FCC Fridays August 3, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and NEC rekindle love and LTE partnership, Samsung and Panasonic left in the rain

NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and NEC rekindle love and LTE partnership, Samsung and Panasonic left in the rain

The fractious on-again, off-again love affair between NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and NEC has taken another turn. After dissolving a partnership to build a common LTE platform that included Samsung and Panasonic, the trio have rekindled their love over a candlelit dinner. The gang are stumping up the cash to bankroll Access Network Technology, a venture to build, wait for it, LTE platforms for smartphones and tablets, with each party bringing its own R&D and IP knowhow to the table. There’s no word on how jilted lovers Samsung and Panasonic feel about the team-up, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t shed a private tear and think about the good old days.

Fujitsu, NEC and DoCoMo take on Qualcomm with new 3G/4G chip company

Some of the leading lights in Japanese mobile tech have joined forces to take on Qualcomm and TI in developing wirelessly-enabled smartphone and tablet chipsets. Fujitsu, NTT DoCoMo, NEC and Fujitsu Semiconductor have created Access Network Technology Limited, a new collaboration that will produce “industry-leading communications platform products” and reduce reliance on foreign-made wireless components.

The joint-venture will specialize in semiconductor products with integrated modem functions “for use in communications equipment” according to the quartet. That equipment is likely to primarily consist of phones and tablets, most likely targeting the Japanese home market initially, but could also expand to laptops from NEC and Fujitsu, as well as mesh-networking in the so-called “Internet of Things.”

All four have already collaborated in the past on development work, and the Access project basically makes that an official endeavor. Fujitsu will control the majority stake, holding 52.8-percent ownership, while Fujitsu Semiconductor will hold 9.5-percent. NEC will control 17.8-percent, and DoCoMo will get 19.9-percent. Initial capital is 100m yen ($1.3m) with a workforce of approximately 85.

Timescales for the first chips to emerge from Access Network Technology Ltd haven’t been revealed, though Fujitsu says the goal is 7-percent of global marketshare for smartphone chips by 2014. Currently Qualcomm dominates that landscape, but Access aims to push ahead in LTE and other next-gen connectivity standards – already advanced in consumer deployment in Japan – to give it an edge.

Fujitsu Stylistic M532 arrives at the FCC

The folks over at the FCC have a spanking new tablet to play around with, and it would be the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 in tow. Already appearing over at the FCC’s database, the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 is a 10.1-inch Android tablet that has all the relevant hardware specifications required for a Wi-Fi only tablet, supporting wireless a/b/g/n protocols, apart from Bluetooth connectivity, of course. It will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with no word that a Jelly Bean update is on its way, while sporting a rather massive 3,170mAh battery, which is an extremely generous cell size. I guess that there is a reason for such a large sized battery – this is because the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 comes with a Tegra 3 CPU underneath the hood. There is still no official word as to when the Fujitsu Stylistic M532 will arrive, if ever, in the US, so we do look forward to something official in due time.

Fujitsu Stylistic M532 Android tablet cozies up to the FCC

Half a year has gone by with nary a word nor sighting, but it looks like Fujitsu’s svelte Stylistic M532 tab is ready to break cover. Spotted in the FCC’s database, the 10.1-inch Android slate bears all the makings of a WiFi-only affair, as it lists support for a/b/g/n protocols, in addition to Bluetooth. From what we’ve gleaned in the separate filings, the ICS tablet should also come loaded up with a 3,170mAh battery — a generous cell size to complement its Tegra 3 CPU. Aside from this recent Commission appearance, no official announcement has been made to port this slim fella stateside. But where there’s an FCC doc, there’s usually a launch not far away. Check out the source below to sort through the usual RF tests or head to the company’s own site for more legit shots.

Fujitsu rolls out docomo NEXT series REGZA T-02D phone

Fujitsu has just announced a spanking new NEXT series of the REGZA T02D smartphone which will make its way to NTT DoCoMo of Japan. You can be sure that it will be a pretty tough job finding an imported unit here in the US for many reasons, but let us take a look at the kind of technology which this particular smartphone packs underneath the hood. For starters, the REGZA Phone T-02D is said to come with the Mobile REGZA Engine 6.0, which is the most recent version of Toshiba’s high-definition imaging technology, in addition to an OLED “New AMOLED Plus” display, hence making this on paper the best REGZA handset to date in terms of visual quality.

Other hardware specifications include a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 13.1-megapixel camera, REGZA Link Share that lets you hook up the device to a REGZA Blu-ray player so that you can enjoy recorded TV shows, and the most recent Human Centric Engine version. The 1,800mAh battery should provide adequate amounts of juice throughout the day, while you can even bring this with you during a slight drizzle thanks to it being water- (IPX5/8) and dust-resistant (IPX5). No idea on pricing, but expect the device to come in pink, black, and blue shades.

Toshiba REGZA T02D smartphone launches in Japan 'New AMOLED Plus' display, old resolution

Confusingly announced by Fujitsu, the Toshiba Regza T-02D will settle into a wall of similarly bright-colored, good-looking smartphones in NTT DoCoMo stores starting this week. The (Japan-only) phone’s 4.3-inch OLED screen holds onto a middling qHD resolution, but Fujitsu says its “new AMOLED Plus technology” will apparently render in higher clarity than any of its preceding smartphone displays — we’ll wait to see it in action before coming to any conclusions. There’s no word on who’s behind the dual-core 1.5GHz processor, but Xi connectivity (how Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo brands its LTE provision) makes a Qualcomm chipset likely. Fujitsu is also pushing the phone’s ‘human-centric’ Android skin, like what we saw on its own quad-core slab). This involves a collection of UI tweaks to the base Android 4.0 OS, including Intellicolor, where the phone will sense the color of ambient light and tweak the display accordingly. The phone’s 13.1-megapixel camera reaches an impressively high ISO level of 25600, running on Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, while Fujitsu’s also channeled the ghost of the original Motorola Atrix, resurrecting a fingerprint unlock sensor. Other features worth mentioning include high-definition NOTTV compatibility, plus certified water and dust resistance. As is expected from the world of Japanese smartphones, there’s a selection of colors too — the T-02D will be available in Pink, Black and Blue from launch. Japan residents wondering exactly which company made the phone can try to get their head around the full release below.

Fujitsu’s RakuRaku smartphone is catered towards the elderly

Let’s face it, not all our parents or grandparents or elderly relatives are as tech savvy as we’d like them to be. This usually results in them having to squint while peering at touchscreen phones and end up pressing wrong buttons simply because they’re not used to it. Well the good news is that Fujitsu has a phone in the works dubbed the RakuRaku smartphone that is aimed at elderly users. Unfortunately it appears to be only destined for the Japanese market and will be launching in August, but if you could find some way to import it, it might make a great gift for someone you know.

The phone itself runs on Android, which is a plus since it will have access to familiar apps and what not, and will sport a customized UI with large text and oversized virtual buttons. This will aid with easier reading and avoiding accidental presses since the screen is reportedly able to distinguish between an accidental touch and one done on purpose. It also sport large physical buttons which might be great for those whose fingers or hands might not be as agile as they were back in the day. You can check it out in the video above.
