Seagate Sells a Slim 1TB Drive

GoFlex1TB.jpgWhen it comes to external hard drives, 1TB has become the new holy grail. Proving that mass storage doesn’t have to be bulky, Seagate is introducing the world’s slimmest 1TB portable, the 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex. This model uses a new 2.5-inch drive with two platters, each at 500GB, to maintain the same height and depth as 640GB and smaller GoFlex drives.

The drive comes pre-loaded with a copy of Star Trek for no additional cost. It also includes 20 other films which can be purchased and viewed. You’ll get a USB 3.0 cable for speedy transfers. With its thinner size, this is the first time a 1TB drive has been compatible with Seagate’s GoFlex TV device. The 1TB drive goes for $169.99, and the product page will update at 11AM ET today.

Apple’s App Store Blows Past 300,000

These days it seems that hardly a week goes by without learning about some new milestone for Apple. This weekend, it seems, the company hit a pretty impressive one with its App Store, which crossed the 300,000 mark–and, naturally, just kept on going. That number includes both iPhone and iPad-centric apps.

The total includes roughly 200,000 paid and 100,000 free apps. Apple, surprisingly, hasn’t done much to talk up the number yet–the company is most likely waiting until its OS X event in Cupertino later this week to make an official announcement about the numbers.

The question, as always, remains whether or not app stores from Google’s Android, RIM’s BlackBerry, Palm, and, most recently, Windows Phone 7 will ever be able to catch up. Also, no word on how many of the aforementioned apps are fart-centric.

Cable Collar Cuts Down on Excess Cords

cable_collar.jpg

You’ve got to hand it to Quirky. The invention site has quickly transformed itself into a repository for all things why-didn’t-I-think-of-that. The site’s latest product, The Cable Collar, is a pretty perfect example of logical simplicity.

The product adds a cord wrap to the perimeter of an outlet face, letting the user manage line slack around the plug. There are six anchor notches on the outside of the Cable Collar to keep the cable in place.

The Cable Collar is the 57th product to be developed through the Quirky community since the site launched in June of last year. The product is made of hard plastic that promises not to mess with the electrical connection. A plus, certainly, for an outlet plate.

Fresh out of the development phase, you can pre-order the thing for $6.99 through Quirky.

Informercially video for the product after the jump.

iPad Hits Verizon Stores, Being Bundled With Mi-Fi

Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

A Verizon iPhone? Not quite. Not yet. At the very least, however, this surprising bit of news seems to mark the fact that, if there were any issues between Apple and Verizon in the past (Verizon famously was said to have fatefully opted not to carrying the iPhone before launch) that’s all water under the bridge now.

Apple has added yet another store to the ever-growing list of stores that stock the iPad. Verizon Wireless is joining Apple Stores, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Sam’s Club in stocking the massively popular consumer tablet.

The companies issued a joint statement on the seeming odd matching. Apple’s COO Tim Cook seemed pretty enthusiastic about the whole thing (really? You couldn’t get a sentence-long quote from Steve Jobs about how utterly exciting and amazing the whole thing is?),

We’re thrilled to be working with Verizon Wireless to get iPad into the hands of even more customers this holiday season. iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before, and together with Verizon Wireless we’re offering an easy way to stay connected wherever you go.

Verizon’s own COO John Stratton, meanwhile, called the match “the perfect pairing for holiday travels.” Just like a pine tree and spray-on snow, right John?

What’s perhaps most interesting about the pairing is the fact that the iPad will be bundled with the Verizon Mi-Fi. The package comes in three pricing tiers–$629.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 16GB and the MiFi, $729.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 32GB and the MiFi, and $829.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 64GB and the MiFi.

There’s no 3G AT&T version, naturally.

iPad Coming to Sam’s Club

Good news, now you can pick up an iPad and iPhone in the same place you buy your toilet paper in bulk. Sam’s Club is set to become the most recent large retailer to offer the iPad, following the lead of Target, Best Buy, and, most recently, Walmart, the owner of the membership-only retailer.

The addition of the warehouse chain is the latest announcement in what is shaping up to be an incredible aggressive holiday season for Apple’s iPad. The tablet sold more than three million units in its first 80 days–a faster adoption rate than the iPhone and DVD player.

