AT&T’s Galaxy S 4 starts receiving Android 4.3 (again), Galaxy Gear gets compatibility update

Earlier this month, AT&T began rolling out Android 4.3 to its variant of the Galaxy S 4, only to have it pulled in order to focus on “potential improvements.” Here’s the good news: the Rethink Possible carrier today started the process of, once again, bringing the Jelly Bean updates to Samsung’s flagship smartphone. As a refresher, Android 4.3 brings a lot of improvements and enhancements that make the overall experience an even more pleasant one — some of which include OpenGL ES 3.0 support, Bluetooth Smart technology and enriched notification access. What’s more, AT&T’s also releasing an update for the Galaxy Gear that makes it compatible with the GS4, which is great news for folks on the network who own both Samsung devices. Let us know in the comments how these updates are working out for you thus far — and here’s hoping this one is here to stay.

Galaxy Gear 2 Will Reportedly Be Launched Alongside Galaxy S5

Galaxy Gear 2 Will Reportedly Be Launched Alongside Galaxy S5

Samsung is definitely going to release updated variants of its products in 2014 and those interested in wearable technology are anxiously to see just what the company will introduce with its next generation smartwatch, which we’ll call Galaxy Gear 2. Only recently Samsung pushed out a major firmware update for Galaxy Gear to improve its notifications feature. The smartwatch was launched in September this year alongside the Galaxy Note 3, and if local media reports coming in from Korea are correct, the Galaxy Gear 2 might partner up with the Galaxy S5 which according to another recent rumor is due to be released in March 2014.

There have been reports of Galaxy Gear not selling well, critics of the product can definitely find faults in it. Some say that the smartwatch is too thick, and Samsung just might have something to appease them. Rumor has it that the Galaxy Gear 2 is going to be 15-20 percent thinner than the existing smartwatch, which would quite frankly be a welcome step. It hasn’t been said as yet what additional improvements we can expect from Galaxy Gear 2, so we’ll just have to wait and see if there are any further leaks about the smartwatch. Samsung claims that it has sold over 800,000 units of the Galaxy Gear, perhaps it can sell even more if the smartwatch is much thinner, lighter and has even more features.

Samsung is fixing a big drawback of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, allowing it to display notifications

Control TV From Galaxy Gear Using Smart Remote App

Control TV From Galaxy Gear Using Smart Remote App

If one were to list possible uses for a smartwatch, controlling a television set just might make the list. The Samsung Galaxy Gear can already do a lot of things, such as taking photos and displaying full notifications and now it can control TVs as well thanks to the Smart Remote app. The app has been developed by Samsung and Peel, who make the WatchOn app found on the former’s devices. Smart Remote basically controls WatchOn app on the smartphone, since the IR blaster on Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 already allow users to control their TV sets.

The advantage of having Smart Remote on Galaxy Gear is that users don’t have to keep their Galaxy S4 or Note 3 in their hands all the time, though they will need to place it as such that the IR blaster is facing the TV. That’s because the signal to switch channels, control volume or even power off will go through the device’s IR blaster given the fact that Galaxy Gear does not have one of its own. Those who’re interested can download the app on their smartwatch from the Gear Manager app on their smartphone, the smartwatch must be paired for the app to install. Samsung Refutes Poor Galaxy Gear Sales, Claims 800,000 Units Sold To Date

Samsung Refutes Poor Galaxy Gear Sales, Claims 800,000 Units Sold To DateAccording to our report earlier this morning, it was suggested that Samsung had only sold 50,000 Galaxy Gear units to date, with reports claiming that the company was selling a meager 800-900 units per day. It turns out that the report was wrong as Samsung as a new report from Reuters has Samsung claiming that they have managed to sell a whopping 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in a span of two months since it was launched. In fact Samsung is going as far as calling it the world’s most popular smartwatch, stating, “It’s the most sold wearable watch available in the market place…and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear.”

This claim completely goes against what we had heard, and in fact Samsung claims that the amount of Galaxy Gear units sold has exceed their initial expectations, forcing Samsung to extend the sales promotion during the holiday season to try and garner even more sales. The Galaxy Gear, while a decent effort from Samsung, was a little pricier than some would have liked at $300. That and coupled with the fact that the device would not be support all of Samsung’s smartphones, and how its battery was only good for a day has left it open to criticism.

Assuming the 800,000 figure is correct, we’ll have to admit that it is an impressive feat by Samsung, and if anything it goes to show that perhaps the market is indeed ready for wearable electronics after all. What do you guys think?

Samsung Galaxy Gear Gets Its First Custom ROM

Samsung Galaxy Gear Gets Its First Custom ROMThanks to the folks at the XDA Developers forum, it seems that the Samsung Galaxy Gear has gotten its first custom ROM. The custom ROM was developed by an XDA member who goes by the handle, fOmey, who based the ROM on the MK7 ROM. The ROM for the Galaxy Gear has since been given the name “null” and will incorporate a couple of features that should make the device a tad more appealing, or at least give would-be customers a reason to get their hands on the device if they are able to access different and newer features not being offered by Samsung’s own software.

