iPhone 5 VS Samsung Galaxy S3 VS Galaxy S4 In “Torture” Test

With the competition between Apple and Samsung being extremely fierce, not just in terms of products, but in the courtrooms as well, we expect that many are wondering just how well the Samsung Galaxy S4 holds up against Apple’s flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5. Given that they both run different operating systems and therefore cater to different types of users and different needs, we guess one way to compare the smartphones would in terms of durability. Is the iPhone 5 more durable than the Samsung Galaxy S4? Well that’s what the folks at insurance firm, SquareTrade, decided to find out.

Basically SquareTrade pitted several devices against each other, namely the iPhone 5 versus the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3. The phones were put through several tests, such as being dropped, skidded across a table, and dunked underwater. The tests were designed to roughly simulate the typical accidents that one might encounter in the real life with their smartphones. Either way if you have a couple of minutes to spare and would like to see all three phones being put through their paces, check it out in the video above. Alternatively if you’d like to see which phone might be better for you in terms of hardware, performance, and software, you can check out our reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5 to learn more.

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Gets Multi-View Update

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Gets Multi View UpdateIt was at the end of last year that we speculated the Samsung Galaxy S3 (which will soon be dethroned by its successor from the flagship position) might be on the receiving end of a Multi-View update, but that speculation came to nought – at least until now. For those who happen to own the Samsung Galaxy S3 with Sprint as your mobile carrier of choice, you might want to take note that an update has already been made available for your smartphone via OTA (Over The Air), and Multi-View would be one of the new features you will be able to enjoy after applying the update.

What does Multi-View bring to the picture? Well, this particular app would enable you to split the display on the Galaxy S3 in half, allowing two different apps to run simultaneously, making it a haven for multitaskers. Of course, it does help that the screen of the Galaxy S3 is generous, although larger phablets like the Galaxy Note 2 would benefit even more from Multi-View. Other features that arrive with this OTA update include Paper Artist, camera enhancements, and an improved ability to send bulk SMS messages.

Samsung Galaxy S3 In Amethyst Purple On Sprint Arrives

Samsung Galaxy S3 In Amethyst Purple On Sprint ArrivesLet us assume for a while that you have always wanted to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S3 for yourself, but somehow or rather, you never really got around doing so simply because the smartphone did not come in the color that you love. Well, we all know that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is already well on its way to be released in the mass market, but for some of us who figure out that it is all right to just use a smartphone that is one “generation” behind, here is a chance for you to bring home the Samsung Galaxy S3, especially if amethyst purple is your color of choice.

Yes sir, the amethyst purple Samsung Galaxy S3 is now available over on Sprint, although only the 16GB model can be purchased, where it is sold for $99.99 a pop on contract, and this is after a $50 mail-in rebate. Verizon Slashes Samsung Galaxy S3 Price Before Galaxy S4 Announcement

Verizon Slashes Samsung Galaxy S3 Price Before Galaxy S4 Announcement

We already saw the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 drop on AT&T earlier this month in preparation of the Galaxy S4′s launch, but today, we’re seeing another wireless carrier in the U.S. announce it has started to drop the price of the smartphone as well.

Verizon Wireless has now also dropped the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 to $99 with a two-year contract, which we suspect is due to the Galaxy S4′s upcoming arrival, although the carrier has yet to acknowledge the device will be available on their network. At this point, the only U.S. carriers that have confirmed they will be carrying the Galaxy S4 has been AT&T and T-Mobile, although neither company has announced when they’ll be available. (more…)

Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Sparks Galaxy S3 Price Drop

Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Sparks Galaxy S3 Price Drop

With the upcoming release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, you would expect all previous versions of the device to start dropping in price, giving those who want to experience Galaxy S devices for discount prices. That’s exactly what’s going on this week as AT&T has just officially dropped the price of its Samsung Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 on AT&T will now retail for $99.99 with a two-year contract, which is a price drop of $100 instantly making it a great “budget” smartphone at its current price. We’re sure AT&T won’t be the only carrier in the U.S. to announce a price cut for the Galaxy S3 as we have a feeling other carriers will soon follow suit.

AT&T announced just last week it would be offering the Galaxy S4 for a rather high $249.99 with two-year contract. That may be a bit out of the price range of a number of potential Samsung Galaxy S owners, which also makes the Galaxy S3′s price drop even better for those who are looking to ditch their current smartphone to see what all the hubbub about the Galaxy S series is all about.

New Windows Phone Challenge Pits The Nokia Lumia 920 Against The Samsung Galaxy S3

Just the other day a video released by Nokia compared the Lumia 920’s low-light camera abilities to that of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Now it looks like Microsoft has decided to hop on board the bandwagon as well and has recently released a new Windows Phone Challenge video in which the Samsung Galaxy S3’s camera is pitted against none other than the Nokia Lumia 920. As expected, given that this is a Microsoft ad, the Nokia outperformed the Galaxy S3 in low-light photo shooting, thus causing the nice lady in the video to give up her Galaxy S3 in favor of the Lumia 920.

