Make Way For Velopresso, the Coffee Shop on Wheels

Coffee shops make it easier to grab some of your favorite brew on the go by setting up drive-thru windows. But why should you go there to get your coffee, when you can make the coffee (sort of) come to you ? The answer is, you shouldn’t.

velopresso 1Velopresso is a mobile coffee-making machine that’s driven by pedal power. I think you can say that it is basically a coffee shop on wheels. Think of them as baristas on bikes – or more accurately, baristas on trikes. Velopresso won’t be able to serve you any waffles or sandwiches at this point, but it’s all geared up to serve you a hot cup of latte, espresso, or cappuccino, thanks to its gas-powered espresso machine and pedal-driven burr grinder.

It was designed by Royal College of Art graduates Amos Field Reid and Lasse Oiva, and has been honored with a design award from the Deutsche Bank and has placed second in a competition hosted by prestigious Italian design house Pininfarina.

Since Velopresso is still on its prototype stages, you might have to wait a while for your cup of Joe. Its makers expect to start taking pre-orders for the production version in early Summer 2013.

Billboard Blinds: Adblock Plus, IRL

In a world where ads are constantly being shoved into everyone’s face at any given moment, these Billboard Blinds are a welcome change. It’s a concept for an urban intervention that gives people like you and me a choice on whether or not we want to view ads while waiting for the bus or train or while flagging down a taxi.

Billboard BlindsIf you’re not in the mood to know about the latest show that’s hitting on network TV soon or about newest teeth whitening products in the market, then simply reach out and pull the blinds, and go on your merry way. (Or rather, continue waiting your merry way. You get the picture.) This idea might even make ads more effective for those who are interested in them, thanks to the interaction required to open them and view the ad underneath. That’s got to make the ad a bit more memorable, right?

Billboard Blinds1

The cool thing is you don’t need to install any fancy gizmos or gadgets to achieve this end. Regular window blinds will do. Who knew something so simple could make a world of difference?

Billboard Blinds were conceptualized by George Zisiadis.

Smells…Not So Delicious

Stilton perfumeWho doesn’t want to smell like they’re in the middle of cooking dinner at any time? These food-scented perfumes and colognes are seriously weird and a bit disgusting.

Battery.Family: Batteryoshka

It’s a hassle having to look through various drawers to find a battery that’s in the size you need. It’s even a larger hassle if you have a bunch of batteries but can’t find one in the size you need. Panasonic’s emergency flashlight took that into consideration by allowing people to use it with batteries in various sizes.

For everything else, there’s the Battery.Family.

battery family 1

It’s basically four 1.5-volt batteries housed in one huge size D battery. With each ‘family’, you get a size C, size AA, and size AAA battery aside from the D-sized one. The AAA actually contains the power source, while each of the larger casings just contain the contacts to fit the appropriately-sized battery. It’s like those Russian Matryoshka stacking dolls, but in battery form.

Battery.Family was designed by Soohwan Kim, Junho Yoon, Dohoon Lee and Hyojin Park and it is, unfortunately, just a concept design for now. But here’s to hoping.

HabitRPG Helps You Level up IRL

Can’t kick a habit (or form a new one) to save your life? Then maybe you’ll be able to do better if you take a different approach.

You know how pre-school teachers and parents always use games to teach toddlers the alphabet and how to count and all that? Well, Tyler Renelle decided to use that premise to help people who have habit-forming or habit-kicking issues by creating a habit tracking app that doubles as an RPG game called HabitRPG.

HabitRPGHabitRPG is meant to be used with time-tracking and lifestyle tools like RescueTime, Fitbit, Wunderlist, MyFitnessPal, and GCal. Your character will be able to level-up in the game with every achievement you make, while it will lose HP if you fail at a goal or break a habit you’re supposed to form. These incentives and disincentives are designed to help keep you motivated and on track.

