IHS: 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 Costs $237 To Build

IHS: 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 Costs $237 To BuildJust how much does it cost to construct a US-bound 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4? Well, since the majority of the components found within this flagship smartphone from Samsung was produced by the South Korean manufacturer themselves, research firm IHS figured out that the entire shebang would cost somewhere in the region of $237 in order to cobble together. Considering how most of the components were internally sourced and are not too far off from the Samsung Galaxy Note tablet’s innard that cost them approximately $270 per unit, it makes perfect sense to see a sub-$240 figure quoted.

IHS analyst Vincent Leung mentioned, “Samsung’s strength is this ability to in-source to itself. They just keep adding to the list of components that they can supply to themselves.” It is speculated that the international version of the phone will run on the Samsung-made Exynos 5 Octa which costs $28 per chip, while the US versions have the Qualcomm-powered Snapdragon processor that is cheaper at an estimated $20. Both the display and touchscreen are provided by Samsung and cost somewhere in the region of $75. Corning would provide the Gorilla Glass display cover, while Broadcom takes care of its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity needs.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Now Available At Staples

Samsung Galaxy S4 Now Available At Staples

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been available in the U.S. on a few wireless carriers, but let’s say you would rather not enter one of their retail locations and would prefer to pick up your phone while you’re picking up office supplies at Staples in an attempt to save as much time as possible in your busy schedule. Up until now, all you would be greeted with when asking to buy a Galaxy S4 was a bunch of dirty looks and probably a laugh or two, but starting today, you can return to that Staples location and laugh in their face as you walk away with a Galaxy S4.

Staples now offers the Samsung Galaxy S4 across 500 of its retail store locations as well as its online store for only $199.99 when you sign for a two-year contract. The $199.99 is the asking price across all supported carriers, which means you’ll save $50 on your Galaxy S4 if you’re a Sprint subscriber.

T-Mobile And AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Updates Arrive

T Mobile And AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Updates ArriveEarlier this morning, we did talk about how T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S4 has started to receive an update, and here we are with word that AT&T, too, would be on the receiving end of an update for their version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Just to refresh our memories, the T-Mobile variant’s refresh would carry version number M919UVUAMDL, where it would bring along with it improvements made to the Visual Voicemail app alongside ISIS app improvements. Of course, it goes without saying that the chances of other changes and fixes under the hood are also significantly high.

As for AT&T’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, it would be on the receiving end of update version I337UCUAMDL. Unfortunately, no official changelog has been issued, but this does not mean it is a dead end update as those who have already installed this Over The Air (OTA) update have started to share their much improved experience on the latest Samsung flagship smartphone.

Samsung Knox Security Software Activated For Galaxy S4

Samsung Knox Security Software Activated For Galaxy S4

Last month we reported that Samsung Galaxy S4 will not ship with the company’s Knox security software at launch. The delay in launch was because Samsung decided to further test the software both internally and with its carrier partners. Samsung confirmed the delay and clarified that while Galaxy S4 ships with Knox’s framework components installed, activation lies with solution providers. Samsung has now confirmed that it has activated Knox security software, activation for the end user ultimately rests in the hands of their mobile carrier. The company says that commercial availability of Know depends on B2B contracts.

Knox is almost similar in functionality to BlackBerry Balance, which allows users to use their corporate and personal accounts on the same device and easily switch between the two through passwords. BlackBerry has always touted the enhanced security of its platform, but manufacturers such as Samsung are continuously eroding its share in that particular niche as well. Only recently Samsung Galaxy devices were approved for use by the Pentagon, these devices come with Knox pre-installed. With the increasing popularity of Samsung’s devices, having a stable and solid security software on their high-end smartphones will open up new avenues of business with companies and corporations.

T Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 Gets UpdateWe did bring you news at the end of last month that the Samsung Galaxy S4 from Sprint has already begun to receive its first Over The Air (OTA) update, and here we are with word from T-Mobile that their flavor of the Samsung Galaxy S4 would be on the receiving end of a new software update. This is pretty fast, don’t you think so? After all, the smartphone has only been made available for purchase for a single week from T-Mobile, and so, from today onwards, owners of the Galaxy S4 from T-Mobile will be able to enjoy baseband version M919UVUAMDL after being bumped up from baseband version M919UVUAMDB.

Those Galaxy S4 owners out there can perform the update after grabbing it Over The Air or via Samsung Kies, whichever floats your boat. AT&T 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 Release Confirmed On May 10th

AT&T 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 Release Confirmed On May 10th

It was said that Samsung Galaxy S4 supplies were constrained due to unprecedented global demand, then Sprint went ahead and declared that the smartphone will be delayed on their network. In April, AT&T proudly gloated that it was on track with its Samsung Galaxy S4 launch. It was always known from the start that this carrier will offer the 32GB variant as well, but it wasn’t known when exactly it would do that. A tweet from the official AT&T account confirms that the 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available starting the 10th of May, for $249.99 with a two year contract.