The ROM will allow for installation of other launchers, such as Nova Launcher, and will also support the installation of native Android apps, although given the Galaxy Gear’s small display, we’re not sure if the end result will be functional or simply novel. The ROM will also allow for Bluetooth tethering, allowing you to browse the web on your watch, but once again we’re not sure if this would be very ideal. In any case if you’re interested in learning more about the ROM, or possibly downloading it and flashing it on your Galaxy Gear, hit up the XDA forums for the details.

So far the Galaxy Gear has not had much success when it comes to customers purchasing the device, although the idea of flashing a custom ROM does sound appealing, although we guess more developers out there need to get on board with the idea so that users will have more options to choose from.

Samsung boasts 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatch sales in two months

In an attempt to end speculation surrounding the popularity of its Galaxy Gear, Samsung has shared its smartwatch sales figures for the first time, and they might surprise you. Reuters reports that the company’s Android-powered wearable has sold 800,000 units since its launch in September, surpassing its own expectations and setting straight recent reports that pegged worldwide South Korean sales at 50,000 units.

To stimulate sales, Samsung has offered plenty of incentives to buy the Galaxy Gear by bundling it with the Galaxy Note 3, with some UK carriers offering the smartwatch for free if they purchased the 5.7-inch smartphone on a two-year contract. Samsung believes the Gear is now the “most sold wearable watch available in the marketplace,” which, if true, would put it ahead of efforts from Pebble and Sony. As the holidays approach, the company says it will offer more Galaxy Gear promotions as it builds out future support for more of its smartphones, adding to its recent software update that brought all of your notifications to the device.

Update: The Verge reports that while Reuters is noting consumer sales, Korean publication Yonhap believes Samsung may actually be reporting shipments to retailers. The same report also suggested Samsung’s 50,000 “worldwide” Gear sales were in South Korea only.

Galaxy Gear smartwatch hack lets you browse the web from your wrist

Galaxy Gear smartwatch hack lets you browse the web from your wrist

Acknowledged, a full web browser may not be the most useful thing to run on a 1.6-inch touchscreen, but that’s almost not the point here. What matters is that Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch now has its own custom ROM, courtesy of an XDA member called fOmey. The modded software side-steps a number of the manufacturer’s locks and limitations, letting the device run third-party apps, widgets, wallpapers and interfaces like Nova Launcher. Bluetooth tethering is enabled too, apparently allowing the watch to grab a web connection from any smartphone that supports the protocol. It’s hard to say for sure how smoothly it all runs, due to a lack of feedback from Gear owners so far (or perhaps a lack of Gear owners, period), but you’ll find full instructions at the source link if you want to give it a go.

Samsung Exec Likens Galaxy Gear To An Unripe Fruit

Samsung Exec Likens Galaxy Gear To An Unripe FruitWhen a company does not appear to be too confident about its products, how is a customer expected to feel, right? Well that’s pretty much the vibe that Samsung’s Open Innovation Center’s David Eun has managed to give off when he compared the Galaxy Gear smartwatch to that of an unripe fruit, or to be more specific, he compared it to a “small green tomato”. Fruit that is unripe tends to be sour and it’s something that most people would rather avoid, instead choosing to wait for it to ripen before eating or purchasing it.

In all fairness, Eun was probably trying to defend the Galaxy Gear by saying that the device had yet to ripen, or mature if you’d rather, and perhaps we might need some time before the product becomes a success. This is not the first time Samsung has gotten flack for something new that they’re trying. Back when the Galaxy Note was launched, its 5.3” display was considered ridiculous by many and many believed it was a novelty and a trend that would die down. Fast forward to 2013 and we can see that 21% of all smartphones shipped are of the “phablet” variety, a category of smartphones that Samsung had a hand in making.

Last we heard the Galaxy Gear had only managed 50,000 units sold to date and are only pushing 800-900 units sold a day, which is admittedly hardly inspiring. Perhaps time is what the industry and the market needs, but for now what do you guys think?

Samsung Has Only Managed To Muster 50,000 Galaxy Gear Sales To Date

Samsung Has Only Managed To Muster 50,000 Galaxy Gear Sales To DateBack in September, Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which was a way for the South Korea tech giant to capitalize on the fact that smartwatches appear to be trending these days. Unfortunately despite Samsung’s best intentions, recent reports have surfaced suggesting that the Galaxy Gear’s sales are anything but stellar. According to a post by BusinessKorea, it was said that the sales of the Galaxy Gear are “far below the initial expectations” that some had expected of the device.

In fact so far since its launch back in September, the Galaxy Gear has only managed to sell a total of 50,000 units, which in all honesty seems like a drop of water in the ocean especially compared to the millions of devices Samsung has managed to move in a week, let alone a few months. Apparently the Galaxy Gear is only selling anywhere between 800-900 units a day, which given Samsung’s presence in the world, is very low. We have heard how the Galaxy Gear has had a 30% return rate by unsatisfied customers, although we’re not sure if it’s either Samsung’s product is just not up to scratch, or if the world just isn’t ready for such devices yet. What do you guys think? A combination of both, perhaps?
