Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Results In iPhone Trade Ins Doubling

Shortly after the Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced, we’re sure there were a good majority of you who were already planning to trade in their current smartphones in preparation of its upcoming release. But it looks as though the weeks prior to the Galaxy S4′s launch was also important as it turns out a lot of you traded in your devices at that time as well.

According to SellCell.com, iPhone trade-ins specifically went up 194 percent in the month leading up to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 unveiling when compared to the month prior to the company’s Galaxy S3 launch. “Based on feedback from our partners and the news of several big product launches from HTC, BlackBerry and now Samsung, we get the feeling that the luster of the iPhone line for Apple fans may be waning a bit,” says SellCell’s managing director Colin White. “Our data bears this out as more people trade-in and search for iPhone quotes on the site than other product lines, an effect that we believe is from the introduction of new smartphones and features that iPhones don’t have.” (more…)

iSuppli Tears Down Galaxy S4 without Actually Having One

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for photos and video of gadgets being torn apart to see what they look like on the inside. Typically, when we’re looking at a teardown its the geeks over at iFixit. In fact, not too long ago they tore apart a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Today we are talking about a different sort of “teardown” of the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone.

I use the term “teardown” loosely, because the guys over at IHS iSuppli didn’t actually have an S4 to rip apart yet – they did it virtually. The company relied on its Mobile Handset Cost Model Service to figure out a bill of materials for constructing the smartphone. According to the company, they estimate the phone costs Samsung $244(USD), including an $8.50 manufacturing charge to build the S4. That cost is significantly more than the S3 from last year.

The increase in cost is blamed on the high-end parts that are expected to be used in the S4. The bill of goods estimates that the 5-inch 108p HD screen and its touch hardware costs $75 alone. The processor is estimated to cost $30 while the user interface and sensor subsystem adds $16. The LTE Version of the S4 is estimated to be cheaper to build than the HSPA+ version, but that’s mostly because it sports a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon instead of the eight-core Exynos Octa processor. The total bill of materials for the LTE version is $233.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 Exynos 5 model reportedly not coming to UK

Samsung’s GALAXY S 4 smartphone will come in two different variants when it releases sometime next month. The US version will include the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip running at 1.9GHz, while the international version of the phone will sport Samsung’s new Exynos 5 Octa chip running at 1.6GHz. However, it’s said that the Exynos 5 version of the new handset won’t be making its way to the UK, and will instead sport the Snapdragon 600.

According to UK wireless carrier Omio, they have been informed by Samsung that they will not be bringing the Exynos 5 version of the GALAXY S 4 to the UK, even though that’s the model earmarked for countries other than the US. Instead, future UK GALAXY S 4 owners will be treated with the Snapdragon 600 variant.

We already know that another UK carrier, EE, will be offering the new phone starting April 26, and we expect most other carriers to release the phone at some point around that time, but EE has yet to confirm what model of the GALAXY S 4 they’ll be offering. If Omio’s report is true, it looks like it’ll be the Snapdragon 600 that’ll be greeting customers.

If you don’t know much about Samsung’s new Exynos 5 Octa chip, you can check out our SlashGear 101 piece that serves as a primer for the new technology. Essentially, the new chip isn’t necessarily a octo-core processor, but rather a chip with two separate quad-core processors, one which serves as a backup of sorts. While

Griffin Unveils A Host Of Accessories For The Samsung Galaxy S4

Griffin Unveils A Host Of Accessories For The Samsung Galaxy S4If you’re planning on picking up the Samsung Galaxy S4, chances are you probably want to get some accessories to go along with it, whether it be a new case, an additional charger, or maybe a car charger for those constantly on the move. Whatever the case is, Griffin has you covered as they have unveiled a host of Samsung Galaxy S4 devices that may or may not appeal to you. Starting off with the Survivor Military-Duty Case, this case is said to have been designed to meet the US Department of Defense Standard 810G with a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame. It is expected to be priced at $49.99.

