Samsung Launches A Lightly Tweaked, LTE-Capable Galaxy Note 10.1 In Its Native Korea

Flawed though it may have been, I was a quite a fan of Samsung’s S Pen-friendly Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet — even with flashy new devices like the Note 2 on the market, I still think the whole concept just works best on a bigger screen. Samsung seems to be rather fond of the thing too, as it has just officially launched an LTE-capable version of the tab in its native Korea with a global launch slated for later in the year.

Access to LTE data speeds will be good enough for some, but the changelog doesn’t end there. The revamped Note 10.1 will also ship running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (fear not current Note 10.1 owners — your time will soon come) along with oft-touted features like the ability to draw quick commands and hover the S Pen over the screen for a quick view of calendar entries and folder contents.

Really though, one of the biggest draws of the support for Voice over LTE, which (as you’d imagine) in short routes your voice calls more efficiently over an LTE data network instead of falling back to a 3G GSM or CDMA network. As neat as the move is, the chances of the feature popping up in the forthcoming U.S. variant are pretty slim— the only carrier that currently supports Voice over LTE around these parts is MetroPCS (though that could all change now that a T-Mobile buyout is on the table). Given its lead in LTE network growth, it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Verizon Wireless is working on it too, but the carrier has had some trouble making things work properly — the service was originally set to debut this year but is now slated to rollout in late 2013.

A 10.1-inch tablet you can make calls on isn’t the fever-dream of an ironic hipster, but a real device you’ve been able to pick up since the summer. Now, Samsung is launching the promised LTE variant of of its Galaxy Note 10.1 in Korea. Aside from the new modem, the internals are unchanged, which means we should be able to snag a HM5100 and live out our Napoleon Solo fantasies in peace.

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 LTE to Hit Korean Market

Samsung Electronics announced on the 19th that Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE—the 4G version upgraded with new features—would be consecutively released via three major Korean mobile carriers. Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE simultaneously supports the voice call, video, and data transmission with the latest LTE technology such as VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and Multi Carrier, which is five times faster than the previous 3G technology. Equipped with a slew of new features, Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE runs on the latest Android …

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to be added into the Royal Collection

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is not just the tablet of choice for the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s also the preferred tablet for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond (re)Collection, a digital capsule that contains 60 images carefully selected by a panel of judges. The Diamond (re)Collection will be presented as a gift to the Queen later this year to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, which marks the 60th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and headship.

This also means that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 will be the first tablet to be added into the Royal Collection. The Royal Collection, as you know, is a precious art collection of the British Royal Family and it’s considered to be one of the largest and most important art collections in the world. Out of the 80,000 items submitted by over 35,000 people around the world, the Royal Photographic Society will pick 60 of the best entries which will be stored on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Now that is something.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update rolling out to Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 in Germany

If you own the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and you’re looking forward to the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, well you might be pleased to learn that according to reports, Samsung has begun rolling out the Jelly Bean update for the tablet. Now it seems that the update has begun rolling out in Germany as its first stop, which means that if you’re not living in Germany, chances are you might have to wait a while before it finally gets around to your region. It’s probably not what Galaxy Note 10.1 owners outside of Germany want to hear, but we guess it’s still good news to learn that the update has started rolling out, so we guess until then you’ll just have to be patient (it is a virtue after all, or at least that’s how the saying goes). For those living in Germany who have received the update, let us know in the comments below, or if you’re not from Germany but have received the update, let us know as well.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to replace the Brussels Philharmonic orchestra’s paper sheet music

Thanks to electronic devices like e-readers and tablets, buying physical copies of books and magazines are no longer our only option. Going digital means that publishers will spend less money printing, which in turn cuts down the amount of paper which could help sustain the environment, so we guess it’s not surprising to see tablets starting to replace other paper products, such as sheet music for example. Musicians relying on their smartphones or tablets to read music certainly isn’t new, but it looks like the Brussels Philharmonic will be the first orchestra in the world to replace paper sheet music with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Apple Looks To Add Jelly Bean, Galaxy Note 10.1 To Existing Samsung Lawsuit

main_visual

Apple is hoping to add Samsung’s latest tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to a list of product it claims infringe its patents in an existing court case in California, Bloomberg reports. The arguments supporting these additions were made in federal court in San Jose today, and follow Samsung’s expressed intent to add the iPhone 5 its own infringement claims in the same proceedings.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is Samsung’s latest self-branded tablet, though the manufacturer has been tapped to provide hardware for Google’s Nexus 10 slate as well. The Jelly Been update is the version of Google’s Android OS that powers the Note, thus its inclusion in this suit, which is slated currently for a 2014 trial date.

Obviously we’re not looking at a draw down situation here, as both sides in the case seem eager to make sure device lists are updated to include the latest from each side. Apple won a preliminary order in this case blocking the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the U.S., and added the Galaxy S III to the list of products it says are infringing its IP in August. In October, Judge Lucy Koh rescinded a previous injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, an earlier 10-inch tablet from Samsung, in a separate proceeding in the same court.

For any action resulting from these proceedings to have teeth, they really need to apply to current products, and given that the trial date isn’t for over a year yet, expect to see more devices named by both parties in the interim as additional hardware is released.

Nexus 10 vs. the competition: fight!

Nexus 10 vs the competition fight!

Google undoubtedly upset the tablet market almost overnight with the Nexus 10: that record-setting 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, Exynos 5 Dual, Android 4.2 and all-important $399 starting price just tilted price-performance balance in a different direction than we’d seen even a week ago. But how does it stack up against its competition? We’ve included full details of the devices in a chart after the break; initial appearances suggest that pure performance hounds may like the Nexus 10 the most, although it doesn’t have the most diverse options for cellular data or storage. We’ll know the real tale of the tape once the Nexus 10 reaches our hands.

Samsung asks us to witness ‘The Next Big Thing’ at an October 24th event in New York City

Samsung sends invitations to 'The Next Big Thing' on October 24th in New York City

We’re starting to suspect that Samsung has a thing for special events. The company just asked us to clear our calendars for an evening presentation in New York City on October 24th, teasing that the “Next Big Thing” has arrived. It’s easy to make the connection to the Galaxy Note line with a stylus front and center in the teaser, although just what’s entailed is left to the imagination: is it a more formal launch for American Galaxy Note II variants? A new tablet beyond the Galaxy Note 10.1? All we know is that we plan to be there to find out.
