LG accuses Samsung of infringing on eye-tracking patent on GALAXY S 4

The tango between Samsung and LG is starting back up again. LG is accusing Samsung of infringing on one of its eye-tracking patents. Specifically, the dispute deals with Samsung’s “Smart Pause” on the GALAXY S 4 and “Smart Video” on the Optimus G Pro, both of which automatically pause video when your eyes stray away from the screen.

LG claims it applied for the patent in 2009, as well as other eye-tracking patents as far back as 2005. There’s nothing that the company can do right now, but once the GALAXY S 4 officially launches late next month, they’ll be able to investigate and see whether or not Samsung infringed on one of LG’s patents.

Samsung denies any infringing on LG’s patent, and the says that it uses its own technology for “Smart Pause.” LG’s Optimus G Pro was unveiled at Mobile World Congress last month and is expected to release sometime next month in the US, and there’s already an update out for the new phone that enables eye scrolling, similar to Samsung’s “Smart Scroll.”

This isn’t the first time that LG has turned up the heat on the battle between the Optimus G Pro and the GALAXY S 4. Before the GALAXY S 4 launch, LG trolled Samsung in New York City by placing a clever and bold ad directly on top of Samsung’s ad for the new phone, officially mocking the company before the phone has even been unveiled. Of course, this is only the start, so we’re bound to see more skirmishes between the two companies in the near future.

No CyanogenMod Support For Samsung Galaxy S4

No CyanogenMod Support For Samsung Galaxy S4Google’s Nexus devices are favored by some Android users due to the stock Android experience. However the Nexus 4 when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S4 pales in comparison in terms of specs and features, and we expect that many Android users will flock over to the Galaxy S4 and ultimately root and flash a custom ROM on their device to rid themselves of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. If that is your plan and you were eyeing CyanogenMod as being your custom ROM of choice, you might want to start looking elsewhere because according to the team behind CyanogenMod, they claim that they will not be supporting the Galaxy S4.

Nobody at Team Hacksung (the team behind Galaxy S2, Note, S3, Note2, G Tabs… official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, [and] the bugs we have on the S3 will probably be there on S4, too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes Qualcomm releases sources, but Exynos sources we had were far from [working on] actual Galaxy products. I’m pretty sure the same will happen for this one.

That’s a uniform “no” from us.

Of course we expect that there might be other custom ROMs out there that you can flash on the Galaxy S4, but considering that CyanogenMod is probably one of the most popular custom ROMs out there, this will no doubt be a bummer for would-be Galaxy S4 owners.

LG and Samsung Dispute Over Eye-Tracking Technology In Their Phones

LG and Samsung Dispute Over Eye Tracking Technology In Their PhonesUh-oh, it looks like Samsung and LG are at it again and this time it is over the eye-tracking technology that can be found on both the Samsung Galaxy S4, and the LG Optimus G Pro. According to LG (via Yonhap News), they claim that they own the patent to said technology which is available on the Optimus G Pro called the Smart Video which is similar to Samsung’s Smart Pause. This feature allows a video playing on the phone to be paused when the user looks away. LG has yet to file an official complaint but they are stating that they will be checking to see if Samsung’s Smart Pause feature has infringed upon their patent.

Naturally Samsung has denied such allegations, claiming that they have used their own technology and use a method different from LG to offer a similar experience. Since both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the LG Optimus G Pro are both companies’ flagship phones of 2013, we can understand why both companies are up in arms over this. After all if a potential injunction is up for grabs, we expect that LG would want to capitalize on that, especially if it will give them an edge over their South Korean competitor.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Outperforms The Competition In Early Benchmarks

Samsung Galaxy S4 Outperforms The Competition In Early BenchmarksThe Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced just last week and while we have yet to get our hands on the device for a full review, our initial hands-on left us pretty happy. However thanks to early benchmark results, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S4 has enough power under its hood to give smartphones today a run for their money. The benchmark results were calculated using Geekbench 2, and based on the scores, the Galaxy S4 managed to beat out phones like the recent HTC One, the iPhone 5, the Blackberry Z10 and even its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, although we expected that in the latter case otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense, would it?

Of course there are some discrepancies in the devices since they all don’t use the same chipsets, such as the HTC one whose Snapdragon 600 chipset is clocked at 200MHz slower than the Galaxy S4, and the iPhone 5 which uses an entirely different chipset altogether. Like we said these benchmark scores are pretty early on and there are probably other tests that could and should be conducted in order to provide a fairer assessment, so be sure to stay tuned for our full and comprehensive review! However in the meantime what do you guys make of these results?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Support Qi Wireless Charging Standard

Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Support Qi Wireless Charging StandardOne of the rumored features of the Samsung Galaxy S4 was that it would come with wireless charging. Unfortunately during the Galaxy S4’s announcement, Samsung did not make any mention of wireless charging, leaving us to wonder if such a feature was merely a rumor. As luck would have it, Qi has announced that the Qi wireless charging standard would be supported in the Samsung Galaxy S4, meaning that owners of Qi wireless charging mats or cases will be able to charge a Galaxy S4 wirelessly.

