Ooh Monday, why you gotta be such a drain? Everything just seems more difficult at the start of the week. Somehow, designer Hui Chun Chen’s Constructing Memory collection manages to embody that feeling in furniture that takes extra effort to put—and keep—together.
Welcome to the end of another year, people! We made it, and not without a ton of brand new stuff to carry us into 2014 and beyond. We saw lots of beautiful, interesting, and just plain weird things, but here we’ve rounded up the items that stuck with us; not just because of what they are, but also because of how they were made, or the interaction they required, or—yes—the way they made us feel.
You can forget about allen wrenches and magnets
Do you hear that? In the distance? That’s the sound of thousands of college students shouting with joy. Because designer Benjamin Vermeulen has created a line of easy to assemble flat-pack furniture that doesn’t require screws, nuts, bolts, or those dreaded allen wrenches. Just the magic of magnets.
Hungry? Sorry, you’re outta look. While this box might look like it’s stuffed full of cookies, you’re actually looking at a cool new set of wall hangers.
For better or for worse, most of us have phased out meals at the dinner table in favor of dining in front of the TV. But on those rare occasions when guests visit and you don’t want them thinking you’re a slob, this lovely wooden coffee table from Duffy London quickly transforms into a small table where four can dine and focus on conversation, not the PVR.
You’re sitting in a coffee shop sketching the layout of your new apartment for your friend. Okay, here’s the living room. Couch and coffee table are here. Chair here. I want to put a smaller chair over here. And then your almost incomprehensible chicken scratch turns into life-sized furniture before your eyes.
This skull armchair is the perfect throne. Especially if you like to cosplay as Skeletor and lounge around acting all evil. It’s best to face away from any captives that are going to be entering the room. You want them to see the skull face first and be thoroughly frightened before they see you. Though it needs to be placed on a rotating turntable for full effect.
This Skull Armchair was designed by French artist Harold Sangouard who probably sits in it and laughs maniacally all day. The face is very angular and pretty darn creepy. You should be petting a cat while sitting there too for dramatic effect.
How much is it? Too much, that’s how much. “Price available upon request.” In other words, you and I can’t afford it. Only evil geniuses should inquire. Wait, do evil geniuses buy things, or do they steal them all?

Now that film is almost obsolete, you’re probably wondering what to do with that beautiful old Minolta taking up precious space in your desk drawer. Well, have you ever considered building furniture out of it? This crew of crafty Chinese designers has.
Any cat owner knows just how much cats love human laps. Now you can switch things up and sit on their lap for a change with this massive cat couch. This huge feline comes from Unfold, a design studio in Antwerp, Belgium and it is a cat lovers dream come true.
I call it a couch, but Unfold thinks of it as more of a sculpture. It is appropriately called Felix Domesticus. This is just one of five cat-themed elements of an art installation that the studio assembled in 2010. The 3.5-meter long cat takes up residence in an apartment’s master bedroom, while visitors to the exhibit can sit on it. I wonder what a small house cat would think about this?
Now if they only sold these things, we could all sit and lay on a giant cat, without getting fur all over our clothes.
