Samsung Has A 5.8″ Android Smartphone In The Works [Rumor]

galaxy player 640x403 Samsung Has A 5.8 Android Smartphone In The Works [Rumor]We know that Samsung has a thing for smartphones with ginormous displays – think the original Galaxy Note which has since grown in size with the Galaxy Note 2. However according to the folks at SamMobile, they are claiming that thanks to their sources, Samsung might have plans to announce an Android smartphone with a whopping 5.8” display! To be fair such a device by Samsung already exists although it is only available in Korea and is known as the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 (pictured above). Based on that name, we guess you probably already figured out that it is a media player rather than a smartphone, but things might change soon with this alleged 5.8” device which has the model number GT-I9512.

Not much is known about the device in terms of hardware, but SamMobile claims that it will feature dual-SIM capabilities and will be available in pure white and should run Android 4.1.2/4.2.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. We’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but with MWC 2013 taking place at the end of February, we expect Samsung will be there to announce their new products and maybe this alleged 5.8” Android smartphone will be part of their announcement.

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 officially revealed

A while back there were alleged leaked photos of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Those photos resembled the Galaxy S3 quite a bit and unfortunately could not be confirmed. While it remains to be seen if the Galaxy Note 2 will resemble the Galaxy S3, what we do know now is that Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Player 5.8, which in accordance to earlier rumors, is sporting a massive 5.8” display. Unfortunately not all of the hardware specs were revealed in the press release, but some of the specs confirmed includes  the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8’s 16/32GB storage options, a VGA front-facing camera, a 2,500mAh battery, a microSD card slot and will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Pricing and availability have yet to be revealed, but we assume that those details will be shared with us at IFA which will be taking place later this week, so if this is a device you wouldn’t mind getting your hands on, check back with us then for the details! Samsung unveils Galaxy Player 58, pockets everywhere brace for impact

We hope you wear baggy pants, because you’re going to want big pockets to carry Samsung’s giant new jukebox. The Galaxy Player 5.8 is dominated by its namesake 5.8-inch, 960 x 540 LCD — a screen that makes the 4.8-inch AMOLED on the closely related Galaxy S III look downright modest by comparison. Android 4.0 and the latest generation of TouchWiz make their first appearances in a Samsung media player here, with the spin naturally on books and movies instead of the tasks you’d associate with a smartphone. You’re otherwise looking at the kind of media player you’d expect in 2012: there’s either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot, a front VGA camera for those face-to-face sessions and a huge 2,500mAh battery to compensate for the display. We’re still waiting on a few details, such as the exact processor and the Galaxy Player 5.8’s launch schedule, although the announcement’s timing suggests we may get a peek at this behemoth when IFA 2012 kicks off later this week. In the meantime, we’d advise against buying a pair of skinny jeans.
