Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Now Available From AT&T

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Now Available From AT&TBack in June, Samsung announced the Galaxy S4 Zoom which was essentially the Galaxy S4 with a bigger and better camera on board, although it does sacrifice the svelteness of the device in favor of a larger camera, but we guess depending on the user, this may or may not be a bad thing. In any case as promised, the handset has been launched and is now available for purchase via AT&T for $199.99 on a new 2-year contract with the carrier, or if you’d rather not be tied down, you can pay $529.99 for the device off-contract. No word if the Galaxy S4 Zoom will arrive on other carriers, since it does not state if this is an AT&T exclusive, but for now AT&T will be your go-to carrier.

As far as specs are concerned, the Galaxy S4 Zoom will feature a 4.3” qHD display with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, and a 2,330mAh battery which while decently sized, might deplete quickly if you use the camera feature often. The camera (and its main selling point) is a 16MP camera with 10x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. Its default aperture is set at f/3.1 and will have its ISO extend up to 3,200, a xenon flash unit, and a physical shutter button which some photographers might appreciate. So, any takers?

AT&T Galaxy S4 Zoom Launches November 8th For $199 On Contract

AT&T Galaxy S4 Zoom Launches November 8th For $199 On Contract

Samsung launched its Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone earlier this year and followed it release up with a few variants, which include the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. AT&T already carries the S4, and S4 Active while it has confirmed that S4 mini will be available from it. So that just leaves out the 10x optical zoom lens touting Galaxy S4 Zoom, which is going to be launched by AT&T on November 8th for $199 on contract, the carrier has confirmed today.

By adding this device to its lineup, AT&T becomes the first carrier in the U.S. to launch the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. Customers who don’t want to be tied to a conventional two year contract can purchase the device on AT&T’s Next plan as well, opting to pay $25 per month instead. Even though it is a variant of the S4, its specifications are quite different from the flagship model. The S4 Zoom has a 4.3 inch 960×540 display, a 1.5GHz dualcore processor, 2,330mAh battery a 1.5GB of RAM. The camera is obviously the selling point, this device has a 16 megapixel camera with a 10x optical zoom lens, it beats out a number of smartphone cameras as it comes with a xenon flash instead of the LED alternative used by the others. That’s not all, AT&T will also give a free Galaxy Tab 3 to eligible customers who purchase the smartphone with a qualified voice and data plan, though the tablet will require a new two year data plan of its own from AT&T.

EVLeaks Show Off Galaxy S4 Zoom For AT&T

EVLeaks Show Off Galaxy S4 Zoom For AT&TThe serial leaksters over at @evleaks are at it again, where this time around, they have revealed what seems to be a press photo of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom that will be headed in the direction of AT&T. This does seem to be an unlocked device, and in the leaked photo, it shows off the AT&T brand complete with carrier identification and official apps, which would mean that we could very well be looking at an AT&T subsidized version in the near future. Great news for those who have always wanted a better camera in their smartphone, but do not really have the budget to pick up one in an unlocked model, right?

The 16-megapixel Galaxy S4 Zoom can be said to be an interesting mixture of the Samsung Galaxy Camera as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Would you want to pick up this camera cum smartphone hybrid when it arrives? Just to recap, the Galaxy S4 Zoom will arrive with a 4.3” qHD display with a resolution of 960×540, a dualp-core 1.5GHz chipset with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in tow. It is not the lightest nor smallest handset from Samsung, as it tips the scales at 208grams while measuring 15.4mm thick.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At Samsung

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At SamsungBoth Nokia and Microsoft have been taking digs at the competition in the past few months, with the most recent one from Nokia where the Finnish company made fun of the recent Apple Maps mishap. However thanks to a recent billboard sighting from Nokia over on Lombard Street, California, it looks like Nokia could be taking another jab at Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom, especially since the ad for the Nokia Lumia 1020 reads, “The most megapixels you can fit into a pair of skinny jeans.”

