktop shine. The dynamic ones are especially nice, but you’ll have to fork out a few bucks to get some of my favorites.

Using the application is virtually dummy-proof. Once setup you can run DeskScapes, and you’ll see a window similar to this one:

stardock deskscapes

If you just want to checkout the Dreams that it comes with click the Choose an Animated Desktop to get started right away. Once you’ve tinkered with those I recommend going to WinCustomize and downloading some of the others that have been created. Almost all of the Dreams are free, and I’m sure you’ll have a good time trying them out.

DeskScapes 2.0 is expected to be released at the end of March with Object Desktop 2008.

Microsoft Releases Vista-Compatible Virtual Desktop Manager

This article was written on August 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

desktops.jpgWith Windows XP there were several PowerToys that added awesome features to the operating system, such as virtual desktops. Unfortunately with the release of Vista many of those free applications no longer worked, and users were left trying to find alternatives.

Sysinternals, who is part of Microsoft, took it upon themselves to develop a virtual desktop application that is compatible with Windows Vista. It’s not quite as fancy as the Vista Virtual Desktop application we reviewed last year, but the original Microsoft PowerToy wasn’t exactly busting at the seams with eye-popping features either.

At this point all you can do with the program is see a preview of up to four virtual desktops by clicking on the System Tray icon. You can also customize the keyboard shortcut used to switch between each desktop, but other than that there isn’t much else it’s capable of. The one feature I am really looking forward to is dragging and dropping windows from one desktop to another, but there’s no mention as to whether they intend to add something like that.

Judging by all of the hard work that Sysinternals has put into Process Explorer (review) this virtual desktop manager will probably get the attention it deserves.

New Poll And What Will Happen To µTorrent?

This article was written on December 17, 2006 by CyberNet.

uTorrent For around 2-weeks I have been watching the µTorrent forum because they were recently acquired by BitTorrent. I have been a uTorrent user for quite some time but news of the acquisition left me a little disappointed. I began wondering whether the two programs were going to stay independent of each other or if they would slowly start to merge the two applications together in hopes that people wouldn’t have a problem accepting it.

Reading through the posts in the forum makes me believe that µTorrent will be losing some faithful users because of the acquisition though. This conclusion is from posts like these:

Back to BitComet for me!

Time to switch back to BitComet. This sucks. 🙁

This could be bad.
If it does get bad, it’s back to “no decent Bittorrent client in existence” for me.

Sucks for all the people who were helping this community.  (webUI, forums, GUI themes, etc.)

One user even went on saying that there is a solution to the problem, and that is to disable the program from automatically updating which will keep µTorrent from getting a bloated update later on down the road. Other’s recommend that you should backup the program files for µTorrent and also the profile folder that is associated with it.

As for me I am just going to wait it out. I think BitTorrent would be stupid to step in and make µTorrent a bloated Torrent client because there are already plenty of those. The people who use it, such as myself, love it so much because it is really small and no installation is even needed to use it. As of right now I guess this is the only information that we have as far as what will happen:

Q: How will uTorrent’s technology be integrated with the current BitTorrent client?
A: Although uTorrent is lightweight, it is missing the patented innovations BitTorrent has made at the protocol level. It is also lacking an implementation for Mac and Linux. We will improve uTorrent in these arenas.

I just don’t like how it sounds when they say µTorrent is missing things that BitTorrent already takes advantage of. For me that is just a nice way of them saying they are going to make the application more bloated.

–The Poll–

So now I want to use this as a way to lead into our new poll. In the sidebar you’ll see 12 different BitTorrent clients that you can choose from. Pick the one that you use the most and over the next few days we’ll see which client tech enthusiasts think is the best!

MySQL … The $1 Billion Acquisition

This article was written on January 16, 2008 by CyberNet.

Heart MySQL Sun MySQL was acquired by Sun Microsystems today (also here and here) for a whopping $1 billion. I can’t say it was something I was expecting after MySQL has remained independent for over 10 years, but in the end I think it will be good for both the companies involved and the users.

The MySQL blog feels that users of the popular database software have little to worry about:

Given Sun’s proven track record as the largest contributor to Open Source, I think MySQL users have plenty of reason to feel happy about the acquisition. There are many companies that attempt to ride the wave of positive attention towards Open Source, but in my judgement, Sun gets it right.

The 350+ MySQL employees will be joining Sun’s 34,000+ employees, creating what I hope to be a remarkable team. The good news is that MySQL is currently available under the GPL license, which essentially means anyone can fork it off into their own product if they so desire. If Sun drops the ball it’s likely that someone else will pickup where the project left off.

Like most acquisitions we have to ride this one out to see if the end result is better or worse than what we would like. Sun is a good promoter of open source software though, and I would have to believe that they will not let us down.

Robots Invade Firefox 3… World Domination Next

This article was written on April 08, 2008 by CyberNet.

The robots have begun to invade the world, starting with Firefox 3! That’s right, the next-generation browser may not be what we were expecting all along. They are trying to pose as friendly inhabitants of the browser, but don’t get sucked into their evil spell. It’s too late for me, but save yourselves by switching to Internet Explorer!

Okay, maybe that’s a bit over-the-top, but the robots have definitely found a home in the latest Firefox 3 Beta 5. As James pointed out via a comment all you have to do is type about:robots into your address bar and press Enter. You should see this message:

Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!

Welcome Humans!

We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill!

  • Robots may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • Robots have seen things you people wouldn’t believe.
  • Robots are Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun To Be With.
  • Robots have shiny metal posteriors which should not be bitten.

