Samsung Galaxy Beam Sequel Might Be In The Works

Samsung Galaxy Beam Sequel Might Be In The WorksIt was a wee bit more than two years ago that Samsung announced a smartphone with a built-in projector, calling it the Samsung Galaxy Beam for obvious reasons. I suppose that the idea of such a handset was this – if smartphones with integrated cameras were able to work great and sell really well, why not try something else which might result in a new phenomenon? Unfortunately for Samsung, that particular idea did not really take off, and just how many people do you know exactly who tote around a Samsung Galaxy Beam? Well, Samsung might be making an attempt to prove the adage “if at first you fail, try again” to be true with the Samsung SM-G3858 that will build on its predecessor without breaking out of the mid-range mold.

Texas Instruments brings sci-fi tech to life with DLP (hands-on video)

Texas Instruments brings scifi tech to life with DLP handson video

We’ve come across a number of DLP-based pico projectors over the years and while these products are getting smaller, brighter and higher resolution, it’s the integration with other devices that’s really captured our imagination. Samsung’s Galaxy Beam, which we reviewed last year, merges a 15-lumen nHD (640×360) DLP-based pico projector with a Galaxy S Advance. More recently at CES 2013, Texas Instruments announced its new Tilt & Roll Pixel chip architecture and demoed a handful of other DLP-equipped products live on our stage, including 3M’s Streaming Projector and Smart Devices’ U7 tablet.

The company recently invited us to play with some of these devices and to show us other applications in areas such as 3D printing, 3D scanning, optical research, medical imaging and even automotive. Some of this DLP-equipped tech, like the Interactive Center Console, shows where we’re headed in the near future — other products, like Christie’s VeinViewer Flex, exist today but remind us of something right out of science-fiction. Take a look at our galleries below, then join us after the break for our hands-on video and more info on these devices.

Samsung Galaxy Beam review: stay for the projector, but nothing more

Samsung Galaxy Beam review stay for the projector, but that's it

With a seemingly endless stream of flagship phones hitting the market before the holiday season, it can be easy to forget some of the other devices that play a more niche audience. The Samsung Galaxy Beam definitely belongs in this category, as it includes a built-in Texas Instruments DLP pico projector. All told, the phone faces a lofty challenge: while the projector could be useful for the PowerPoint crowd, the phone itself falls on the lower end of mid-range, and isn’t powerful enough to do business users much good otherwise. With a 1GHz dual-core NovaThor CPU, an overly outdated OS, a 2010-era display and a middling 5-megapixel camera, the Beam’s target demographic appears to be ridiculously small. Still, might the projector be enough to carry this device to its full potential? Does a niche device like this have a place in such a crowded market? Read on to get in touch with our thoughts, feelings and emotions regarding the Samsung Galaxy Beam.

Samsung rolling Jelly Bean out across most of its smartphone, tablet lineup ‘soon’

    Samsung Jelly Bean

Now that Samsung has commenced beaming Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OTA toward deserving Galaxy S III customers, it’s announced a raft of other devices set to receive the buttery OS in the near future. On the list are the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy S Advance, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Music, Galaxy Chat, Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy mini II and Galaxy S Duos. That should bring a bit of extra speed and smoothness to those devices, along with Google Now for search and Samsung’s own flourishes from the latest TouchWiz UX. As for the rest of us, there’s more than one way to skin a Smartphone — or avoid skinning one, as the case may be.

Samsung Galaxy Beam now available for purchase in the UK

Android manufacturers look for any way to be different with the latest device as they are all running software that is often perceived by users as being similar. The Samsung Galaxy Beam, announced back in February, looks to separate itself with its built-in projector. If you’ve been anticipating this phone’s release, the device is now available in the UK for £395 with no contract obligations on Expansys. This is one step closer to a U.S release for which we still don’t have a date.

If you are unfamiliar with the Galaxy Beam, it features a 4-inch WVGA screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, and Android 2.3(GingerBread). If you’re interested about the projector, it radiates 15 lumens and can project an image up to 50 inches with 640×360 resolution. Samsung is also claiming that the Galaxy Beam is the slimmest projector phone at 12.5mm. What do you think of the Galaxy Beam? Would you be willing to buy it for its unique projector despite running on an older OS and the expensive price tag? Let us know in the comment section below.

Samsung Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace 2 resurface, get proper launches in Singapore and Taiwan

Samsung Galaxy Beam, Galaxy Ace 2 resurface, get proper launches in Singapore and Taiwan

Samsung has been quiet on the subject of its second-generation Galaxy Beam and the Galaxy Ace 2 ever since they showed together in Barcelona this February, but the two just reemerged as close buddies for an initial launch in East Asia. The Galaxy Beam receives the grandest introduction, as it’s coming to Singapore on July 7th followed by a more nebulous mid-July release for Taiwan residents. Those craving tiny, dual-core TouchWiz will have no choice but to flock to Singapore and pick up an Ace 2 at the end of the month. There’s no word on where else they’ll go on their respective world tours, although the cash outlay is strictly in the middle of the pack: we’re looking at S$648 or NT$16,900 ($513 or $566) off-contract for a Galaxy Beam, while its more diminutive cousin carries a S$438 ($352) price tag on similar terms.
