Apple adds Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to ongoing patent lawsuit

The Apple v. Samsung patent war that will seemingly never end has taken another turn today, as Apple is asking the court to add newer Samsung Galaxy hardware, including the Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to its complaint against the Galaxy Nexus and other related devices. If you thought updated software and designs would keep these newer smartphones and tablets out of the fight — you were wrong. Just to help you keep things straight, remember this is a separate case from the one that ended exactly a week ago with a decision in Apple’s favor to the tune of more than $1 billion in damages.

At issue here are eight of Apple’s utility patents that it says Samsung has infringed upon. The headliner patents at issue are ‘721 which covers slide to unlock, and ‘604, which could apply to the universal search feature Samsung has been pulling from its phones recently. Another familiar entry is the ‘647 patent Apple slapped HTC with in 2010, which has a vague description but applies to clicking on a phone number in an email, for example, to call it. You can read the details on each and every one in the PDF linked below, we’ll be doing… anything else.

Visualized: Samsung’s human, Galaxy Note-powered taxi

Visualized Samsung's human, Galaxy Notepowered taxi

That’s the last time we take a taxi in Berlin. After a fairly harrowing journey across the city to tonight’s Samsung IFA event, we reached our destination and spotted a clearly superior mode of transportation: a fleet of pedal-powered cabs sporting Galaxy Note 10.1s in the back. Of course, we probably would have spent more time admiring the glory that is Berlin, rather than the 10-inch screen, but it’s nice tp have the option there when we need it.

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 10.1 ‘very soon’

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 101 'very soon'

It’s not as specific as we’re guessing some would like, but Samsung confirmed during its IFA 2012 keynote today that a Jelly Bean update is coming to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 “very soon.” That is at least a bit more encouraging than the “later this year” that we last heard for the Note 10.1, and follows a leak of an official GS3 Jelly Bean build earlier this month. The original Galaxy Note wasn’t specifically mentioned on stage, but it did make an appearance on the company’s Jelly Bean slide, so we’d assume an update for it is coming as well, if not necessarily “very soon.”

Samsung Galaxy Note II vs Galaxy Note I: Specifications War

At IFA 2012 we’ve gotten our first glimpse of the next phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note II – now it’s time to compare to the original from one year ago to see what’s been improved. First you’ll notice that the casing for the device has taken on a whole lot more “Galaxy S III” styling, just as the original Note did with the Galaxy S II. The back and front are more than likely going to feature different color combinations even beyond the blue and white we’ve seen thus far.

With this new Galaxy Note II you’ll be working with a display that’s 5.5-inches rather than 5.3-inches but the amount of pixels has gone down (from 1,280 x 800 pixels (285ppi) down to 1,280 x 720 pixels (267ppi)). That’s perfectly OK though since the display technology has changed as well – you’ll be working with HD Super AMOLED rather than Super AMOLED Plus. The chassis have obviously changed also, now 5.95 x 3.16 x 0.37 inches (151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4mm) rather than the slightly fatter and shorter 5.78 x 3.27 x 0.38 inches (146.9 x 83 x 9.7 mm) of the Note 1.

This new iteration of the Galaxy Note has a microSD card slot that can carry up to a 64GB card while the original only had the ability to work with 32GB. The new version also has three device iterations based on internal memory: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The rear-facing camera stays the same quality as far as numbers go with 8 megapixels and the ability to capture 1080p video, but the front-facing camera has been changed from 2 megapixels down to 1.9 megapixels.

For a bit more explanation on why some of these odd changes were made, have a peek at our Samsung Galaxy Note 2 hands-on post.

Above: Galaxy S III vs Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Note II

The new Galaxy Note II has NFC in all variations from start to finish, and you’ll be working with Bluetooth 4.0 rather than 3.0 which the old model came packed with. The Galaxy Note II comes with 2GB of RAM rather than 1, and its Exynos processor is a 1.6GHz quad-core SoC rather than dual-core. Finally you’ll be working with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box while the original Note was just updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich several weeks ago.

Have a peek at our Galaxy Note II timeline below to learn more and, again, check out our hands-on with the device via the link above. Also be sure to check out the rest of our IFA 2012 coverage to stay up to date on all things pushed in Berlin!