And they have a plan.

Here’s a screenshot of the message you’re presented with.

firefox 3 about robots

You’ll notice that the title of the page is “Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!” What does it mean? It’s from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still released in 1951, where that particular message was meant to stop the robot Gort from destroying Earth [via Wikipedia].

What’s even better is that clicking the “Try Again” button will just replace it with another button that says “Please do not press this button again.” Naturally you’ll want to click it again, and then it will just disappear.

Note: This Easter Egg is only available in Firefox 3 Beta 5 and beyond.

CyberNotes: EverNote Stores Your Life in Notes

This article was written on May 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

EvernoteOur daily lives continue to become more and more overwhelmed with information. The problem that most of us face now is finding an efficient way to keep all of that information organized in a fashion that makes it easy to find what we’re looking for.

Evernote has got to be one of the best solutions for taking notes for just about everything imaginable. Whether it be creating to-do lists, shopping lists, or clipping stuff from the Web…Evernote does it all. Check out some of the amazing features that it includes, and it’s all free:

  • Note Formats: Create notes in multiple formats, including text, Web, email, handwriting, image clips and custom templates.
  • Multiple Categories: I’m not sure if categories is really the right name for these because they behave more like tags. Basically you can add as many categories to a note as you want.
  • Powerful SmartSearch: Multiple methods for finding notes: visually, by time, categories, automatic labeling and keywords, complete with matching note count.
  • Web & Email Clipper: Instantly add web pages and emails into EverNote from Internet Explorer, Outlook, Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird using an ‘Add to EverNote’ button along with context menus.
  • Drag & Drop files: Drag & drop or paste text with images from any applications into EverNote.
  • To Dos and Note Templates: Create and monitor To-Do lists, expenses, contacts and other common note templates. Here are some examples of the different templates (click to enlarge a screenshot):
Evernote To-Do List Evernote Expenses Evernote Contacts Evernote Shopping List
  • Embedded To?Dos: Click Ctrl-Shift-C or right-click and select “Insert To-Do checkbox” anywhere in your notes to place a checkbox at the cursor position in any note. This means the note will automatically appear in the To-Do category until all of the boxes are checked off.
  • Send notes via IM: Drag-and-drop your notes into Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, Skype and other IMs to instantly transfer interesting bits of info to your buddies.
  • Keep Your Sensitive Info Secure: Encrypt notes you want to keep private or protect from accidental changes or deletion. You can also password protect an entire EverNote database.
  • Backup: Automatic and manual backup are available via the Tools>Options>Backup tab.
  • Spellchecker
  • Note History: All changes to edited notes in “History Notes”.

One of the cool things with Evernote is that you never have to think twice about saving your notes because it is done automatically while you work.

The Web Clipper is a very integral part of Evernote for myself. In Firefox it just adds a small icon next to the address bar, and clicking on that button will automatically create a new note from any of the content highlighted on the page. This is a very quick process and doesn’t require any other interaction. Once the note is saved you’ll see a little popup in the corner of your screen that you can always click on to edit the newly created note:

Evernote

Evernote Universal ClipperThere is also an experimental feature that they currently have available called the Universal Clipper (pictured to the right). This is a separate download and once installed you will be able to quickly note just about anything by using double-clicking on the Universal Clipper icon in your System Tray. As seen in the screenshot, you can even specify an area on your screen to store in a note.

There is also an EverNote Plus version available for those who need synchronization capabilities or handwriting recognition features. I think most people will be content with the free version of Evernote since there is no time or note limitation, but Tablet PC users may find those more advanced features useful.

Fedora 9 Beta Brings More KDE & GNOME Goodness

This article was written on March 26, 2008 by CyberNet.

fedora kde 4

Fedora 9 is stepping forward with their first Beta, and it looks like it has quite a few quality enhancements that both GNOME and KDE users alike will appreciate. Being a KDE fan myself I’m extremely happy to see that the Fedora team has taken the time to integrate the new KDE 4.0 into the operating system. And it apparently works so well that they decided to make 4.0 the default for anyone using the KDE desktop. I could be wrong, but I believe Fedora is the first to make KDE 4.0 the default for that type of desktop.

There has been a lot of work going on that will make this an incredible release, and you’ll even see the improvements during the installation. Now you’ll be able to resize ext2, ext3, and NTFS partitions during the installation process making it easier to install Fedora on a drive that isn’t empty.

That’s not all you’ll find in Fedora 9 either. Here are some of the other features you’ll find in Fedora 9 Beta:

  • GNOME 2.22
    • Helpful world time clock
    • Better file system performance
    • Security improvements
    • Power management at the login screen
    • The ability to dynamically configure displays
    • Better Bluetooth integration
    • Improved podcast support
    • And many other enhancements
  • KDE 4.0.2, which includes a brand new desktop and panel with many new concepts:
    • Integrated desktop search
    • Brand new visual style called Oxygen
    • New multimedia API called Phonon
    • New hardware integration framework called Solid
  • Firefox 3 Beta 5
    • Native look and feel
    • Desktop integration
    • The new Places that replaces bookmarks
    • Reworked address bar
  • NetworkManager Improvements
    • Ad-hoc support, so that you can easily form a network with any near-by wireless devices
    • Support for mobile broadband cards (GSM/CDMA) through PPP
    • System-wide network configuration through NetworkManager with PolicyKit
  • Support for creating and installing to encrypted filesystems

My download of Fedora 9 Beta is still in the process of finishing, but for those of you who decide to give it a whirl post your thoughts in the comments below.
