Bubble Wrap Bike: Ride the Stress Away

Popping bubble wrap is pretty calming. It’s an unconventional means to deal with anger or frustration, but hey, it works and it’s way cheaper than a session with a therapist.

Taking bubble wrap to the next level is LA-based comedy “imaginator” Eric Buss, who came up with the fascinating contraption that’s aptly called the Bubble Wrap Bike.

bubble wrap bike

The bicycle isn’t made of bubble wrap, although bubble wrap is a huge component of it. The front of the bike is outfitted to hold and dispense a sheet of bubble wrap as the rider goes along. The bike’s wheels run over the bubble wrap with each push to the pedal, popping it along the way.

It’s weird, it’s strange, it’s all about bubble wrap and I think it’s amazing in a cool-but-I’d-never-ride-this-myself sort of way.

On a side note, what a waste of good bubble wrap!

This Week's Top Comedy Video: Daria Movie Trailer

I’m probably not as big a fan as some of you guys when it comes to Daria and/or Aubrey Plaza but even I have to admit Aubrey Plaza as Daria in a real life movie of Daria is all kinds of awesome. I’d actually like it if more movies and TV shows flip flopped into different style: Game of Thrones as an animated movie Pixar-style, Wall-E as a premium cable TV show and so on.

Sweat Machine Turns Sweat Into Water You Can Drink

Would you drink your sweat? Obviously, we’d all choose to drink water if we had a choice. But if there’s no clean water, would you drink sweat instead?

The Sweat Machine was created by engineer Andreas Hammar upon the request of Unicef.

Sweat Machine

It essentially purifies human sweat to turn it into drinking water. It’s not being used as a tool to tackle water shortages, but as a means to raise awareness on the issue.

Unicef recently brought out the machine to offer a glass of fresh sweat to visitors and footballers at last week’s Gothia Cup soccer tournament.

Sweat Machine1

The Sweat Machine uses water filtration technology called Membrane Distillation that was developed by HVR and The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. It uses a plastic cassette where the sweat to be filtered is heated into vapor and made to circulate between two membranes. This separates non-volatile substances effectively.

Hammar explained that a sweaty t-shirt can provide about 10ml of water, or just about a mouthful. Just think of how many sweaty shirts you’d need for a full glass of water.

Tricking the Eye: Phenomenal 3D Art

The art world is full of surprising and unexpected styles, but there have always been some clear separations. Paintings, drawing, and photographs stay on the two-dimensional canvas, while sculptures exist in 3-D. Those boundaries are difficult to cross, unless you are Ramon Bruin, a Dutch artist who excels at blurring the lines between reality, art, and the physical boundaries of a 2-D world.

Grumpy Cat Postage Stamps: MemeMailing

Grumpy Cat has been entertaining men and women, young and old, with his stone-faced expression ever since he hit the web. You’ve seen his memes and parody videos. You’ve seen the busts and sculptures that he’s inspired artists to create. You’ve probably already seen the Grumpy Cat-themed nail art and shirts all over the web.

And now you’re going to be seeing him on your mail pretty soon, too!

The postage stamp is available in three sizes and was created at  Zazzle. It’s available in a bunch of denominations, and you can choose the stamp value you want from a drop-down menu. Values start at $0.33 for mailing postcards, with the highest value at $5.60 for priority mail.

Now your mail can look just as grumpy as the postal workers delivering it.

A Few Crazy Food Concepts From Japan

Among their many contributions to the world, the Japanese are famed for their ingenuity and ability to create concepts which many of us would never have dreamed of, let alone contemplated one day buying. Whilst many of these may not be found on the shelves at your local store, let’s face it, what’s more fun than having a look at some truly crazy food inventions?

Plants vs. Zombies Ported to Sega Genesis: Altered Plant

PopCap’s tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies is available on pretty much every modern gaming device, from PCs to smartphones. And it’s also on at least one classic console: the Sega Genesis aka the Mega Drive. The Penny-Arcade Report’s Ben Kuchera stumbled upon this 16-bit curio at PAX Australia.

Unsurprisingly, the port is an unofficial and illegal game. Dave Cudrev of Retrospekt bought a copy of the game on eBay for around $30 (USD) from a Russian coder. YouTuber Stepan V, whose video of the game appears below, was also able to snag one from an “underground retro video game market” in Russia. The game’s graphics have taken a considerable hit, plus it’s in Russian, but otherwise it seems to be the same as the original game.

It would be hilarious if it got DLC via the Mega-CD.

Nubrella Wearable Umbrella Keeps the Rain out (and Doesn’t Look Silly at All)

Whenever I go take the dog for a walk on a rainy or snowy day, it’s challenging to carry around an umbrella to keep from getting wet, so I usually just end up soaked by the time I’m done. But if I had a Nubrella, all of my problems would be solved.

Current Nubrella Design

Though I’d create a new issue for myself – embarrassment. I’m just not sure I’d be able to walk down the street wearing one of these silly looking things, even though I like the concept of a truly hands-free umbrella. The Nubrella was originally launched back in 2009, but the original design was too constraining, and bubble like, which made it uncomfortable to wear and use. Its designers are now readying a new version which solves many of the problems of the original.

Improved 2013 Nubrella Design

The new Nubrella (say that 10 times fast) is worn like a backpack, but when it’s wet outside, it can be opened up to cover your head and upper body – like a giant hood. It’s got a see-through front and top, which provides greater visibility than with umbrellas too. The updated design also allows for an open front which improves the ability to communicate and see while wearing it.

It’s really a pretty ingenious design, but I still don’t think I can get past the way it looks. Am I just too vain? If you’re not self-conscious, you can get on the list to own a new backpack-style Nubrella over on Kickstarter with prices starting around $50(USD) – about half of the planned retail price.

The Incredible Bone Flowers of Hideki Tokushige

We think of flowers as some of the most delicate creations in nature. We think of bone as hard and durable. Japanese artist Hideki Tokushige disagrees with that traditional separation, and in his spellbinding Bone Flowers (Honebana), he shows that artistic brilliance can turn flowers into stone and bone into silk.
