Sony Releases Bloggie 3D Pocket Camcorder

10204_sony-bloggie-3d-01.jpgSony sees 3D as the next big feature for most consumer electronics. The company is wanting to take a bite out of the market with the new Bloggie point-and-shoot digital camcorder. The newest to the Bloggie line is the Bloggie 3D which has just come out in the market. Unlike the previous Bloggies, the new version supports 3D filming.

The Bloggie 3D has a 5.15 MP lens for still photos. It features a 4X Zoom, as well as the SteadyShot feature to prevent blurring. Its 3D playback requires no glasses, and it can hold 8 GB of internal memory. The best part of all is its low price. It retails for around $250. All major online stores, along with electronic retail stores, are selling the Bloggie 3D.

Nokia to Take On Tablets

Nokia LogoNokia is joining the ever-growing in-demand tablet market, according to Stephen Elop, the CEO of Nokia Corp. He said that the company is planning to design a unique tablet. Here are Mr. Elop’s full comments.

We have a number of options in the tablet computing space given the changing strategy that we have. For example, we could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have. Our team right now is assessing what’s the right tablet strategy for Nokia how does that fit in

There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace, only one of them is doing really well. My challenge to the team is I don’t want to be the 201st tablet on the market that you cannot tell from all of the others. We have to take an uniquely Nokia prospective and so the teams are working very hard on something that would be differentiating relative to everything else that is going on in the market

While Nokia has yet to set a target date or even develop one, we can all take a look at what we can expect from it. Since Nokia has dropped Symbian, that leaves us just two natural choices Windows or MeeGo. However, Nokia seems confident that its tablet will be state of the art, which means that Android or Linux could be used.

Like we stated above, all of this news is just the start of it for Nokia. But it should be exciting to see how Nokia takes on Apple, along with Android in this tough market.

The Facebook Box Prints Every Post in Your News Feed

Facebook Box

Checking Facebook on the Web or on your phone is so last week. Why not do it the retro way and sift through reams of printed sheets to read what your friends are up to? The Facebook Box, an invention of product designer Steve Murray, gives you a way to read and keep every status update and any of your friends posts: on paper.
The Facebook Box is essentially a printer that’s connected to your Facebook account, and every time a new post appears in your news feed, the tiny receipt printer in the device whirrs to life and prints it out on a tiny slip of paper. You can read it, toss it out, or file it in the space just to the right of the printer slot. When closed, the blue envelope-shaped box has the Facebook logo on the top and your name on the top, so everyone knows that your wall lives inside.
If you can’t tell, the Facebook Box is a bit tongue-in-cheek. The product page for it is rich with phrases like “social networking no longer needs to be restricted to the confines of a digital display.” Still, there may be a market for the Facebook Box, especially for those people who tend to print every e-mail they get and document they want to read.

Nook Updated to Android Froyo

nookcolor.jpg

Your Nook Color is now like a real Android tablet. The device just received a software update to give it Android software 2.2, also known as “Froyo.” This means it has access to the Android Market and full Internet connectivity.

The update comes after hackers routinely turned the Nook Color, which used to run on a very specialized and restricted version of Google’s mobile OS, into a fully functional Android tablet. Now it’s been done in an official way.

So now you can get an Android tablet at a pretty affordable price, and have full access to all of Nook’s features at the same time.

Acer Launches New Research Unit for Tablets and Smartphones

acer-iconia-tab-a500-05-370x370.jpgAcer has already released a tablet and may also have plans to release a smartphone or two, but the latest thing up Acer’s sleeve is the company’s plans to make tablets, along with smartphones, a key in the company. Acer is planning to launch a business unit for tablets and smartphones under the Acer brand.

The new unit will be doing the research and development of the new products. Acer, who appears to be trying to give the brand a makeover, has not released much info beyond the fact that a new business unit is being established.

Here is what the president of Acer, Jim Wong, had to say:

Touch/mobile devices open up a host of new opportunities. They form Acer’s new business and growth engine for the future. To focus on this market, we saw the need to allocate sufficient resources, and devise a new management structure different from the PC business specifically for this line of business

IDEAL 0101 Punches Holes in Hard Drives

IDEAL Drive Puncher

Most companies that want to dispose of their hard drives in-house buy a degausser. Most people who want to dispose of a hard drive hit it with a hammer or take it to a recycling center, if they dispose of it at all. With the IDEAL 0101 HDP from Duplo, you don’t have to put the effort into wrecking your hard drive yourself: you can just pop it into a machine and watch as a hole is punched clean through your hard drive.
The IDEAL 0101 is designed to be a fast and efficient drive destruction device, and that it is: you just feed the drive into the slot at the top and stand back, making sure your hands are clear when the stake – ejected with up to 3 tons of force – comes out of the side and goes through the drive. The device then opens the bottom panel and spits the drive out into a collector at the bottom, ready to go to your local recycling center.
You’ll have to spend $3300 retail to get one of these, so it’s doubtful they’ll pop up in homes anytime soon. However, considering that well-built degaussers can be dozens of thousands of dollars, this might be a good alternative for small to medium sized businesses with a pile of old drives they want to destroy.

RIM Hosts PlayBook Launch Party in NYC

playbookevent.jpg

Research in Motion officially kicked off its entry into the tablet market tonight in New York City. Filled with demo units, ambiance, and even a celebrity or two, tonight is the beginning of what could be the company’s most important product in recent history.

The Playbook tablet is a make-or-break device for RIM, after the company has lost double-digit market share in the smartphone space over the last year.

While RIM had fully functional Playbook tablets available at tonight’s event, and handed out retail boxed units to attendees, it is not yet available for general sale. It’ll start hitting stores within the next week.

The SupaBoy Puts the SNES in the Palm of Your Hand

SupaBoy Handheld SNES

If you fondly remember the Super Nintendo and all of the great, cartridge-based games that it had, the SupaBoy might be the handheld gaming system for you – especially if you still have tons of old SNES games lying around your house or in a box in your basement.  The SupaBoy will be manufactured by Hyperkin, a company known for third-party retro gaming gear, and will be compatible with real SNES cartridges.
The SupaBoy will feature a 3.5-inch color LCD in the center, a rechargeable battery that runs for about 5 hours, and AV out so you can connect it to a real big-screen television if you’re tired of playing your old SNES titles on a small set. You can even connect two SNES controllers to the ports on the front for multiplayer action.
Hyperkin tweeted about the product a few weeks ago, and followed up by announcing its plans to release the device in the United States this summer. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but old school gamers are likely to pick this one up.

Walmart to Shrink Size of Electronics Department

walmart.jpgWalmart is slowly shrinking the electronics department in stores across the nation. In the past few years, Walmart has expanded the electronic areas. But it now appears that the sales in gadgets have slumped causing Walmart to reorganize the stores. Walmart has stated that the focus will shift to outdoor and camping merchandise for now.

However, Walmart is maintaining that electronics are still a key part of the store, but made it clear that the sales of electronics have been disappointing for a while now. Most Walmart stores will set their electronics sections back to their original size, taking 2,000 square feet off the category in all stores.

Walmart did not release info on when the change will be made or how the company plays to compete with big-box electronic stores. Walmart has been working hard for years to beat Best Buy, but it now appears to be slowing down on that path.