It is unsurprising that both Nokia and Microsoft have gone after Samsung in light of the South Korean company launching what could be thought of as the most anticipated Android smartphone of 2013. The Galaxy S2 and S3 were known to sport some pretty good cameras and we expect nothing less from the S4, but one of the highlights of the Lumia 920 is its low-light abilities and we guess Nokia and Microsoft is hoping that customers will keep that in mind when it comes down to choosing between Samsung and Nokia.

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 To Get Android 5.0? [Rumor]

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 To Get Android 5.0? [Rumor]

A pre-list reportedly obtained from Samsung reveals that the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 will get the Android 5.0 update when it is released in the coming months. Android 5.0 or Key Lime Pie is yet to be announced, though its quite obvious that not a lot of older devices will be compatible with it. If this list turns out to be correct then only five Samsung devices will be updated to Android 5.0. These five devices include Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2, Note 8.0 and Note 10.1.

The list also reveals that Galaxy S2 and the original Galaxy Note will received Android 4.2.2 update, though it is going to be the last update they ever get. Apart from these two devices, there are around fifteen other devices that won’t receive any updates after version 4.2.2. These include the following:

  • Galaxy Grand
  • Galaxy Grand DUOS
  • Galaxy Ace 2
  • Galaxy S III mini
  • Galaxy Beam
  • Galaxy Express
  • Galaxy S Advance
  • Galaxy S II
  • Galaxy S II Plus
  • Galaxy Premier
  • Galaxy Note
  • Galaxy Young
  • Galaxy Young DUOS
  • Galaxy Fame
  • Galaxy X Cover 2

The mid-range Android devices that Samsung released last year and in Q1 2013 will receive a value pack update, this according to the same source. This list is obviously not confirmed by the Korean manufacturer, and it remains to be seen what the final list turns out to be.

Purple Samsung Galaxy S3 To Arrive On Sprint Soon

Purple Samsung Galaxy S3 To Arrive On Sprint SoonIf you weren’t too impressed with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and you want something cheaper, then perhaps the Galaxy S3 could be of interest to you .While we can’t confirm if the Galaxy S3 will be cheaper once the Galaxy S4 launches, we can only presume that this will be the case. Either way if the Galaxy S3 is your phone of choice when your contract expires, you might be interested to learn that according to the folks at @evleaks, they claim that for Sprint, Samsung has made a special purple version of the Galaxy S3 (pictured above). To be honest we wish that someone would have done a black Galaxy S3 instead, but hey if you’re in the market for something a little more striking, then perhaps this version could be for you. It’s innards will remain exactly the same, so all you can look forward to is a fresh coat of paint. So, any takers for the purple Galaxy S3?

Samsung Believes The Future Is In The Soul Of the Device, Not The Form Factor

Samsung Believes The Future Is In The Soul Of the Device, Not The Form FactorThe Samsung Galaxy S4 was recently announced and yes, for those who missed it, the design is reminiscent of the Galaxy S3 and it comes with a plastic body. There are valid reasons as to why a plastic body was chosen by Samsung, namely because unlike glass that shatters when it drops, plastic is a bit more flexible, not to mention cheaper to produce as well. However with phones like the iPhone 5, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z all feature more “premium” materials, many questioned Samsung’s choice and during Engadget’s Expand conference, Samsung Design America head, Dennis Miloseski, claimed that material of choice was not as important as the “soul” of the device itself.

Miloseski was quoted as saying, “Actually, the global design process has been raised […] We’re making devices thinner and lighter, screens more beautiful. With Samsung, it’s less about that but more about building a meaningful relationship with technology.” He then went on to say, “As these devices become smarter, letting them sense where you are and adjusting to that, it’s known that design will improve over time […] But now, we’re thinking about: how do you create a soul for a device.” Samsung’s design philosophy is indeed interesting, especially with the Galaxy S3 whose design they claim was inspired by nature, and with the Galaxy S4, they are marketing it as a “life companion”. What do you guys think?

Nokia Highlights Lumia 920′s Low Light Camera Against Galaxy S3 In New Video

Owning an Android device and a Windows Phone device offers a very different experience. Not only is the hardware different, but the software as well, and manufacturers like Nokia have tried to set themselves apart from the competition by hyping up the camera, particularly on their Lumia 920 flagship device which they boast has one of the best low-light cameras available for smartphones today. To that extent the Finnish company has launched a new ad in which they compare their camera’s abilities against that of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Considering that Samsung has recently announced one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2013, the Galaxy S4, we guess Nokia is definitely capitalizing on the excitement by comparing it to the Galaxy S4’s predecessor. The ad itself is pretty simple and funny, showing that were it not for the Lumia 920’s low light abilities, the guy in the video would not have been able to get the girl’s number. Of course quality is subject to personal preference and tolerance levels, but in the meantime if having an excellent camera on your smartphone is your main priority, be sure to check out our review of the Nokia Lumia 920 to get a better idea for yourself.