Samsung Galaxy Note II getting redesigned S Pen with rubber tip, improved grip

Samsung Galaxy Note II getting redesigned S Pen with rubber tip, improved grip, same 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity

Today at its IFA 2012 press conference, Samsung confirmed that the newly announced Galaxy Note II will make use of a new, redesigned S Pen. In addition to boasting an improved 8mm grip, it has a rubber tip. It also recognizes 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is already true of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Other than that, Samsung hasn’t shared much in the way of specifics, but if you’d like to see video of the new Note in action, we can at least offer that.

Live from Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2012!

Judging from the rows and rows of Samsung flag lining the outside the Messe Berlin, the company’s planning another big show for this year’s IFA. This time last year, the company took the wraps off of its industry-shaping Galaxy Note, and if all goes according to plan, there’s seems a fairly significant chance that 2012 will see a sequel. And, knowing Samsung, that’s not all we’re in store for today. Hold on tight and join us after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to the US ‘later in 2012’

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 coming to the US later in 2012

If you’re waiting for the US release date for Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, we’re sorry to say that you won’t find one today. While this version of the form-defining phablet is destined for European, Asian and Middle Eastern-markets, the company promises a version of the device will hit American shores before the end of 2012, as you can see in the quote we’ve got from the company below.

“Samsung Mobile is planning a U.S. version of Galaxy Note II, which will be available later in 2012. Building on the success of the original Galaxy Note, we’re confident that the Galaxy Note II continues to redefine what consumers should expect from their smartphone and delivers a powerful, innovative and unique experience. Exact timing and retail channel availability is not being announced at this time, we will continue to share information as it becomes available.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: hands-on with the new S Pen-toting phablet (video)

Samsung Galaxy Note II handson video

Samsung’s got a handful of announcements to offer its mobile fans at IFA this year, and it’s started big: with the Galaxy Note II. The new Android device packs a larger 5.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 16:9 screen, but still falls roughly within the same generous footprint of its predecessor. A year on, we’ve now got a more powerful SoC, up from a dual-core 1.4GHz processor to a new quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos chipset (yes, that’s even faster than the one found in the Galaxy S III) and Android Jelly Bean right out of the box. Samsung’s putting a lot of focus on making the most of all that screen space and S Pen functionality. We got our hands (both of them) on the Galaxy Note II just a few hours early, so after the gallery, skip past the break for our first impressions.

Oops! Galaxy Note II Gets Detailed Ahead Of Samsung’s Official Announcement

galnote2

With Sony’s big IFA press conference out of the way, Samsung is next in line to show off its new (and oft-rumored) wares. That said, it looks like one of the company’s most anticipated products has gotten its share of spotlight ahead of schedule — PocketNow has come into possession of some Galaxy Note II press images, and some technical details to go with them.

First up, the rumors about the screen appear to be true — the new Note indeed sports a 5.5-inch display that runs at 720p, which is a bit of a bummer since the original had a higher resolution (1280×800) panel and higher pixel density to boot. C’est la vie, I suppose. That said, the new model is just a hair thinner than the original, but has put on an extra 2 grams in comparison.

Inside the little behemoth is a 1.6 GHz quad-core chipset of unspecified make (PocketNow thinks its an Exynos, I don’t see how it couldn’t be), and 2GB of RAM. A quick look around the back reveals a standard 8-megapixel camera, while a 1.9-megapixel counterpart sits just to the right of the front speaker. All of those components could make for some sketchy battery life, but the Note II crams a whopping 3,100mAh hour battery into its svelte frame to make sure users can doodle into the wee hours of the morning. Expect to hear about 16, 32, and 64GB variants during the official announcement, as well as LTE-enabled models for certain markets.

In fairness, these sorts of last minute leaks are nothing new for Samsung — half-decent photos and a full spec listing for the Galaxy Nexus appeared online just a half hour before the device was officially unveiled in Hong Kong — but it does put a bit of a damper on Samsung’s show. With any luck, the Korean electronics giant will pull something crazy (like an Android-powered camera) out of its hat to keep us on our toes.

Leaked Specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Show an Even More Gigantic Screen [Samsung]

If you were one of the weirdos who looked at the original Galaxy Note and thought, “Oh man, I would totally buy the shit out of that huge phone if it was more huger”, you’re in luck: leaked specs of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 2 show a 5.5″ screen. That’s .2 of an inch bigger than small fry original Galaxy Note! More »
