Verizon Galaxy Nexus update fixes signal issues?

If you happen to be rocking to a Galaxy Nexus over on Verizon, are you one of those who did run into signal issues that did not allow you to stick to a 4G connection for more than just a handful of minutes before the connection dropped? That would be an extremely frustrating experience to say the least, and some folks actually went through not one, two, or three, but half a dozen replacement devices before the issue did not affect the handset. Having said this, is version I515.10 of the software on the device the culprit?

Best Buy thinks so, hoping that the software update which will be introduced to these devices in a couple of days’ time will fix this niggling issue. Having said that, do not get your hopes up that the upcoming update will be the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, but rather, an interim software fix that will hopefully squash the signal issue bug.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access

Verizon has never totally been on the Google Wallet bandwagon. First, Big Red refused to support the mobile payment system, citing a lack of secure hardware. Months later, folks managed to gain official access through the Play Store, but it looks like that the VZW GNex is, once again, Wallet-free. Word on the web has it that those Nexus owners are now, upon opening the app, greeted by a message saying that their version of Google Wallet is no longer supported, and that they need to update the app. Problem is, the Play Store is telling folks that their devices are no longer supported. We’ve confirmed the issue ourselves, but we don’t know if this a temporary problem, or if it’s a permanent move. We’ve reached out to both Google and Verizon for comment, and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.

[Thanks, Tim]

Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access

Verizon has never totally been on the Google Wallet bandwagon. First, Big Red refused to support the mobile payment system, citing its dependance upon proprietary hardware. Months later, some folks managed to gain access through the Play Store, but it looks like that the VZW GNex is, once again, Wallet-free. Word on the web has it that those Nexus owners are now, upon opening the app, greeted by a message saying that their version of Google Wallet is no longer supported, and that they need to update the app. Problem is, the Play Store is telling folks that their devices are no longer supported. Update: Verizon responded to our requests, but declined to add any new comment on the matter. Instead, VZW reiterated its previous statement that “Verizon doesn’t block applications. Google Wallet is different from other widely-available m-commerce services. Google Wallet does not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications. Instead, in order to work as architected by Google, Google Wallet needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones.”

Official: Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today (update: Nexus S 4G, too)

Official Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today

Well, well, would you look at that? Staying true to what we’d heard yesterday, it appears that long-awaited Android 4.1 refresh is finally making its way to Sprint’s own flavor of the Galaxy Nexus. As expected, the Jelly Bean update brings a slew of familiar, but rather marvelous features to the Now Network’s GNex, including Google Now, an improved notification and voice search system, offline dictation and, of course, a smoother UI that’s made possible by Mountain View’s now-famed Project Butter. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the Nexus S 4G, as the 4.1.x goods are still MIA for this device — however, we’ll be sure to let you know if that changes any time soon. In the meantime, those lucky Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners can eagerly “check now” for updates on their handset, and don’t forget to tell us how much you’re liking it so far.

Update: We’re receiving tips that Android 4.1 is now available to Nexus S 4G users, too. Word is that it’s a phased rollout, so check now and then check often. [Thanks, Jesse]

Sprint sending Jelly Bean to Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G tomorrow?

Sprint sending Jelly Bean to Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G tomorrow

We haven’t heard much from the Now Network about upgrading its handsets with some Jelly Bean goodness, but see that picture up there? That leaked screenshot says that Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint will be getting Android 4.1 on September 6th, which is tomorrow. So celebrate, Sprint customers — if accurate, that means that your Nexi will be the first stateside CDMA phones enjoying Mountain View’s latest buttery smooth mobile OS. Let’s just hope Big Red follows suit with a final release for its Nexus owners sometime soon.

Apple adds Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to ongoing patent lawsuit

The Apple v. Samsung patent war that will seemingly never end has taken another turn today, as Apple is asking the court to add newer Samsung Galaxy hardware, including the Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to its complaint against the Galaxy Nexus and other related devices. If you thought updated software and designs would keep these newer smartphones and tablets out of the fight — you were wrong. Just to help you keep things straight, remember this is a separate case from the one that ended exactly a week ago with a decision in Apple’s favor to the tune of more than $1 billion in damages.

At issue here are eight of Apple’s utility patents that it says Samsung has infringed upon. The headliner patents at issue are ‘721 which covers slide to unlock, and ‘604, which could apply to the universal search feature Samsung has been pulling from its phones recently. Another familiar entry is the ‘647 patent Apple slapped HTC with in 2010, which has a vague description but applies to clicking on a phone number in an email, for example, to call it. You can read the details on each and every one in the PDF linked below, we’ll be doing… anything else.

Jelly Bean for Verizon Galaxy Nexus available (pre-release)

Jelly BeanIf you happen to own a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon, there is a pre-release of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system update available at the moment, but you will need to do your fair bit of homework before you are able to get your Galaxy Nexus up and running with some Jelly Bean goodness. For starters, you will need to make a return to stock 4.0.4/IMM76K, followed by unlocking the device and installing a custom recovery (ClockworkMod or TWRP will do). Once done, just flash the IMM76Q package using custom recovery, followed by flashing the JRO03O update via the same route as well.

Bear in mind that this operating system update has not been certified by the folks over at Verizon Wireless, so you will need to unlock your bootloader beforehand as mentioned. As usual, it makes perfect sense to perform a backup of all your data beforehand lest something goes awry as you can never tell when Mr. Murphy is going to come knocking on your door.

Jelly Bean pre-release for Verizon Galaxy Nexus now available from Google

Jelly Bean prerelease for Verizon Galaxy Nexus now available from Google

More timid users might want to sit this one out, but for everyone else, you’ll be glad to know that a pre-release build of Android 4.1 is now available for installation on the Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. Many of you are likely aware that custom Android builds such as AOKP and CyanogenMod have provided an early taste of Jelly Bean for a while now, but this time around, the flashable zip files are available directly from Google — that’s right, this is pure AOSP. Specifically, users will be treated to build JRO03O, which is an incremental update over the previously released binaries. The caveat here is that the software has yet to receive certification from Verizon, and you’ll need to unlock your bootloader to join in the fun.

For experienced users who’ve already installed a custom recovery utility such as ClockworkMod Recovery, the process couldn’t be easier. Naturally, if you’re already on a custom build, you should perform a data wipe within the recovery utility, then install the IMM76Q package and then flash the JRO03O build on top of that. Regardless of your experience level, anyone with the proper motivation should be able to pull this one off. Those starting at square one will find a complete list of instructions at the source link below.

Your Google Nexus experience with Verizon and Sprint – hot or not?

Some folks feel that when it comes to the Google Nexus experience, both Verizon and Sprint are not the best of examples. After all, the Google Nexus range of smartphones were introduced so that developers are able to toy around with the most recent version of the Android operating system at all times, but it seems that both Sprint and Verizon are not dancing to this particular tune. To back up this particular sentiment with facts, did you know that both Verizon and Sprint have yet to roll out an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Nexus?

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was first announced in June before it was introduced early last month, introducing the update to GSM/HSPA+ devices. This placed both AT&T and T-Mobile customers first in line to enjoy the Jelly Bean experience on their Galaxy Nexus, but I guess the same cannot be said for Verizon and Sprint customers. Will this make you skip purchasing a Nexus handset from Verizon or Sprint in the future?