HabitRPG is raising funds on Kickstarter through February 19, 2013 to fix bugs on their website, and to develop iOS and Android apps. A minimum pledge of $5(USD) will get you 20 tokens to be used in the game. This currency is used when you first start a game, or if you don’t meet your goals.

Displair Cloud Vapor Display Lets You Play Fruit Ninja (Minus the Actual Fruits) In Real Life

Fruit Ninja is a fun game to play to de-stress or to just while the time away. There’s just something about slashing pears and slicing oranges endlessly…

Many people have attempted to play real-life Fruit Ninja using real fruits and actual swords. But thanks to Displair, you can now play sort-of real-life Fruit Ninja by slashing the bevy of fruits…with your finger.

Fruit NinjaDisplair is a display that projects images on a cloud of water vapor. It’s like a television with a transparent touchscreen, and it’s one of the awesomest bits of tech that we’ve seen in a long time.

The Displair was showcased at CES 2013 last week, where some people got to play the fruit-slashing game on the impressive display.

Pretty awesome, huh?

Disney Promote Wreck-It Ralph in London with 8-bit Lane

Wreck-It Ralph has been released in a lot of places worldwide, my country of residence included, and I really found it entertaining and enjoyable. If you like video games at the very least and played a couple of games when they were still all pixelly and in 8-bit form, then chances are you’ll like the movie, too.

The film doesn’t come out in the UK until February 8, 2013, so Disney is going the extra mile – or is it the extra lane? – to promote the movie by setting up 8-bit Lane in London.

8Bit LondonIt’s basically a street art exhibit where, if you look closely, you’ll spot a few things that aren’t as they should be. For example, water flowing out of a pipe looks suspiciously pixelated. Two pigeons on a pipe also get treated to some 8-bit action.

All of the sculptures on 8-bit Lane were created by Aden Hynes, who is Disney’s film production sculptor. Check out more of the exhibit in the gallery below.

Amazing BMO Adventure Time Birthday Cake Has a Colorful Surprise on the Inside

The multifunctional BMO crosses over with Nyan Cat in this spectacular birthday cake that was baked for somebody named Pen. I’m sure those who were were in attendance at Pen’s birthday party had an awesome time that was made even more awesome, thanks to the mere presence of this fantabulous, multi-layered and multi-colored cake.

Adventure Time CakeThe image was posted on Reddit, where users were quick to analyze how the BMO cake was made.

In case you were wondering yourself, here’s how, according to user static80085:

  1. Separate the batters out and individually dye them with food colouring like so.
  2. Prepare 6 shallow, square cake pans (size is dependent on your cake size).
  3. For each cake pan, pour all of the colors in the color scheme you’d like at the middle of the cake pan (e.g. pour the red in first, then the yellow, then the green, etc.). Example would be here.
  4. Bake and assemble!

This cake is just pure win.

The Baby Mop Lets Your Baby Do The Mopping

Baby MopIs your baby getting lazy – just lying around eating and sleeping all day? Sure, he’s only a few months old, but the constant freeloading can get on your nerves after a while. The baby mop transforms your adorable (but rather inefficient) little bundle into a valuable cleaning tool.

I Wish This TARDIS Jewelry Box Could Hold Infinite Treasures

Store your jewelry and other treasures in the geekiest way possible: in this TARDIS jewelry box. While its space is virtually infinite in Doctor Who’s realm, that doesn’t apply to the TARDIS recreations on Earth. But even though we all have to deal with finite space and compartments, I’m sure this will be more than enough for whatever you want to store inside it.

TARDIS Jewelry BoxIt might look like a huge drawer in the pictures, but it only measures about 7 1/2 inches tall, while it’s 5 inches wide, and 2 3/4 inches deep.

Some people prefer jewelry boxes that only have one major compartment, but I like the fact that this one has six. This way, I can segregate my jewelry and accessories by category into the different drawers.

This particular TARDIS jewelry box is already, unfortunately, all sold out, but you can contact Destry over at pzcreations22 on Etsy to see if she can make another one for you.
