Samsung will update US Galaxy S III devices to Jelly Bean ‘in the coming months’

Samsung commits to rolling out Jelly Bean to USbased Galaxy S III devices in the 'coming months'

The about screen on your US Samsung Galaxy S III may look a lot like the one above in the near future (albeit in English). Samsung has officially announced its intention to make an upgrade to Jelly Bean available to stateside versions of the company’s flagship, though it left out one very important detail: the actual date. Instead, all we know at this point is that an upgrade to Android 4.1 will be offered OTA and via Kies sometime in the coming months. Why so vague? It’s likely because Samsung is now at the mercy of each individual carrier to finish testing the new version of Android on the GS3 before unleashing it to the public. The refresh will deliver some TouchWiz-based enhancements like Blocking Mode, Easy Mode and a few new camera settings, as well as the usual suite of Jelly Bean improvements like Google Now and expandable notifications. Head below to check out the press release, which offers a more detailed list of what to expect.

iPhone 5 overtakes Galaxy S III in mobile web traffic

Apple’s iPhone 5 has been out for only a few weeks, while Samsung’s Galaxy S III has been available for months now. Mobile advertising network and research firm Chitika has said that mobile web traffic on the iPhone 5 has already surpassed web traffic on the Galaxy S III by 12 percentage points.

Chitika conducted an analysis on millions of mobile ad impressions on the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S III, which spanned a 7-day period from October 3 to October 9. Obviously, the iPhone 5 was only a couple weeks old at the time, but after the week-long study, Chitika found that out of all the web traffic coming from these two devices, the iPhone 5 claimed 56% of it.

That’s a pretty amazing statistic for a phone that’s only three weeks old, releasing just last month on September 22. The Galaxy S III was released on May 29, which was more than four months ago. However, this doesn’t mean that Galaxy S III sales are doing poorly, and I’m sure Samsung is very happy with the way the device is moving.

Then again, these statistics are showing that iPhone users are the most active when it comes to the mobile web, and Chitika argues that web developers are targeting the iPhone 5 first when it comes to optimizing online content for mobile consumption. However, the Galaxy S III and other Android devices obviously aren’t being ignored.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini pops up, we go hands-on (video)

STUB Samsung Galaxy S III mini hands on born in Frankfurt

When word first started trickling out that Samsung planned to make a mini version of the Galaxy S III, it had the air of plausibility — we’ve heard from many a person about the too-large size of that phone for their hands. Then, a press invitation confirmed that “something small” was in the works, and finally mobile chief JK Shin confirmed that a smartphone of that name would be announced today in Frankfurt, Germany.

Now Samsung’s spilled all the beans, and revealed the new Galaxy S III mini, a slightly paler version of its bigger brother in specs as well as screen size. Our own short time with the phone certainly revealed that its pushing all the same “inspired by nature” buttons of the original Galaxy S III (and the Galaxy Note II), with the same exact rounded pebble shape and layout. The German marketing rep we spoke to said his company’s research found that users wanted the same phone design as the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III, but in a smaller form factor — to more easily fit smaller hands and pockets. Samsung said those folks don’t necessarily need or want the most powerful phone they can get their hands on and are content to have mid-level specs — so the mini carries a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 4-inch, WVGA AMOLED screen and 32GB max of memory.

It remains to be seen if those specs will dilute the Galaxy S brand, but in any event, we found the phone certainly doesn’t cramp our regular-sized hands like its older brother can (let alone the Note II), and the comfortable shape of the original works even better in a mini size. The button placement is identical to the larger handset, and the phone will come out of the box with nearly identical Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean functionality — with the added Samsung TouchWiz twist, of course. That includes new niceties like the multi-screen option, and a brief play with the phone shows the same butter factor, even with the lesser dual-core processor. So might this mini-me Galaxy S III model sway you over to the Samsung Galaxy family if you disdain the giant screen of its predecessor? Check out the gallery below to see how the size compares with the rest of the family, and a hands-on video and interview with Samsung Germany rep Mario Winter, both after the break.

