For Samsung, size does matter. The company has been one of the biggest pushers of large displays in the global smartphone market. It took a chance on the original Galaxy Note and found that it struck a chord with customers, since then the Galaxy Note series has been a cash cow for the company. Building up on its success, Samsung launched the Galaxy Mega lineup to offer a similar experience at a relatively low price. It appears that this particular lineup might have done well in the market too, which is why it is now being reported that the company is working on the next generation Galaxy Mega phones.

Samsung Galaxy Mega coming to MetroPCS on November 25th, for $399 at launch

Samsung’s other behemoth of a smartphone, the Galaxy Mega, is most definitely not one of the newest on the block. Still, we can’t imagine why MetroPCS users would complain about having yet another Android device to choose from. Starting November 25th, the carrier is making the 6.3-inch handset available on its network, complete with LTE support (where available) and a $399 price tag at launch. It’s worth mentioning that the MSRP is actually $499, but in the spirit of the holidays, MetroPCS is marking it at $100 less to kick things off — new customers, meanwhile, can get it for as low as $349. You’ll be able to snag one for yourself online or from the nearest brick-and-mortar store — if big, really big smartphones are your thing, that is.

IDC: Phablet Shipments Outnumber Tablets And Portable PCs

IDC: Phablet Shipments Outnumber Tablets And Portable PCs

From left to right: Mega 6.3, Mega 5.8, GS4

When Samsung first unveiled the first Galaxy Note back in IFA a couple of years ago, many thought that it was a novelty and a trend that would not persist. After all a device with such a big screen did not seem very practical since it was larger than a phone, but smaller than a tablet. Fast forward a few years and the phablet is definitely here to stay, and according to a recent report by IDC, it seems that phablets are not only here to stay, but they are a trend that appears to be on a meteoric rise.

The numbers revealed by the IDC has found that device manufacturers have shipped about 25.2 million phablets in the second quarter, which is definitely more when compared to tablets and portable PCs which shipped 12.6 million and 12.7 million respectively. Additional numbers have shown that phablet shipments were up by 100% quarter on quarter, and 620% year over year. Unsurprisingly Samsung appears to be dominating the phablet category and with the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 set to debut at IFA 2013, we can only expect the South Korean’s market share to grow.

What do you guys think? Do you agree that phablets are here to stay? Or do you think that devices like the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 are a little too big for your taste?

Samsung Galaxy Mega hitting AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular this month (updated)

Duck and cover — Samsung announced this morning that its latest monster handset, the Galaxy Mega, will be arriving on our shores this month. The 6.3-inch monolith will be coming to AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular. Beyond that, availability information is one thing about this phone that’s still on the small side — as the company explains in a press release this morning (which you can find in all of its PRy glory below), “each carrier will announce their specific availability, colors and timing.” We do know that it’ll have Android 4.2.2 and a 1.7GHz dual core processor. Expect more info on the only smartphone visible from space to follow soon from each of the aforementioned carriers.

Update: As expected, the carrier announcements have begun trickling in. You can find Sprint’s below. It adds…a little information to what we already knew, namely the fact that the Now Network will be offering up unlimited data with the handset.

Update 2: More info now from the AT&T camp, and this time out, it’s stuff we can really use — namely price and date. The carrier’s got the massive handset arriving the 23rd, priced at $150 (with, you guessed it, a two-year contract). The rest of that release is after the break — beneath all the other releases, naturally.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 And Mega 6.3 Arriving In Philippines Soon

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 And Mega 6.3 Arriving In Philippines SoonIf you are a huge fan of phablets, chances are pretty high that you would jive with the folks over at Samsung, especially with the runaway success that is the Galaxy Note 2, not to mention recent announcements made concerning the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3, where we managed to get our hands down and dirty with the latter recently. We also know that both devices have arrived at the FCC sometime late last month, supporting AT&T’s HSPA+ bands along the way. Well, it is nice to know that folks living in the Philippines will soon be able to grab hold of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3 this coming June 15th, although there is no word on pricing just yet, and as to which mobile carrier would be offering these devices.

Between the two, which would you fall for, and obviously a worldwide rollout should not be too far away, so folks living Stateside would do well to exercise just a bit more patience.