For those who are unfamiliar with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, this is a smartphone by Samsung that shares some of the hardware specs of the Galaxy S4, with the main difference being that the phone will pack a 16MP camera on the back. However the design of the phone felt more like a camera rather than a smartphone, making it an extremely bulky device, at least when compared to the more svelte Lumia 1020. While the Lumia 1020 does pack more megapixels when compared to the Galaxy S4 Zoom, it should be noted that more megapixels aren’t necessarily a good thing, nor does it determine a camera’s quality, but it’s still a pretty funny ad nonetheless.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE edition arrives in Europe

galaxy-s4-zoom-lte-euThe lines of convergence devices get blurred yet again in Europe with the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE edition, where this particular device was built based on their hugely successful smartphone range, with the critically acclaimed Galaxy S4 Zoom getting a nice kick in the butt thanks to the introduction of LTE capability. With an LTE connection, you would not want to look back at 3G which will then seem to work as though it is positively slow! Of course, all of the features which were central to the Galaxy S4 Zoom such as the revolutionary Zoom Ring will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE edition as well.

With the Zoom Ring, it offers a simple manner to access all the device’s key features thanks to a single, intuitive control system. These features will include In-Call Photo Share that enables users to capture and send an image directly to whomever they are talking to in a quick and easy manner, not to mention letting the Zoom Ring deliver instant access to the Quick Launch and Shortcut features. I guess after using this for a while, you would not really miss the traditional manual zoom method.

Just to make sure that you are able to capture stunning photos regardless of the situation, the Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE edition will carry an industry leading 10x optical zoom with a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor, Optical Image Stabilization and Xenon Flash. Regardless of your skill level, the Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE ought to be a decent performer in most photo shooting conditions. There is also Photo Suggest that uses GPS to pinpoint the location of the photographer, while Samsung’s popular Smart Mode lets you select from a bunch of pre-set modes in order to ensure that you capture the best photo possible all the time. Other specifications include Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Touchwiz support. Expect the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom LTE edition to arrive on a range of networks including Deutsche Telekom, Tele2, Telia Sonera and Orange.

Nokia Lumia 1020 VS Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

It has become a trend lately where companies are starting to push out devices with pretty insane cameras on them, and by that we’re talking about the cameras being the primary focus as opposed to the phone itself. Nokia has done that with their Lumia 1020, and Samsung has also recently introduced the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which looks more like a camera than a phone. Either way we’re sure many are wondering which device performs better, at least in photography, and 28Mobile has posted a video review where they basically pit the Nokia Lumia 1020’s camera against the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

While both devices had their hits and misses, the review ultimately favored the Nokia Lumia 1020, but then again we expect this will boil down to personal preference, and issues such as price, operating system, and hardware specifications will play a role as well. In any case if you have some time to spare, check out our review of the Lumia 1020 for additional details, or you can watch the video above to get a comparison and demonstration of either phone’s camera abilities.

Editor’s Letter: Microsoft backtracks. Is the Xbox One better for it?

In each issue of Distro, editor-in-chief Tim Stevens publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

DNP Editor's Letter Microsoft backtracks Is the Xbox One better for it

It’s not too often that we call a tech news story stunning, but that seems like an apt description for our reaction when Microsoft decided to pull an abrupt about-face and nix its controversial rights management for the Xbox One. We learned at the Seattle launch event that the system would have to call home once every 24 hours or every game installed from a disc would be disabled — even if you had the disc in the drive — and quickly the rumblings from the gamers started. They grew louder at E3 when Microsoft detailed the system’s DRM, a stream of complaints that quickly reached deafening levels on online forums and the like.

Yet, through all that, Microsoft stayed true to the party line, that the advantages of this system (being able to digitally share games, being able to change games without having to swap discs, etc.) outweighed the overwhelmingly negative reaction brewing among online gamers. That corporate message seemed to get bitter at times, weary at others, but never showed a sign of changing. Until, suddenly, a complete about-face this week.
