You may have heard that the humble computer mouse is an endangered species, threatened by the rise of modern touch gestures. This may be true, but gesture based-computing isn’t a zero-sum game. Millions of people still use a mouse every day, and some of those mice have slick gesture capabilities. More »
While headphones can effectively block out sound – especially if you’re pumping some loud music through them – sometimes you don’t want loud music in your ears. You want silence, or, at the very least, reduced cacophony. That’s why you need a nice pair of earplugs, instead of those disposable yellow sponges that never quite fit right. Bossman Joe Brown agrees—he wouldn’t have survived running the Gizmodo ship at CES without a nice pair of V-Moda Fader earplugs. Usually these V-Modas are $20, but Amazon just dropped the price to $15. A pittance for a little bit of peace and quiet. [Amazon] More »
One of the most frugal ways to watch TV is to simply pluck public channels from over-the-air broadcasts. Public channels include the majors — NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC — plus other great free programming, like shows on PBS, often broadcasting with better image quality than cable. That means you don’t miss many major events. Last night’s State of the Union, the Olympics, and NFL football all have a home on public stations. All you need is a TV with a digital tuner (so, basically any flat screen from the past ten years) and an antenna and you’re in. But which antenna? There’s no best antenna — hell, there’s no such thing as an HD antenna — but the Mohu Leaf is a good choice, especially if you’re in the city or suburbs. Lifehacker’s Alan Henry reviewed the Leaf and had nice things to say: More »
These Sennheisers are not fashion headphones. They don’t have a multi-million dollar marketing campaign behind them. They don’t have legions of rapper endorsements. What they are is well-designed, comfortable, and beautiful-sounding headphones that are currently at Amazon’s lowest historical price. Mario Aguilar reviewed them back in May and loved them: More »
If sitting is the new smoking — that is, it makes you look cool and significantly shortens your life expectancy — then we, as sitting addicts, should choose our brand. People even moderately acquainted with high-end office chairs know about the Herman Miller Aeron, but Steelcase also makes a few premium thrones. In particular, the Steelcase Leap is a widely acclaimed chair. It’s a Wirecutter favorite; here’s Kyle VanHemert’s take: More »
A few weeks ago we got a tip: check Amazon Warehouse after the Super Bowl. The logic goes that lots of folks buy more TV than they can afford to impress their friends, then they take advantage of Amazon’s rather generous return policy. Amazon can’t sell the now-“used” TVs at full price, so they lop 20%-30% off, and sell it on their Amazon Warehouse site. Lo and behold, five business days after the Super Bowl, there are some stellar used HDTV deals. More »
Dropbox gives you 2GB of storage when you sign up. iCloud offers 5GB. While there are plenty of reasons to prefer those services, the storage space they offer is way less than what you can get with Box today. Usually Box only gives you 5GB of storage for free, but if you sign up with a new email address, Box will give you 25GB of cloud storage for life (or until the end of the Box enterprise.) More »
My iPhone recently turned one and a half, and let me tell you, the battery isn’t what it used to be. The battery life isn’t terrible, but it’s certainly flagging. For folks with old smartphones, you know the feeling: you want a safety blanket so you’re not left without your communications hub at the worst time. This tiny Mophie Juice Pack seems like it would fit the bill: it’s a portable 2000mAh battery so you can give your gadgets a little boost. Mophie makes good products — Mario Aguilar relied on a (larger) Mophie juice pack to get through CES. Plus, with this model, the actual battery is tiny, and today, there are two cool sales on it. If coffee’s part of your daily routine, it makes a lot of sense to carefully choose the gear you’re touching on a daily basis. If you’ve got your brewing setup down, that means you should upgrade your mug. And there are few better travel mugs than the Contigo West Loop Travel Mug. More »
These Beautiful Speakers Are Your Jony-Ive-Designed-MoMA-Approved Deal of the Day
Posted in: Today's Chili Harman Kardon’s Sound Sticks speakers are a bit of a cult item in design circles. Why? There are a couple reasons: they’ve been permanently enshrined at the Museum of Modern Art, Apple design wunderkind Jony Ive designed them, and, well, just look at those speakers. The curvaceous clear body leaves nothing to the imagination, down to the visible tweeters and subwoofer. Originally these speakers were designed to complement the translucent iMac G4 Cube, but since then these speakers have taken a life of their own. More »
