Galaxy Gear 2 Rumored To Be Priced Lower Than iWatch

Galaxy Gear 2 Rumored To Be Priced Lower Than iWatchThe Samsung Galaxy Gear does not come cheap, especially for a device that is in a relatively new market. At the same time it isn’t prohibitively expensive either, but with so many different smartwatches to choose from, perhaps Samsung could be looking at price as a differentiating factor for future Galaxy Gear devices. This is according to a new set of rumors which seems to suggest that Samsung could be feeling the pressure from the rumors that Apple could be prepping a smartwatch of their own called the iWatch and because of that, they could be thinking of lowering the price of the Galaxy Gear 2.

According to the rumors, it has been suggested that Apple could price their iWatch at $299 which is the same price of the Galaxy Gear when it was first released. It is because of that that Samsung could be thinking of dropping the price of the Galaxy Gear 2 in order to make it a more attractive alternative piece of technology to the iWatch. Price is undoubtedly a factor many take into consideration when purchasing a gadget, but features matter too, so perhaps if the Galaxy Gear 2 were to be as impressive as the iWatch, then perhaps Samsung could beat out Apple on price. Either way take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think?

Galaxy S5 Launch ‘Confirmed’ For MWC 2014

Galaxy S5 Launch Confirmed For MWC 2014

There have been a lot of rumors about the Galaxy S5 launch, even though Samsung has already rolled out invitations for its Unpacked 5 event, which will be held on February 24, the day Mobile World Congress 2014 kicks off in Barcelona. Today the New York Times claims to have heard from its sources that Galaxy S5 is indeed going to be the device Samsung unveils at the event, and that contrary to some media reports, Samsung is sticking with the Galaxy S5 moniker for its next flagship. The report also claims that a new Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be launched alongside the Galaxy S5.

    Galaxy Gear Price Cut Possible

    Galaxy Gear Price Cut Possible

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch was unveiled alongside Galaxy Note 3 at IFA last year. This smartwatch was initially only compatible with a couple of Samsung mobile devices, but since then the company has expanded its support base, only to its own devices though, Galaxy Gear doesn’t play nice with devices from other Android manufacturers. The company is expected to announce a successor in the coming weeks, which is what makes this rumor a bit believable. Word on the street is that a global Galaxy Gear price cut may be on the cards.

Samsung Said To Be Planning ‘Galaxy Glass’ Computing Eyeware This Fall

    galaxy-glass

Samsung was early to market with a smartwatch in the Galaxy Gear, and now it looks like it might be one of the first in the mix with a glasses-based computing device. A new report from the Korea Times (via Verge) suggests that Samsung is currently developing a Google Glass competitor, which is in fact provisionally named “Galaxy Glass,” set for launch in September at the annual IFA tech conference.

Google has yet to put a firm timeline on the consumer launch of its own Google Glass wearable computer, which is available to developers and early adopters via Google’s ‘Explorer’ program. Some reports had suggested a general launch for late 2013, but then later information from Google revised the release timeline to sometime in 2014. Samsung could conceivably beat Google to the punch, but as we saw with the Galaxy Gear, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

The Gear was likewise telegraphed before its actual launch, with Samsung coming right out and admitting the device was on the way at IFA. This time around, there’s no named source discussing the device, but the Korea Times does quote a Samsung official as saying that the potential in the market is huge, and that Samsung is very interested in getting a first-mover advantage in the space.

As for what Samsung Glass would do, it sounds like it would essentially provide a basic heads-up display for your smartphone on your face, pushing notifications, music playback information and basic controls to the lens of a head-mounted display.

Samsung getting in among the early crop of device-makers hoping to ride this trend is in keeping with its recent strategy, which seems to be one of putting everything they can out as a shipping product. It’s a plan that gets them lots of props as a company eager to pursue innovation and drive new product development, but the first-mover advantage has only questionable use value if these first generation products keep failing to impress.

Both the smartwatch and the eyeware-based computing models are interesting because OEMs seem to be pursuing them fairly aggressively without any evidence that this is a direction consumers necessarily are interested in. We’ll apparently see in September if Samsung has managed to build a face computer that moves the tech forward, however.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Rumored To Be More Fashionable, Could Sport A Flexible Display

Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-47When the Samsung Galaxy Gear was announced last year, it was met with a lot of enthusiasm. After all not only was Samsung joining the wearable tech race, but many were also interested to see what Apple’s rival could have in store for them. While Samsung made a good effort with the Galaxy Gear, flaws such as limited device compatibility and poor battery life (about a day’s worth, last we checked) prevented it from going on to be a huge success. Perhaps Samsung is learning from their mistakes or perhaps they are trying something new, but according to a report from ZDNet Korea, the Galaxy Gear 2 is expected to be something of a radical departure from its predecessor.

According to the report which was based on tips from unnamed Samsung officials, the Galaxy Gear 2 will feature a major redesign and will launch as more of a fashion product rather than a technological gadget. It has also been suggested that it will feature a flexible/curved display. This particular rumor is not completely out of the question as Samsung has shown off its curved displays before, such as in the Galaxy Round, so for them to make a watch with a curve display is possible. Their sources go on to state that the Galaxy Gear 2 could even be announced in London, with the announcement taking place in March or April, less than a year from the original Galaxy Gear announcement because apparently Samsung is worried about Apple and LG launching their own wearable devices. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully Samsung will learn from the mistakes of the Galaxy Gear and surprise us with a successor.

