Most of us loved to spend time on the swings when we were kids, whether on the playground or in the backyard. It was a little piece of magic in our lives as we could pretend to fly. People in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, have had the chance to return to those joyous moments with the 21 Swings project. These swings are actually giant instruments and we tiny humans are the means to create the music by returning to out childhoods.

One of inventor Steve Hoefer’s favorite creations is his knock-activated lock: a lock that only opens if you enter the correct knock sequence. Steve says he’s built the lock a dozen times. Instead of becoming increasingly complex, his latest build is actually easier to put together compared to its predecessors, thanks to a couple of Adafruit products.
This build uses Adafruit’s piezoelectric sensor, solenoid lock and mini microcontroller. You can install the lock on any wooden drawer or door that’s at least 2 1/4″ deep. Once installed, you simply record your secret knock, and the device now knows to only unlock if the same knock is repeated.

Winter is no fun, especially when it comes too soon or overstays its welcome. How can you make it more enjoyable? By being awesome like Chris Marchand who decided to turn snow into snowlemonade (snowade? water?) by making a beautiful and colorful ice wall fortress in his yard. Look at it. It glows.

Until recently I went camping several times per year. And believe it or not, it gets damned cold in Florida during certain months. So, when nature calls and you’ve gotta crawl out of that tent at 3 A,M… well, this is close to an answer to staying warm.
Imagine yourself stuck in traffic. Imagine listening to some Top 40 radio station playing the same 4 songs over and over and wondering about the things you would do if you didn’t have to commute. Imagine your brain numb. And then imagine seeing some psycho bike rider pull off some bike tricks off of a half-pipe on top of a moving truck. In the middle of traffic. That would be fun for everyone.

Here’s a trick you can do for your next house party: fill the pool with non-Newtonian fluid and have people run across it, dance all over it, ride their bikes over it and so forth. Like, come on dude, you’re walking on water, how can you not have fun?
