New Galaxy Gear Ad Is Cringeworthy

Ads from companies that make our favorite products can often induce various emotions, just look at the tear jerker that Google ran for the Nexus 5, Apple’s recent holiday themed ad for its new iPhone was certainly along the same lines. Samsung has released a new ad for its Galaxy Gear smartwatch ahead of the holiday season and lets just be absolutely clear about the fact that it won’t make you cry, but it may make you cringe.

The ad runs for about two and a half minutes and its about two men who are pursuing one woman. Seems like a pretty normal premise but the way Jack, the man touting Galaxy Gear on his wrist, goes about wooing the blonde beauty is actually quite cringeworthy. Not only does he follow the girl around and clandestinely photograph her through the smartwatch, he manages to look creepy doing it. Obviously Jack gets the girl in the end, thanks to his smartwatch hooked up to his Samsung Galaxy Note 3 while the other man is hopelessly lost without the smartwatch. The ad is posted above, do check it out if you’re willing to subject yourself to some cringeworthy content. What is it with ads like these, Nokia went for the horrifying and creepy effect with its latest ad for the Lumia 2520 tablet.

Galaxy Gear Update Brings Ability To View Gmail, Facebook And Twitter Messages

Galaxy Gear Update Brings Ability To View Gmail, Facebook And Twitter Messages

When Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch earlier this year, it had limited functionality and a limited number of apps. Since then the company has rolled out several major software updates for the smartwatch which have added new features. Only recently a major update was released which makes Galaxy Gear capable of displaying notifications from all apps installed on the user’s compatible smartphone. Today’s update brings the ability to view Gmail, Facebook and Twitter messages, albeit to a certain length after which the phone must be taken out to continue reading. The update is being rolled out in stages, so it will take some time before it goes live in all regions.

The feature isn’t perfect, in the sense that users can’t go through an entire message on their smartwatch, but it does offer a glimpse which should be more than enough in most cases to determine if the message warrants an immediate response. This update also improves Smart Relay, which makes switching between the Galaxy Gear and the Samsung device much more easier. The lift and pause gesture movement to active the clock has been improved as well. Samsung has started off with three of the most popular applications, it remains to be seen if it opens up this functionality to other apps, like instant messaging clients. Galaxy Gear owners probably wouldn’t mind being able to read snippets of incoming WhatsApp messages.

Samsung Galaxy Band Rumored To Be The Galaxy Gear’s Successor

Samsung Galaxy Band Rumored To Be The Galaxy Gears SuccessorThe Samsung Galaxy Gear was announced a few months ago and while the device was an interesting one, one of the reasons why it was not as well-received was due to its battery life which was around 1 day’s worth, and nobody really likes to have to charge their watch on a daily basis, right? Unsurprisingly we have heard the rumors that Samsung is already prepping the successor to the Galaxy Gear which will hopefully address some of the issues, and if the latest rumors are to be believed, the device could be known as the Galaxy Band, as opposed to the Galaxy Gear 2. We’re not sure what’s with the different naming, but perhaps Samsung wants to distance itself from the flop that was the Galaxy Gear with a new product name.

Also more interesting would be how it has been rumored that a former Apple software engineer, Luc Julia, would be the one to lead the development of the Galaxy Band. Julia had left Apple for Samsung awhile ago and given that he was one of the software engineers for Siri, it will be interesting to see if he will be bringing some of his expertise over into the Galaxy Band. There’s no telling when Samsung will launch the Galaxy Band, but the rumors are claiming that 2014 is a possibility, with speculated dates as early as CES 2014 or MWC 2014 which will be taking place in January and February of 2014 respectively. Until then do take it with a grain of salt.

Galaxy Gear Update Improves Battery Life And Notifications

Galaxy Gear Update Improves Battery Life And Notifications

Samsung’s smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, didn’t exactly prove to be a hit this year but that doesn’t mean that the company will drop support for it just yet. Two of the biggest issues that were voiced after its release were the dismal battery life and the inability to display notifications from all applications. Samsung addressed both issues through a software update earlier this month, the update has finally been released in the U.S. Build V700XXUAMK7 for Galaxy Gear improves battery life as well as the notifications.

Apart from that, the latest Galaxy Gear update also improves range, connection and the overall performance. It also features a faster S Voice. The enhanced battery life would no doubt be well received, users will also be stoked about finally being able to receive notifications from all built-in as well as third-party applications on their smartwatch. With support for the Galaxy Gear slowly being added to a variety of Samsung devices, its about time that these issues were addressed so that potential customers wouldn’t hesitate in making a decision about picking one up. The update is being rolled out over the air, so Galaxy Gear owners in the U.S. should receive a notification shortly if they haven’t already. Alternatively, the smartwatch may also be updated through the Samsung Kies software.

AT&T Galaxy Note 2 Update Brings Galaxy Gear Support And More

AT&T Galaxy Note 2 Update Brings Galaxy Gear Support And More

A few weeks back a schedule was leaked online which detailed when major U.S. carriers will roll out Android 4.3 for several Galaxy devices. Most of the updates were rolled out according to the exact same schedule, however some took their time, AT&T is a perfect example. The carrier today rolled out the Android 4.3 update for its Galaxy Note 2 subscribers. Not only does it brings a major core OS update, it also adds support for the company’s smartwatch, which was released earlier this year.