Next up will be the Survivor Skin, and just like the case we mentioned above, this is another case that will provide some heavy duty protection to your brand new Galaxy S4 with its silicone body. This case will come with a price tag of $19.99. Next would be the series of Reveal cases which we guess serves more to protect the back of your phone from dirt or scratches, not so much drops from great heights and will be priced at $24.99. Last but not least, Griffin also has a PowerBlock Universal AC charger and a PowerJolt Universal with ChargeSensor, although there was no mention of price for either of those.

Team CyanogenMod Clarifies Statement Made By Team Hacksung Over Samsung Galaxy S4

Team CyanogenMod Clarifies Statement Made By Team Hacksung Over Samsung Galaxy S4Remember we reported yesterday that the Samsung Galaxy S4 might not be seeing the CyanogenMod custom ROM? For those who don’t bother rooting or flashing custom ROMs, this isn’t a big deal, but for some this is a deal breaker. However it turns out that might not entirely be the case. The announcement was actually made by members of Team Hacksung, a collaborator for the CyanogenMod. Since that news has made headlines, the folks from CyanogenMod themselves have decided to step forward and clear any misunderstandings regarding that statement.

This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.

As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.

So what does this mean for potential Samsung Galaxy S4 owners? Does this mean that there will be a CyanogenMod ROM for the Galaxy S4? Or is the CyanogenMod team simply playing it diplomatically and are still assessing the situation? It’s hard to tell so we guess would-be Galaxy S4 owners will have to make their decision as to whether to buy the device based on the device’s own merits, instead of possible customizability through ROMs.

CyanogenMod developers will not support Samsung GALAXY S 4

In a surprising announcement by the CyanogenMod dev team, they have announced that they won’t be developing for the Samsung GALAXY S 4, or at least there’s no plans currently to support the new device. Team Hacksung member XpLoDWilD says that “nobody at team hacksung…plans to buy it, neither develop for it.” Team Hacksung is the group behind the official CM ports.

The dev team mostly blames the different variants of the new device, one being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 version in the US, and the international version which will rock out an 8-core Exynos 5 chip. They also note that many of the bugs present on the Galaxy S III will most likely be there on the GALAXY S 4 as well, most notably issues with camera support.

There’s also the issue with Samsung locking down their platform tightly. Samsung wants to protect their IP, which obviously makes for very developer-unfriendly devices. Of course, the company works around carriers and such, but they haven’t been too friendly toward independent developers as of late.

Of course, there will mostly likely be other ROMs available for the GALAXY S 4, and while other developers are following in the footsteps of the CyanogenMod dev team’s decision to pass on the new device, there will still be some developers who want a stock version bad enough that they’ll be willing to jump through the necessary hoops to make it happen.

HTC One wanders the streets of NYC during GALAXY S 4 event

HTC has unofficially declared war on Samsung. Not in legal terms, mind you, but an all-out street fight in a sense, literally. Before and during Samsung’s GALAXY S 4 announcement event, HTC wandered the streets of Times Square and Radio City Music Hall to showcase the company’s new HTC One smartphone to random passers-by.

If you didn’t happen to be waiting in line at the GALAX S 4 event at Radio City Music Hall, then you may not know that HTC showed up and passed out free beverages to those waiting in line. It’s the ultimate troll maneuver, but that’s not all. HTC posted a video on their YouTube channel showing off the HTC One to random folks in Times Square in order take attention off the GALAXY S 4 and put it on the new HTC One.

In the video (which is cleverly edited, of course) shows a handful of people getting the chance to play around with HTC’s new phone, and a few of the company’s PR folks were there to tell people all about it, saying that they “just wanted to make sure that people got a chance to see it,” among the Samsung festivities.

This isn’t the only time that HTC has downplayed the significance of Samsung’s new device. They called the GALAXY S 4 “more of the same,” and they haven’t been afraid to call out the company recently. Of course, when you make a really awesome device, it’s hard not to get a little competitive, and even a little snarky.