We recently reported that almost half of the on-board storage on a 16GB Samsung Galaxy S4 is taken up by pre-loaded apps. Only a little over 8GB of internal storage is left free for the user, in which he or she can install apps or load content such as music, movies and TV shows. The 32GB variant offers greater storage, and no doubt, greater peace of mind. So rejoice if you’ve been putting off buying the 16GB one, AT&T is coming out with the answer to your problems on May 10th.

Samsung Takes A Swing At iPhone In New Galaxy S4 Commercial

It is not unusual for companies to take a swing at their rivals in commercials. We’ve seen Samsung mock the iPhone’s features quite a number of times in its past commercials. Recently Nokia aired its latest spot in which it showed Apple and Samsung fans fight it out, affirming that its Lumia range of smartphones rules the third spot in the market. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S4 commercial not only highlights the device’s amazing features, it also mocks the iPhone for not having similar features.

It is shown in the ad that a user can answer their phone by just waving over the S4, immediately after that an iPhone user is shown trying to do that, which he obviously can’t. This commercial also mocks the lack of Samsung’s S Beam like functionality in iPhone, which is used to effortlessly and quickly transfer files between devices. The punch line of this ad: “So some smartphones are smarter than other smartphones?” is said by a character with an iPhone in his hand. Samsung’s campaign has no doubt been meticulously created, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple counters to it when they release the next generation iPhone later this year.

Galaxy S4 Cyanogenmod First Nightly Builds Released

Galaxy S4 Cyanogenmod First Nightly Builds Released

Cyanogenmod is one of the most widely used custom ROMs for Android devices. Android users install custom ROMs because some want to get rid of software modifications that the manufacturer makes, for example Samsung slaps on the TouchWiz UI and HTC adds Sense. Back in March a statement by Team Hacksung was taken for Cyanogenmod’s official stance, the statement said that Galaxy S4 won’t be supporting Cyanogenmod. The very next day clarification came from Cyanogenmod’s camp saying that they wouldn’t have a stance on Galaxy S4 until it was sold at retail. Now Galaxy S4 is selling at retail and they have a stance on this smartphone. Galaxy S4 Cyanogenmod first nightly builds have now been released, albeit for Canadian and T-Mobile variants.

Steve Kondik, better known as Cyanogen, has confirmed that only Canadian and T-Mobile variants support the new builds right now, though in the future the international i9505 variant will be supported as well. He hasn’t confirmed whether Exynos Octa or the other i9500 variants will get support. Do keep in mind that flashing custom ROMs isn’t an easy task for a novice user. Please do so at your own risk.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Bootloader Unlocked

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Bootloader Unlocked

If you read our post on Steve Kondik confirming that AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 bootloader arrives locked, and wondered how long would it take for someone to unlock said bootloader, look no further as the AT&T Galaxy S4 bootloader has already been unlocked. Developers weren’t put off by the fact that AT&T was shipping S4 with locked bootloader, because it didn’t mean that it became unbreakable, it only causes delays for developers who will be creating custom ROMs for this latest smartphone.

Dan Rosenberg, a well known figure in the root/unlock arena, tweeted a photo earlier today confirming that he had unlocked the Galaxy S4 bootloader. In a Q&A published on xda, Dan has confirmed that it was the AT&T S4 that he cracked and it allows him to run custom kernels and recoveries. He has also made it clear that a release won’t be taking place until Verizon’s Galaxy S4 comes out later this month, Dan is almost certain this will work on Verizon’s variant as well, releasing it now would give the carrier an opportunity to plug it. Those who are willing to take advantage of this are advised not to install new Galaxy S4 software updates, though that might deprive them of, if any, crucial security and bug fixes so its really the user’s own decision.

Sprint’s Galaxy S4 Pre-Orders From Best Buy Have Been Delayed

Sprints Galaxy S4 Pre Orders From Best Buy Have Been DelayedUh-oh, it seems that there could be some bad news for Sprint subscribers who might have pre-ordered their Samsung Galaxy S4 from Best Buy! According to the folks at Android Central, it seems that Best Buy has been sending out emails to customers who have pre-ordered the device, basically stating that they have run into some delays and that the some of the orders placed for Sprint’s version of the Galaxy S4 could be shipped later with dates ranging anywhere between the 9th of May until the 20th of May.

Of course this is definitely not good news for those looking forward to getting Samsung’s latest smartphone and Best Buy did state in their email that customers are free to cancel their orders. It does not seem that Best Buy is doing anything to appease these customers, so we guess if you have been affected by the delay, you’ll either have to wait it out, or cancel it and buy it from somewhere else. Any of our readers out there affected by this delay from Best Buy?
