Galaxy Gear’s Basic Functions Already Compatible With Galaxy S4

When it unveiled the Galaxy Gear, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 earlier this month, Samsung said that its new smartwatch is currently only compatible with the new Note phablet and tablet. It said that support for Galaxy S4 and other devices will come after Android 4.3 update for them is released, which is expected to happen next month. However, it appears that the basic functions of Galaxy Gear are already functional with the Galaxy S4, regardless of the fact that the official update that is going to bring compatibility hasn’t been released yet.

A video has surfaced online which shows off the Galaxy Gear’s basic functions working fine with the Galaxy S4. The smartwatch connects to the smartphone without any problem. Basic functions such as changing clock theme, reminder alerts, picture transfer and control of music playing on the smartphone all work. However, at this point in time, app support only appears to be working with the Galaxy Note 3. Regardless, the new smartwatch already offers basic connectivity with the Galaxy S4 right now. Samsung has reportedly started testing the Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S4 and other devices, it is expected to release the update, which will bring Galaxy Gear compatibility in its entirety, next month.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear now on sale in the UK

    Image

If you’ve been looking to get your hands on Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear, boom, they’re here. The company has kicked off another of its world tours to announce availability of its 5.7-inch smartphone and new smartwatch in 58 countries. In the UK, an unlocked Galaxy Note 3 will set you back £649 but it’s also available on nearly all of the major carriers (we’re still waiting to hear from Three) — starting at around £30 on a traditional contract, or free if you decide to sign up to a new early-upgrader tariff. The Galaxy Gear retails at £299, but Samsung thinks you could use a £100 discount if you bundle it with an unlocked Galaxy Note 3, for a total cost of £848. Customers in the US, Canada and Japan, however, will have to wait ’til October — though pre-orders are already open.

Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch for Sprint: ships October 4th with ‘unlimited data for life’

Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch for Sprint ships October 4th with 'unlimited data for life'

As has become the norm, Sprint’s primary differentiator is its “unlimited data for life” policy affixed to new flagships. Granted, the carrier isn’t promising that the amount it charges for said data will remain the same for life, but at least you’ll have the option to pony up for it. Following the footsteps of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, Sprint has announced that its version of the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear watch will arrive on shelves October 4th. The former will cost $349.99 on a two-year contract (a full $50 more than most of its rivals), while the latter will go for $299.99 outright. Outside of being compatible with Sprint’s LTE airwaves and including a bit of carrier-branded bloatware, the handset itself will be the same one that we’ve previewed extensively.

AT&T To Take Galaxy Gear Pre-Orders On September 17th

AT&T To Take Galaxy Gear Pre Orders On September 17thSo, we have heard rumors going around that Samsung might very well begin work on a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch, but don’t you think that this would be a little bit premature? After all, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch has not been released worldwide just yet, and we have just gotten word that AT&T will allow you to place a pre-order for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch at 12:01AM ET tomorrow, which would happen to be September 17th.

The folks over at AT&T have not yet revealed any kind of pricing details as well as a release date for the smartwatch, but if one were to take a look at what Samsung did suggest in the past, the Galaxy Gear should arrive Stateside sometime in October with a recommended retail price of $299 a pop. Considering the pre-order timing, it would not be surprising to find out that the Galaxy Gear would arrive right after the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 hits store shelves. Would you want to pony up three Benjamins just to pick up a smartwatch that functions as some kind of minor extension to your smartphone? I think it really depends on the individual, but I guess you can say that this is more of a luxury than necessity at this point in time.

Samsung Rumored To Be Working On Galaxy Gear 2

Samsung Rumored To Be Working On Galaxy Gear 2It was only a couple of weeks ago that Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and we know that Samsung has plans for future Galaxy Gear variants, but is it too soon to start working on a new one? After all the device has yet to go up for sale, but word on the street has it that Samsung is already working on a successor to the Galaxy Gear that will essentially be a revamped version of the Galaxy Gear. In fact it seems that the reports believe that the revamped Galaxy Gear could even be launched in the first quarter of 2014! If that is true CES 2014 and MWC 2014 could be good places to launch it. Samsung Galaxy Gear To Receive Jewel Encrusted Accessories From Dana Lorenz

Samsung Galaxy Gear To Receive Jewel Encrusted Accessories From Dana LorenzSo, what do you think of the Samsung Galaxy Gear so far? We do know that it has already arrived at the FCC, and did spend some quality hands-on time with it, but how far will the smartwatch industry go is anybody’s guess. The Samsung Galaxy Gear might be the next big thing, or it could end up as a dud, but we will see how things pan out when it finally hits the market. Considering how the days where a particular device like your mobile phone or tablet is just another essential work tool is over, it is then not surprising to hear that designer Dana Lorenz intends to bling up the Samsung Galaxy Gear by churning out jewelry encrusted accessories for the smartwatch itself.

Among the accessories will include stuff such as metal charms that will hook up to the Galaxy Gear’s watch’s strap, while the Galaxy Note 3 too will be able to enjoy accessories such as leather cases that are adorned with gold studs and the ilk. Something tells me that designer accessories will not arrive cheap, and since the Galaxy Gear is not cheap to begin with, you might want to settle for a real designer watch instead and give the smartwatch bandwagon a miss. After all, designer watches might go up in value, and a smartwatch that becomes obsolete is not such a hot investment.

Snapchat Micro will bring disappearing messages to Samsung’s Galaxy Gear

    Image

There seems little doubt that much of the Galaxy Gear’s success or failure will hinge on the selection of apps that arrive on smartwatch. Samsung is making a strong push for third-party software (even in the face of limited device storage), courting a big cross section of developers at places like Path and eBay for its wearable. Popular messaging app Snapchat will also be hitting the device in the form of Snapchat Micro. As you’d expect, the app harnesses the Gear’s 1.9-megapixel camera to send self-destructing images. The company’s founder told Techcrunch, “Our team is constantly looking at ways to reduce the time between our experience of a moment and our ability to share it.” Walking around with a camera on your wrist is certainly one way to go about it.
