Galaxy Note 2 photo shows up over at Samsung’s Facebook page, could be real or fake

Before anything else, I’d like to advise you to take this report with the finest grain of salt that you can find. Whether it’s real or fake, the photo that you are seeing above was taken from the official Facebook page of Samsung Pakistan. Now the photo has been around since February and it has even been used as a reference to the then-unknown Galaxy S3. When the photo was published earlier today via Samsung Pakistan, many speculated that this could indeed be the next-generation Galaxy Note that is expected to be launched this month in Berlin.

Although the photo has now been removed, it’s interesting to see that it doesn’t have a home button and a bezel. This could be photoshopped, but it somewhat supports our previous report that Samsung could release a bezel-less Android phone soon. Even more interesting will be the possibility that the Galaxy Note 2 could feature a flexible AMOLED display. Anyway, while writing this post, Samsung Pakistan now confirms that the photo was a mistake. It turns out that a moderator of theirs picked up the wrong image from Google. We still have a few more weeks to go before Samsung will finally make it official. For now, imaginations are flying high.

Galaxy Note II flexible display tipped (but don’t expect a bendy phablet)

The Galaxy Note II is expected to be announced at the end of the month ahead of IFA 2012, but there’s always time for some last minute details. According to a report from the Korea IT Times, Samsung will make use of an 5.5-inch AMOLED panel in the Galaxy Note II featuring unbreakable plane display technology along with a plastic substrate. That will allow the South Korean manufacturer to reduce the thickness of the phone, possibly leaving room for a larger battery.

That won’t mean that the phone will be flexible, however, just that the use of plastic substrate will allow the display to be curved while being stronger and more resilient than the typical glass that is used for smartphones. UBP tech will make the screen 0.4mm thinner overall: that doesn’t sound like much, but space is at a premium in a smartphone, so every little bit counts. It could also help to increase battery capacity for the Note II, or make room for additional components within the handset.

It’s not the first time the Note II has been rumored to use an unbreakable plane display. MK Business News first reported in June that the technology would make the jump to Samsung’s Note successor, although DDaily later contradicted those reports, saying that the technology wouldn’t be used this time around.

Other reports suggest the Note II will feature a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with a 1280×720 resolution, a change in resolution and aspect ratio from the original Note. The design of the device is reportedly tweaked to fall in line with the Galaxy S III aesthetic, with the handset also featuring a quad-core Exynos processor and an improved camera with a megapixel count somewhere between 8 and 12. The Note II is expected to be announced at a Samsung event on August 29th, and we’ll be there to cover the event.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 announced

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is one of the tablets that intend to push Apple’s iPad to the very brink, but then again, you can say that Samsung is not too successful in this matter as the iPad is nigh untouchable where tablet sales figures are concerned, just like how the iPod decimated all the other portable media players out there in the market previously no matter what the competitor did. The thing is, hardware is not the entire equation, there needs to be decent software and enough killer apps in the ecosystem to keep a particular device going strong, not to mention having a fantastic ‘cool’ image to go along with it.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 certainly has its fair share of ‘coolness’ by virtue of it being an Android-powered tablet, and hopefully it will be able to provide an even better competition to the iPad compared to its brethren. This extension of the Galaxy Note category will come outfitted with the functionality and precision of a pen and paper on a 10.1-inch large display, opening up the door to potentially endless possibilities while elevating your creativity, productivity and learning abilities.

It will boast of an intuitive user experience and thanks to its 1.4GHz quad-core processor which can be found on the Samsung Galaxy S3 as well, in addition to 2GB of RAM for enhanced performance, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 will certainly not come up wanting on the hardware front. Some of the key intuitive features and capabilities incorporated into the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 include side-by-side multitasking, where Samsung’s unique ‘S Pen’ experiences will include a range of ‘S Note templates’ and productive tools, ranging from Shape Match and Formula Match to Learning Hub for accessing educational curricula (Learning Hub is currently available in Korea, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, China and Singapore, and will gradually roll-out to other global markets) and Adobe’s premium creative application Photoshop Touch.

It also boasts of a Multiscreen feature that lets you effortlessly utilize a couple of different applications side-by-side simultaneously, paving the way for true and easy multitasking. You are able to check out Web pages or videos, or even launch other applications when you are writing the next novel or sketching ideas with the S Pen. Feel free to capture and crop images, and paste them onto the other screen in order to churn out your very own personal notes, now how about that?