The Balanzza Mini Luggage Scale Makes You Pack Light

Balanzza Mini

If you travel by air frequently, you already know most carriers charge you for checked baggage over a certain weight limit. To avoid paying out of pocket at the check-in counter, it helps to know before you leave the house how much your bags weigh so you can either leave some things behind or redistribute the load. That’s where the Balanzza Mini, a tiny, hand-held luggage scale, comes in.
Just attach the Balanzza Mini to your luggage and lift up your bag by the scale handle to see how much your bag weighs. The scale has a maximum supported weight of 100lbs, but if you’re carrying that much on a plane in one bag, you’re already got problems. Considering most carriers charge anywhere from $40 to $180 US for overweight bags, the Balanzza Mini’s retail price of $24.95 is a small price to pay to make sure you never pay weight fees again.

Pogoplug Pro Turns Black, Gets Wi-Fi

Pogoplug ProIf you’re not familiar with the Pogoplug, you’re missing out: the handy little gadget will set you back $99 USD, is available exclusively at Best Buy retail stores, and turns any four USB devices you plug into it into Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices as soon as you plug the Pogoplug into your home network. Just connect the Pogoplug to your router via wired Ethernet, and your USB drives are suddenly available to all of the computers in your home, not just one.

The new Pogoplug Pro makes the whole process a little easier by removing the need to plug in your Pogoplug via wired Ethernet. The “Pro” version adds Wi-Fi, and changes the Pogoplug’s former hot-pink exterior to a sleek black one. It still offers media streaming and network sharing, the same as the original, and even has mobile and desktop apps to help you access your files at home on the go.  The best part though is the price hasn’t changed, and both versions will run you $99 list.

The Scariest Gadgets Around

Telenoid R1.jpg

With Halloween just around the corner, what better time to examine some of the scariest technology around. I’m not talking about all of the electronic vampires and ghost that tend to pop up in the holiday section of your local drugstore chain–these are gadgets that can actually maim you, light you on fire, or worse.

We asked the PCMag staff to pull together some of the creepiest, scariest, and generally worrisome gadgets around.

Tampa Bay Rays Obsessed with iPad Farmville Knockoff

tampa-bay-mascot.jpg

Having trouble justifying your grownup Farmville obsession to your friends, family, and co-workers? Don’t be ashamed, be proud–after all, you’re in good company. Battered by the stresses of post-season play, it seems that the Tampa Bay Rays have gotten themselves hooked on We Farm, a Farmville knockoff for the iPad.

The game infiltrated the team’s clubhouse by way of pitcher James Shields, whose seven-year-old daughter turned him on to the farm-simulating mobile app. Now players David Price, Chad Qualls, Kelly Shoppach, Matt Joyce, Matt Garza, and B.J. Upton are in on the fake crop-growing action.

“We definitely have the iPad addiction,” pitcher Jeff Niemann told Yahoo Sports. “All of us, in some way, shape or form.”

Niemann apparently doesn’t go in for the fake farming thing. He’s more of an Angry Birds guy. “You throw birds at things and break stuff,” he told the site. “We have fun. We can turn the brain off for a little bit.”

iPad on Sale at Walmart

Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

Apple’s iPad has already surpassed the iPhone and DVD player, in terms of adoption rate. The device is far and away the leader in the consumer tablet space, and while the company is set to see a glut of competition from the likes of Samsung, Dell, RIM, and HP, those companies have a lot of catching up to do.

The device, which is currently available through Apple Stores, Target, and Best Buy is likely only going to gain momentum as we move closer to the holiday season–the fact that the tablet is currently available for sale through Walmart.com certainly doesn’t hurt.

The site for the mega-chain now features a section called “iPad & eReaders,” where users can by the device is six different configurations, priced $499 to $829. At present, however, the $499, $599, and $629 versions are currently listed out of stock. The $699 and $729 versions are listed as both “In Stock” and “Coming Soon.”

Only the $829 version, it seems is both “In Stock” and currently available through the site. If only there were another place online to buy the thing
