LG G2 breaks cover in leaked press photo ahead of official reveal

Sure, LG’s set to unveil the G2 tomorrow, but the firm’s handset has made a surprise appearance on the eve of its official coming out party. @evleaks has snagged a press shot of a device that matches the reported G2 we’ve seen in covert photos and video, a leaked manual and promotional shots. The image doesn’t bring any revelations, but it does give us an even clearer view of the hardware we’ll see in just a few hours. Soon enough, we’ll get to know the smartphone better than its case.

Update: @evleaks has dished out another picture of the phone, giving us an unobstructed view of its face. Head past the break for the photo.

We’ll be liveblogging LG’s G2 event tomorrow, join us at 11AM ET!

Speculation is overrated — or at least LG seems to think so. The Korean phone-maker has already announced that the Optimus G will be succeeded by a handset dubbed the G2, and it’s pretty clear that tomorrow’s event will be a launch for that very device. There’s still plenty we don’t know about this upcoming handset, though, so you’ll want to point your browser right here as we bring you the latest news live from the NYC event.

LG Is Looking To Buy Some Coverage For Its New Phone

lucky_goldstar_c_60

As the trend towards the convergence of journalism and marketing marches ever onward today we celebrate LG’s efforts to buy press for their new phone, the LG G2. We received this email this morning from a member of the Burson Marsteller team in Korea. I’ve left out her name because clearly she’s new over there. It proposes that, in exchange for an unspecified amount of money, we do either an in-depth review of a specific feature of the phone (battery or the display, naturally), or a wild and crazy 1:1 comparison against many devices, including a “torching test.” They’ll even pay for multiple reviews of the phone!

This email is, to be clear, the exception rather than the rule. I’ve never seen such an egregious offering of payola in all the years I’ve been writing for tech sites and this shouldn’t suggest that all phone reviews are tainted – although, to be fair, this doesn’t look very good for folks who may be writing about the G2 in general.

In the early, heady days of blogging company-sponsored junkets and pay for play tactics were often the norm. They were ways for small sites to gain access to the wider world of technology and allowed us (and I’m as guilty as the next blogger) to cover things we wouldn’t normally cover. Those days are no more, however, and the vast majority of writers I talk to now refuse to accept the largesse of well-heeled clients. We’ll run banner ads all day long – that’s none of my concern – we just won’t let ad dollars control our coverage.

So enjoy this, LG. The G2 is now tainted and will probably sink. I’m no crusader nor am I innocent of past crimes but this is terrible form.

Hi TechCrunch team,

This is REDACTED from Burson Marsteller Korea and we currently represent LG Mobile as its PR agency, handling the global PR for LG Mobile.

I’d like to inquire possible options on media tie-up opportunities with TechCrunch as LG is launching its new smartphone, the LG G2 in August.

To briefly explain, what kind of topics we are looking to put out:

1. Overall product review on the LG G2 (Display, Design, UX, etc): This can be a series of feature articles

2. In-depth review on a specific feature of the phone (For example – Battery or Display)

3. Product review of the LG G2 in comparison with competitor’s products: 1:1 comparison or 1 against many, including a torching test

It would be great if you can propose the types of sponsored packages as well as a rough pricing information on them.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks,

Leaked manual for LG G2 confirms nano-SIM slot, no fingerprint reader

Leaked manual for LG G2 reveals rear controls and general specs, no fingerprint reader

The LG G2. We already know plenty about its rear-mounted volume controls, funny cases and passion for classical music. We’ve even seen a video of the 5.2-inch 1080p handset in the flesh. But a question mark has remained over a couple of basic specs until today, when pages from a supposedly leaked manual appeared at reputed surprise-spoiler Nowhereelse.fr. Assuming the info is legit, which it seems to be, we can say that the thing between the volume buttons on the back of the phone is not a fingerprint reader, as some had hoped — it’s just a power/lock button. Also, the phone will follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 5 and Moto X by housing a nano-SIM slot. But unlike those two handsets, the G2 will offer microSD storage expansion, not to mention a removable 2,610mAh battery. At this point, there’s really nothing left to discover except some availability info — oh no, wait, we have some of that too.

Pantech Vega LTE-A Is An Upcoming Flagship

Pantech Vega LTE A Is An Upcoming FlagshipI have always maintained the fact that each smartphone manufacturer would do well to roll out a flagship model in order to maintain one’s pride in the industry. After all, they do it with cars and other kinds of purchases, so why not do the same with smartphones? Smartphones are something that we carry with us wherever we go, so if you have something that is of the high end side of things, then it would definitely be worth taking out from your pocket to make full use of it. LG has their LG G2, and Pantech, one of LG’s domestic rivals in South Korea, too wants to release a flagship device that they call the Pantech Vega LTE-A – where it will sport a power button and touchpad on the back, taking a different design cues from its contemporaries.

The Pantech Vega LTE-A is also known as the model number IM-A880S, where it is tipped to be announced later this coming August 6th – and industry watchers might read into this as a potential pre-emptive strike on Pantech’s part of sorts, since that is a day before LG officially reveals the LG G2. The Pantech Vega LTE-A will be powered by Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, accompanied by 2GB RAM, a 5.7” Full HD display, LTE-Advanced connectivity, and a quad-core Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz processor.

LG G2 to include ringtones from the Vienna Boys’ Choir… yes, really

LG G2 to include music from the Vienna Boys' Choir say what

LG isn’t shy about its love of classical music, having once struck a deal with Ennio Morricone to put his tunes on the company’s phones. However, we’ll still admit to being caught off-guard by its next collaboration: when the G2 is officially revealed on August 7th, it will include the dulcet sounds of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. The Android flagship will ship with nine ringtones and five alerts sung by the youth group, along with four musical chimes. Beautiful devices need beautiful music, LG argues. Whether or not that’s really true, you won’t have to wait long to hear the end result. LG will post free music on the G2’s teaser site on August 1st, including a choral version of its standard ringtone.

LG G2 Will Reportedly Be Launched On 100 Carriers Around The Globe

There haven’t been many LG smartphones that have made people grip the edge of their seats, save for the Nexus 4 developed in conjunction with Google. However, the South Korean company’s new flagship does have a lot of people anxiously awaiting its release. Called the G2, LG is to formally unveil this device at an event scheduled on August 7th. A latest report from MK News, a South Korean publication, claims that the new smartphone will be launched on as many as 100 carriers around the world.

For the G2, LG has already set an sales goal of 10 millions units. Distributions partnerships are already in place, what’s left now is consumer interest. The G2 will initially be released in South Korean, it is expected to make its way to the U.S. and Europe in September. Global release is said to complete in October, at which point over 100 carriers around the globe might be carrying the device. Such a large scale launch will help LG cement its position in the global smartphone market, and distinguish itself from other players how are currently struggling in the low to mid-range markets.
