AT&T’s LG G Flex Tipped For Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update Tomorrow

AT&T’s LG G Flex Tipped For Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update TomorrowAT&T’s support website did mention in passing that the mobile carrier will be rolling out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the LG G Flex from this coming Thursday onward – which is tomorrow, by the way. We have caught hold of the LG G Flex before at the end of last year, before getting a unit ourselves for a prim and proper review. The LG G Flex is different from other smartphones as it comes with a curved display and a self-healing back, allowing it to “endure” minor nicks that would “heal”, without leaving a scar on lesser handsets. It seems that the upcoming update will be done Over The AIR (OTA), where it weighs a rather massive 686MB – so getting it hooked to a Wi-Fi network might be a good idea.

With this OTA update, expect your LG G Flex to be able to experience a new full-screen “immersive” mode, better navigation and status bars, enhanced processing speed, and improved battery life that ought to bring a smile to the face of any LG G Flex owner.

Of course, AT&T prefers to tread on the side of caution, suggesting that you make a back up of your data before you actually download and apply the update, never mind that theoretically speaking, it ought not to have any effect on your personal content. AT&T also did mention that it would be wise to remain connected to a Wi-Fi network when performing the update of your LG G Flex, while making sure the handset has at least half its battery level left. It will be released in waves, so fret not if your LG G Flex shows no signs of Android 4.4.2 KitKat goodness tomorrow.

LG G Flex Android 4.4 Update Released

LG G Flex Android 4.4 Update Released

LG’s “self-healing” flexible smartphone, the G Flex, came with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean pre-installed. Its been quite a long wait for owners of this smartphone, given that late last year Google released Android 4.4 KitKat and its taken a lot of time for the update to reach the G Flex. Today, finally, the LG G Flex Android 4.4 update has been released. While it doesn’t bring all of the features it was rumored to, it will definitely breathe a new life into the smartphone.

LG G Flex Could Get 4K Video Post Android 4.4 KitKat Update

LG G Flex Could Get 4K Video Post Android 4.4 KitKat UpdateWhat do you think of the LG G Flex smartphone? We have already reviewed it and have come away pretty impressed, but this curvy device might have more than meets the eye, too. Apparently, word has leaked out that this particular smartphone will soon come with 4K video support after one installs the upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat update. This particular rumor does have some pretty solid backing, too, thanks to the existence of a User Agent profile that points in the direction of the 6” smartphone featuring 2160p video capability. Apart from that, the anonymous source of PhoneArena also did mention that the curvy LG G Flex will no longer offer 120fps slow motion video after this particular update is applied.

LG Ramping Up Flexible Display Production

LG Ramping Up Flexible Display Production

In terms of smartphones with flexible displays, Samsung and LG are both competing against one another. Both companies have released phones with curved displays in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex and if the rumors are anything to go by, LG could also be the company responsible of providing curved displays to Apple for use in the Cupertino’s rumored iWatch device (along with battery technology too, apparently). That being said, whatever LG has planned, it seems that the South Korean tech company will be ramping up production of flexible displays in anticipation of the smartwatch market.

This is according to Han Sang Beom, CEO of LG Group’s display making arm, who told the Korean media that the company will be increasing investments on small-sized panels to increase production capacity. According to Han, “There are many requests for plastic OLED from our smartphone (making) clients and the interest in wearable devices are pretty high.” He also states, “We will finalize our plan within the first half after observing the market situation (to decide on) substrate size and total production capacity.” We’re not sure if LG’s plans to ramp up production have anything to do with Apple’s iWatch or their own products, but either way it looks like the company is anticipating that flexible displays will be in demand for 2014.

LG G Flex Available On AT&T And T-Mobile

LG G Flex Available On AT&T And T MobileSomehow, being straight and boxy does not seem to be the “in” thing when it comes to product design most of the time these days, and throwing in some curves would definitely go some way in making the device more appealing to the masses. We are pleased to report that the LG G Flex is finally available to pick up from AT&T as well as T-Mobile. If you happen to be a subscriber with AT&T, you will be able to pick one up for $299.99 as it will come with a new two-year contract, or should you choose not to pick it up on contract, then you can always fork out $694.99 right from the get go.

Fly Or Die: LG G Flex

    Screenshot 2014-02-02 18.47.50

The LG G Flex is one of the most hyped phones of the year.

Granted, it’s only January and granted, LG isn’t the most exciting Android manufacturer around, but it has a curved display! Curved, I say! And LG even says it can heal itself if you scratch it.

For these reasons, we couldn’t resist getting this thing into the studio for a Fly Or Die, and we walked away generally impressed.

The G Flex, a true phablet, sports a 6-inch POLED 720p curved display — and it’s beautiful. It’s also got 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard memory, a 3500mAh battery and a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor under the hood. As phones go, it’s a pretty damn powerful one.

On the other hand, the curve of the display is no more than a gimmick. Though it’s said to meet the contours of your face for a more comfortable experience, it’s really just something you can point to when you’re trying to be cooler than your friends. And as far as self-healing goes, neither John nor I were convinced.

The scratches we made were slightly minimized, but definitely still showed up.

All that said, the G Flex is still one of LG’s most impressive handsets. If you’re on the market for a powerful, beautiful Android device, this may very well be the one for you.

    Two flies.

AT&T LG G Flex Has Arrived

lg-g-flex_06If you have been on the lookout for the LG G Flex, then you would be pleased to take note that the smartphone is already available via AT&T, not too soon after its pre-orders went live last week. Of course, as for our friends who happen to live across the pond, you need not fret, since the LG G Flex is tipped to arrive at over 20 different countries in Europe. T-Mobile users will have to be a little bit more patient though since their LG G Flex will only arrive next month, clearly giving AT&T a head start among the rest of the major mobile carriers in the market.

LG G Flex to arrive in Europe soon

lg-g-flex-worldwideFor those living in South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore, you would most probably have seen people carry the LG G Flex around already, which so happens to be the first smartphone in the world that was specially designed for it to follow the curve of the human face. Hmmm, this certainly brings back memories of the Nokia handset that Neo used in the Matrix, where it had a curved bottom, no? The Banana Phone, if I am not mistaken. Well, this just goes to prove how fashion recycles trends from before, although the LG G Flex is light years ahead of Nokia’s archaic device in terms of hardware technology. We now have word that LG is preparing to roll out the LG G Flex to over 20 countries in Europe soon.

Among the major European markets where you will find the LG G Flex, they would include the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and Austria, among others. This is a surefire way of attracting attention, as the LG G Flex sports a 6” display that relies on Plastic OLED (P-OLED) technology, and it will also make use of the world’s first curved battery. Apart from that, there is another feather in its distinguished crown, that is, this is the first handset that boasts of a self-healing coating on the back cover. This means you need not worry yourself sick too much about minor scratches and nicks happening, as just like Wolverine’s body, it ought to shrug off such scratches without batting an eyelid.

Other hardware specifications of the LG G Flex include a quad-core 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) processor with an Adreno 330 450MHz GPU, a 1280 x 720 resolution 6” curved P-OLED (Real RGB) display, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, a 13MP shooter at the back with a front-facing 2.1MP camera, a 3,500mAh battery, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean as the mobile operating system of choice. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) alongside NFC support.