Developer Makes Galaxy Gear Work With Nexus 5

Developer Makes Galaxy Gear Work With Nexus 5Samsung released its highly anticipated smartwatch last year. The Galaxy Gear was unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 3, at first the phablet was the only Samsung device compatible with the smartwatch. Over time, Samsung has added support to a plethora of its existing devices, though the fact remains that Galaxy Gear can only function with Samsung devices, at least officially though. A developer has found a way to make Galaxy Gear work with Nexus 5, despite the fact that the smartwatch does not officially support this smartphone. (more…)

Think Software Keyboards Don’t Work On Smartwatches? Check Out Minuum’s New Video

    minuum-feature

As smartwatches become a device category that most major hardware makers are turning their attention to, there’s a question of how much smartphone utility we’ll be able to translate to the wrist. One big convenience hurdle is making it possible to reply to texts and emails quickly from the wrist, and that’s where Minuum‘s go-anywhere software keyboard comes in.

The Minuum keyboard from Toronto-based startup Whirlscape is an alternative input method originally prototyped on smartphones that makes it easier to type naturally without using much of the screen. It launched previously in beta on Android, and has done well on smartphones, according to user reviews.

Whirlscape had always designed their keyboard to be usable on any number of connected devices, including wearables, the founders told me in the past. Today, they’ve got proof: As you can see in the video above, Minuum running on a Galaxy Gear smartwatch manages text input much more conveniently than you might imagine possible from a screen so small. It was filmed in a single take, too, according to the Minuum team, without any fancy camera tricks.

For now, Minuum says this is just an “in-house demo,” at least until Samsung opens up the Gear platform, but the company also tells me that it’s already in talks with other smartwatch manufacturers who can put the software on shipping devices “in the upcoming months.”

Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way Onto The Samsung Galaxy Gear

The Samsung Galaxy Gear is Samsung’s attempts at a wearable device in the form of a smartwatch. It might not be Samsung’s best efforts but it sure made the headlines, and for those who would rather not look silly trying to speak to your wrist, how does typing sound to you? The screen is admittedly too small for typing, but if you had a keyboard with great predictability, perhaps it might work, and it seems that the folks at Fleksy have managed to port their Android keyboard over onto the Galaxy Gear, as you can see in the video above (courtesy of The Verge).

For those hearing about Fleksy for the first time, this is a keyboard alternative to the default keyboard that comes with Android. It relies on a series of gestures and swipes to help users complete words, erase words, and to punctuate. So far the keyboard has been met with pretty positive reviews although it does get some getting used to at the start. Like we said given that Fleksy allows users to swipe to autocomplete words and to punctuate, it seems that it could actually work out!

For those who have the Galaxy Gear and don’t mind giving it a go, all you’d have to do is head on over to the Google Play store to download the APK, and sideload it into the watch and you’re good to go. Presumably once Samsung launches an app store for the Galaxy Gear, you should be able to get it officially then. Pretty nifty, huh?

Samsung Might Be Teasing Galaxy Gear Successor On Twitter

Samsung Might Be Teasing Galaxy Gear Successor On Twitter

Late last year we heard that Samsung had already started working on a Galaxy Gear successor after multiple rumors came in claiming that sales of the first Galaxy Gear were below expectations. While the company hasn’t denied that another smartwatch is on the cards for 2014, it hasn’t exactly said when we can expect a successor. The official Twitter account of Samsung Mobile UK seems to have teased a new wearable device from Samsung. It tweeted an image, asking people “What do you want Samsung to unveil in 2014?”

On the left of the image there’s a Galaxy Gear with the year it was released in mentioned below. To the right, there’s an empty space with the words “What’s Next?” and 2014 written underneath, which definitely means that whatever it is, its going to be released this year. Now it could go both ways, this product might be the Galaxy Gear 2 or an entirely different wearable device, its too soon to be sure right now. Can we expect an announcement at CES 2014? It has only been over three months since the original Galaxy Gear came out. Perhaps we might get to see a new wearable device at MWC which takes place next month, where Samsung is also expected to unveil the Galaxy S5.

Samsung Patent Hints At Galaxy Gear Type Device With Flexible Display

Samsung Patent Hints At Galaxy Gear Type Device With Flexible Display

Samsung launched its much hyped smartwatch earlier this year, called the Galaxy Gear. It was marketed as a companion gadget for your Galaxy smartphone or phablet, and while it does serve that purpose, the smartwatch hasn’t exactly turned out to be a hit. The company is already rumored to be working on a successor that some believe might even be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 next month. A recent patent filing reveals a product that’s quite like the Galaxy Gear, though its thinner and has a flexible display. Could this possibly relate to the Galaxy Gear 2?

Perhaps not, because some believe that this might be related to Galaxy Band. It was recently rumored that Samsung is working on something that might be called the Galaxy Band. It is said to be a fitness focused wearable device that would have a number of sensors for monitoring things like heart rate, temperature, humidity and more. The patent itself hints at that possibility, as one illustration depicts a user taking the device along on his wrist for a bike ride, with the device seen communicating wirelessly with a smartphone in the user’s bag. Samsung obviously is mum about any such device, though it is expected to focus on wearable devices in the coming year.