However since Samsung did not make any such announcement, this means that if you were to buy a Galaxy S4, do not expect it to be able to charge wireless right out of the box. Instead potential owners looking for wireless charging action will have to buy compatible back plates if they wish to enjoy the convenience and novelty of wireless charging. No word on pricing or availability of said back plates, but if wireless charging is one of your “must have” features, you can rest assured that the Galaxy S4 will be able to support just that.

Samsung Galaxy 4′s Plastic Case Defended By Design Chief

Samsung Galaxy 4s Plastic Case Defended By Design Chief

We know there were a number of you who were hoping Samsung would move on from the Galaxy S’ plastic case design to offer something a bit more premium in the Galaxy S4. We’re sure you were bummed to see another plastic case will house such a premium device, but as you would expect, there’s absolutely a reason as to why the company chose a plastic case over another material.

Samsung’s design chief Dennis Miloseski spoke at Engadget’s Expand conference over the weekend, defending the Galaxy S4′s design as well as pointing out the company is focused on experiences it can create with its devices. “Actually, the global design process has been raised,” Miloseski said. “We’re making devices thinner and lighter, screens more beautiful. With Samsung, it’s less about that but more about building a meaningful relationship with technology. As these devices become smarter, letting them sense where you are and adjusting to that, it’s known that design will improve over time. But now, we’re thinking about: how do you create a soul for a device.” (more…)

Qi Confirms Upcoming Galaxy S4 Wireless Charging Accessories

dsc01868

It’s official: The Samsung Galaxy S4 will support Qi wireless charging but only through an optional backplate. When the Samsung Galaxy S4 launched last week, Engadget spied several Qi wireless charging accessories. This of course lead to wide-eyed speculation since Samsung had forgotten to mention this little tidbit during their elaborate dog and pony show. Thankfully Qi just took to the wires to clear the air.

From the press release,

The new Samsung Galaxy S4 uses the Qi wireless charging standard in its optional back battery cover and wireless charging pad accessories, as demonstrated at Samsung Unpacked 2013. The accessories are fully compatible with all Qi chargers and Qi-compatible phones.

No further details were given including release date and price. Still, just that little bit resolves the confusion surrounding the device.

This partnership, Samsung and Qi, comes as a bit of surprise. Samsung has long stood with Qualcomm as founding members of the Alliance for Wireless Power. This system uses over-the-air charging called A4WP. Digitimes first reported this switch last week before the S4′s unveiling. And since the two wireless platforms use different wavelengths, they’re incompatible.

Qi is currently used by products produced by Blackberry, ConvenientPower, Delphi Automotive Systems, Energizer, Haier Group, Hitachi Maxell HTC, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Philips Electronics, Samsung, Sony, TDK Corporation, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, and Verizon Wireless. And they’re all compatible. Even the Nexus 4 charging orb could be used to charge an S4 equipped with a Qi backplate.

Now that Samsung’s latest superphone supports Qi, expect to see a wide-range of comptible hardware. Fire up your 3D printers, makers. It’s time to make some accessories.

Apple Educates Potential Galaxy S4 Adopters Why People Love The iPhone

Apple Educates Potential Galaxy S4 Adopters Why People Love The iPhone

Samsung finally unveiled its long-awaited Galaxy S4 late last week with many mobile phone users seriously considering the device. Apple knows this and has decided to remind these potential Galaxy S4 adopters why people love the iPhone.

Apple’s iPhone 5 landing pages having been updated to read “Loving it is easy. That’s why so many people do,” which then leads to a number of reasons why the device is still considered to be quite popular. “iPhone owners love their iPhone,” the page contunes. “And not just because of the Retina display. Or the amazing camera. Or the long battery life. It’s all those things plus the fact that iPhone is just so easy to use.” (more…)

Samsung Galaxy S4 Could Be Priced Cheaper Than The iPhone 5

Samsung Galaxy S4 Could Be Priced Cheaper Than The iPhone 5When Samsung announced the Galaxy S4, they revealed that it should be arriving towards the end of April, however pricing of the device was yet to be determined, or at least shared by Samsung. Considering that the device would be priced differently depending on region and carrier, we guess that’s one of the reasons Samsung did not share that particular detail. However it has been spotted on the terms and conditions page of Samsung’s website for the giveaway of the Samsung Galaxy S4, that in the small print it reads that the “approximate retail value” of the Galaxy S4 is at $579.

Assuming that this is the case, even after tax the Galaxy S4 would be cheaper than Apple’s iPhone 5 which is priced at $649 SIM-free. This price is also a SIM-free price, meaning that you will not be tied to any particular carrier and you can switch to any carrier as you please. Granted it is a good deal more than what you would pay on contract, but we guess some customers prefer the freedom and flexibility. In any case since Samsung did not announce any official pricing just yet, we wouldn’t place too much emphasis on this price for now.