Slowly but surely the Galaxy Gear support has been added to a variety of existing Samsung devices, including those that were released over two years ago. When it was initially launched, the Galaxy Gear only supported a handful of the latest Galaxy devices. The update also brings performance improvements and bug fixes apart from support for the Samsung Knox enterprise security suite. Premium Suite features are included in the update too, such as PEN.UP, Group Play 2.5, Multi-Window from Note 3, Group Messaging, New Easy Mode and more. AT&T’s Android 4.3 update for Galaxy Note 2 is being rolled out in stages so it may take a while before the update is live across all regions. Build I317UCUBMK6 should pop up on your device in the near future if it hasn’t already.

Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini Now Supports Galaxy Gear

Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini Now Supports Galaxy Gear

Earlier this year when Samsung released the Galaxy Gear smartwatch only a handful of the company’s devices were able to support it. Since then an update has been rolled out which widens the net, allowing more and more people to hook up their $299 smartwatch with their Samsung devices. Support is only limited to the company’s own devices, so its not like anyone with an Android device from another OEM can take advantage of the smartwatch. Galaxy S4 Mini owners on Verizon are in luck as the Big Red has rolled out an update which brings support for the wearable device.

Apart from that, Big Red also claims that the update is going to improve the performance of the Galaxy S4 Mini. A number of issues have also been resolved and exchange email server connectivity, Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, Isis Mobile wallet and Google Voice prompt timing have all been improved. The update also comes with a handsome amount of bloatware, apps that the carrier bundles with the update itself. Verizon’s MyInfoZone Widget, Verizon Cloud, and VMWare are baked into this update. The update is going to be rolled out over-the-air, that too in stages. So if hasn’t popped up on your Galaxy S4 Mini right now, don’t worry as you will definitely be receiving a notification soon.

Samsung Will Reportedly Focus On Smartphone Accessories And Peripherals In 2014

Samsung Will Reportedly Focus On Smartphone Accessories And Peripherals In 2014

Samsung is believed to shake up things next year. It is rumored that the company has lowered its smartphone sales expectations for the coming year, down to just 330 million units. Furthermore, it has also been said that Samsung will focus more on low-end devices and tablets, and that it might also bring back tablets with AMOLED displays. As per the latest rumors, to make up for the reduced smartphone sales, the company might increase its focus on making smartphone accessories and peripherals next year.

The reason for this is believed to be very simple, the company wants to maintain profitability. While it might expect smartphone demand to slow down, particularly in the high-end segment, demand for accessories such as cases, covers and batteries is likely to increase. Which is why Samsung might focus on making more accessories so as to generate more profit. Peripherals are also expected to receive special attention next year. Having already released a smartwatch this year, Samsung is already believed to be working on its Galaxy Gear successor. Furthermore, the company is also said to have a device called Gear Glass under the wraps, this is believed to be a Google Glass rival. Samsung hasn’t officially revealed its product map for 2014, but if these rumors hold any weight, we can expect the company to embark down a slightly different road in the coming months.

Galaxy Gear Faces The HK 417 Rifle

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch has been around for quite a few months now. You might have read many reviews and seen many tests of the smartwatch up till now, but what you’re about to see is something totally different. Known for his habit of fire shots at gadgets, technology assassin Richard Ryan is back and this time his target is the Galaxy Gear. His weapon of choice is the HK 417 rifle, just one shot is enough to take out the smartwatch.

At first, Ryan puts the Galaxy Gear through its paces. He drops it in water, on concrete and and in the dirt. The smartwatch is able to survive all of those tests, which isn’t a surprise, the smartwatch does feel quite sturdy and seems to be quite durable. If you have watched Ryan’s videos in the past, you’ll know that no device makes it out alive. Once he’s done with the tests, Ryan brings out the rifle and fires a single shot at the Galaxy Gear. The slow motion video is interesting to watch as we get to see just how much damage a single shot can do to the smartwatch. Who knows what device he will have in his crosshairs next, Ryan blew up an Xbox One prior to the Galaxy Gear.

ZTE Smartwatch Will Reportedly Be Able To Make Phone Calls On Its Own

ZTE Smartwatch Will Reportedly Be Able To Make Phone Calls On Its Own

A couple of weeks ago it was rumored that Chinese manufacturer ZTE is going to release its smartwatch early next year. The company has confirmed that it does intend on releasing a smartwatch in Q1, 2014. The smartwatch will initially be exclusive to ZTE’s smartphones, though ZTE has said that it will make smartwatches in the future that will work with Android devices from other manufacturers. ZTE smartwatch is expected to offer features similar to the Galaxy Gear at a relatively low price, rumor has it that the device might have a feature that the Galaxy Gear lacks, the ability to make phone calls on its own.

It is believed that the ZTE smartwatch will be able to make phone calls as it will be able to house a micro-SIM card inside. This feature would certainly give it a leg up on the Samsung Galaxy Gear. It is also said that the camera on this smartwatch will be positioned in such a way that it is possible to make video calls as well. No word as yet on the expected pricing, but it is likely to be under $300 since ZTE’s goal is to price its smartwatch lower than what Samsung sells its smartwatch for. An exact release date has not been confirmed as yet.