There is a 5-megapixel camera at the back alongside a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls and self-portrait purposes. Three models are available – a WiFi-only version, a WiFi-and-3G HSPA-Plus connectivity version at launch, and a WiFi-and-LTE version that will be rolling out later this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE version coming your way

Yes, we do know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was announced officially earlier this morning, where it intends to go up against the new iPad with its fair share of high powered specifications such as a rather beefy 1.4GHz quad-core processor that gets the job done, 2GB RAM within, a 5-megapixel camera that helps you shoot great looking photos, while a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera is right there for you to perform video calls. I guess the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is pretty much similar to the Galaxy S3 in some ways, especially when you consider that it will be able to track your eyes when you look at the display, except that this is not a smartphone.

We do know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 will also come in three versions – the customary WiFi-only version, while those who want more flexibility will be able to enjoy a WiFi-and-3G HSPA-Plus connectivity model at launch. Those who are even more patient can wait until later this year, where there will be a WiFi-and-LTE version. A global roll out will happen this August, although those living in South Korea, Germany, the US and the UK will get the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 first. [Press Release]

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates headed for Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2

Jelly BeanGoogle’s latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is said to make its way towards the Samsung Galaxy S3 sometime in the third quarter of this year, and there are also whispers in the street that this particular operating system update will also be on its way to appear on the Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2 (which was recently announced officially). Right now, the Galaxy S3 undergoing the testing phase for its firmware, and a public version of the first Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3 is in the pipeline.

Other than that, it is said that Samsung is testing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S2, and initial tests do look just fine. It makes perfect sense though to release Jelly Bean for this particular smartphone, especially when it is still doing extremely well in terms of sales. The Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Note, too, (sorry I could not resist that bit), will also be part of this Jelly Bean update throng, although we do not have anything official from Samsung just yet.

Samsung’s smartphone Jelly Bean update plans detailed

The question on every smartphone owners lips when a new version of Android is released is always, “When is my device going to get it?” Manufacturers are often cautious in giving out exact timelines as phones and tablets need to be extensively tested before updates can be approved and rolled out. Sam Mobile has some information regarding Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, and the Galaxy Note, with Samsung seemingly busy behind the scenes testing each device.

According to Sam Mobile, test Jelly Bean firmwares for the Galaxy S III have passed the necessary tests, with Samsung currently working on a public version of the update. At this point Samsung is simply trying to finish the Jelly Bean update before getting the final approval from Google to release it out into the wild.

The Galaxy S II, meanwhile, is still being tested for compatibility with Jelly Bean. The initial tests are apparently “looking fine,” and Samsung is more than likely moving ahead with the update thanks to the strong sales of the Galaxy S II and large installed customer base. Sam Mobile adds that if Samsung decides not to update the device to Jelly Bean, owners will receive a “Value Pack”, not unlike what happened with the Galaxy S and Ice Cream Sandwich. The situation is said to be the same with the Galaxy Note.

As for when you can expect the updates to roll out, the Galaxy S III should see the Jelly Bean upgrade at the end of the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth. The Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note will see updates during the fourth quarter, assuming Samsung gives the devices the go ahead. And what about the rumored Galaxy Note II? Sam Mobile has heard from a source that the device is still being tested on Ice Cream Sandwich, and that it’s unclear if the device will launch with ICS or Jelly Bean. If it does land with just Android 4.0, then a 4.1 update will be available a few months later in Q4.

HTC tipped to launch 5″ device with 1080p display

Samsung released the international version of the Galaxy Note in November 2011, and not long afterwards LG announced its intentions to release its own 5-inch smartphone. Recent reports have indicated that the Galaxy Note II will make an appearance at a Samsung event on August 29th, and it looks like HTC isn’t content with being left out of the large smartphone game. DigiTimes reports that the company is planning to release a 5-inch device of its own that will trounce the competition with a 1080p display.

According to sources speaking to DigiTimes, HTC plans on releasing the device sometime in September or October, putting it up against the likes of the Galaxy Note II and the next iPhone, if current release date rumors are to be believed. The resolution of the device is listed as 1794×1080: the panel will most likely be 1920×1080, while 126 pixels are used for the onscreen Android keys found on Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

Little is known about the device, although DigiTimes does go on to say that the surprisingly large sales of the Galaxy Note has prompted other companies to take a second look at the form factor. Back in June, Samsung claimed it had sold more than 7 million Galaxy Notes worldwide, impressive for a device that was at first dismissed. LG’s Optimus Vu has been been available in South Korea for several months now, featuring a 5-inch 1024×768 screen, but the company hasn’t released any sales numbers for the device.

Specs for HTC’s mystery 5-inch device aren’t known, although benchmarks leaked in July indicate that the company is working on a device with a 1080p screen matched with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip. The device certainly didn’t lack in horsepower either, doubling the score of the HTC One X while also beating the Samsung Galaxy S III by a healthy margin. BGR also reported back in April that an HTC device with a 5-inch 1080p display would land on Verizon sometime in the Fall.