Samsung announces Galaxy S III mini: 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core CPU, NFC

Samsung announces Galaxy S III mini: 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core CPU, NFC

Samsung has just announced the Galaxy S III mini, a 4-inch David version of its Goliath big brother — will it be worthy of its name? The rumor mill churned out that it might be a dumbed down version, but an oblique comment by mobile head JK Shin suggests otherwise — either way, we’re on the scene in Frankfurt, Germany to give you the long (and short) of it. According to the spec sheet we just received, this Android 4.1 phone features a dual-core 1GHz chip (which is good news for the 1,500mAh battery), 1GB RAM, 8 or 16GB of internal storage plus an extra 32GB maximum via microSD. The 4-inch Super AMOLED screen comes with a WVGA resolution, while the main camera takes five-megapixel photos plus 720p video, and there’s a VGA front-facing camera as well for fans of video chats. There’s obviously the usual bundle of radios as well, including 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, GPS, GLONASS, FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) and even NFC, but for now, this 111.5-gram TouchWiz device will only support HSPA 900/1900/2100 networks along with EDGE 850/900/1800/1900.

Update: Our hands-on with the phone is live!

Samsung’s Galaxy S III Mini Might Have Shrunken Specs, Too [Galaxy S Iii Mini]

When Samsung confirmed that its 4-inch Galaxy S III mini was real, it promised that it wouldn’t just be another horrible tiny budget phone. But if MobileGeeks’ information about the handset is correct, we may be in for a letdown tomorrow. More »

Samsung Targets Europe With Smaller Flagship Phone: Galaxy S III Mini To Pack iPhone 5-Sized Screen

galaxys3

Samsung will unveil a smaller version of its flagship Galaxy SIII handset in Europe tomorrow – shrinking the screen from the 4.8 inches of its current flagship to an iPhone 5-sized 4 inches. Reuters is reporting the handset will be launched in Europe. There’s no word yet on whether Samsung plans to bring the device to the U.S.

The only other confirmed detail at this point is the name of the phone: the Galaxy S III mini. Samsung provided TechCrunch with the following statement confirming the planned launched

GALAXY S III mini will come with 4″ display and we are going to unveil the product tomorrow (Oct 11th). – JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications

We’ve asked Samsung for more details about the phone and will update with any response.

Engadget has some leaked info on the device (via a German site called MobileGeeks) which suggests the S III mini may be rather more mid-range than flagship — with an expected price of 399 euros ($510). While it will apparently have a 4 inch Super AMOLED display, the resolution will only be 800 x 480 (which would give a lowly pixel per inch rate of 233). The site also reckons Samsung is replacing the S III’s quad-core Exynos processor with an STE U8420 chip clocked at 1GHz. RAM is 1GHz, while the rear camera is reportedly 5 megapixels.

Reuters’ story quotes a Samsung spokeswoman citing Shin saying: “We think there’s strong demand for 4-inch screen models in Europe.” The company also told the news agency that the Galaxy S III mini would not be an entry-level model — contrary to the leaked info from MobileGeeks.

Early last month Saumsung released sales figures for the Galaxy S III – saying it had sold over 20 million units in the first 100 days of launch: 6 million in Europe, 4.5 million in Asia (ex. Korea), 4 million in North America and 2.5  million in Korea. The company is clearly hoping to maximise the reach of the device by adding a smaller version to appeal to people with smaller hands (and pockets).

Samsung is also not the only mobile maker to be thinking (a little bit) smaller when it comes to smartphone screen sizes. Motorola’s recent Droid Razr M packs a 4.3 inch screen — putting in the same ballpark as the iPhone, albeit still a smidge bigger. Perhaps the rampant screen inflation we’ve seen in the smartphone market in recent years has just about run its course (let’s hope so).

The Galaxy S III is just one of scores of phones in Samsung’s portfolio — which run the gamut from kid-friendly devices with very small and cramped screens all the way up to ‘phablet’ devices, its Galaxy Note range, with can pack screens in excess of 5 inches.

Offering an extensive range of different screen sizes (and price points) has been one of the ways Samsung has differentiated its Android-powered smartphones from other Android-based devices, such as HTC’s. It’s also a counterpoint to Apple’s strategy of offering just a handful of iPhone models with only very limited choice in screen size (and price).

Samsung Launching New Four-Inch Galaxy S III Mini Tomorrow [Galaxy S Iii Mini]

Samsung has confirmed that it will unveil a new, smaller Galaxy SIII on October 11th. The new phone won’t be a budget version, but rather a (slightly) scaled-down device, with a four-inch screen for those who prefer a more pocketable handset. More »
