Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 gets voice calling capability

Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1Just when you thought that the Samsung Galaxy Note or its successor were the largest phones ever put in your pocket, think again. Some enterprising folks over at XDA Developers have decided to make sure your pockets are ripped to a larger size than ever before, thanks to the introduction of voice calling capability in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Granted, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not the newest tablet in the market, and neither does it fall under the phablet category, but there is nothing quite like a little bit of tweaking on the software front to open up new frontiers never imagined before.

Just as how there are many roads to Rome, there are also several installation methods where you can choose from, with each of these being based on a different ROM. As long as your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on the newest stock Ice Cream Sandwich ROM and derivatives, CyanogenMod9, or CyanogenMod 10, you’re good to go. There are some issues though, although these were reported not to happen too often, that is, it is best to run on 2G in order to enjoy hassle-free calls. Restrictions are also in place, since this mod applies only for folks who own the 3G-enabled Galaxy Tab 10.1, otherwise known as the GT-P7500.

While 3G Galaxy Note 10.1 owners use their Bluetooth-enabled S-Pen to make calls on their tablet, those with the equivalent Galaxy Tab are left out in the rain. Fortunately, the folks over at XDA Developers have leveled the playing field with four roms that bestow call-making powers on 3G variants of that particular slate. Three ICS and one Jelly Bean builds exist, with the only fault that sometimes you’ll have to switch to 2G to get calls working properly. If you’re really interested in stretching the definition of “phabletbeyond breaking point, head on down to the source links for more information.

As Samsung Tries To Get Galaxy Tab Injunction Lifted, Apple Names Eight Samsung Products It Wants Banned

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

After Friday’s $1.05 billion verdict in favor of Apple, Samsung is now trying everything to reverse the trend while Apple is charging foward at full speed. Even though the injunction hearing will take place on September 20, some Samsung devices, such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, were subject to preliminary injunctions. The jury decided that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not infringe the iPad D’889 design patent — Apple’s trade dress — and therefore invalidated the prior injunction.

Samsung requests a dissolution of the sales ban, the $2.6 million bond from Apple that protected Samsung if it was determined that the injunction was unnecessary, and probably damages for lost sales.

Apple, fresh off of its court victory last week, just informed the court the products it is going after for a U.S. sales ban on the basis of patent infringement. Thankfully, at least for Samsung, most of these products are no longer available. But Samsung will no doubt fight Apple on this as well.

  • Droid Charge
  • Galaxy S Showcase
  • Galaxy Prevail
  • Galaxy S 4G
  • Galaxy S2 (AT&T)
  • Galaxy S2 (Skyrocket)
  • Galaxy S2 (T-Mobile)
  • Galaxy S2 Epic 4G

Samsung is trying not to lose ground in the legal battle against Apple. On June 26, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered a preliminary sales ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 based on the fact that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was hurting Apple’s sales due to trade dress and design patent infringement. At that time, Koh seemed convinced because she did not even wait for an Apple hearing to issue the injunction.

That’s why it is important to note that Koh can overrule the jury’s decision and state that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does infringe Apple’s D’889 design patent.

In addition to the importance of Koh’s next move, the device was part of the list of Samsung devices that infringed several Apple software patents — at least ’381, ’915 and ’163 patents, respectively for “bounce back” scrolling, pinching to zoom and tapping to zoom. Apple might be asking for another review of that verdict on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the appeals court.

As long as the final injunction process is not over, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still not out of danger. Yet, Samsung’s argument seems valid. It is worth trying to obtain damages from Apple. As the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is already out, reparations and brand reputation could certainly be the main motivation behind Samsung’s court filing.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 101 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US

Samsung was widely (if unofficially) expected to upgrade the Galaxy Tab line to Ice Cream Sandwich this summer. Thankfully, that wasn’t just wishful thinking on the part of a few fans. Numerous Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi owners in the US have reported receiving an official push to Android 4.0.4 shortly after getting out of bed on Monday. The new TouchWiz, Chrome support and more are all welcome — just don’t anticipate any unique twists from the upgrade. In some respects, we’re likely getting a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with a Tegra 2 processor. The only real uncertainties are when the rest of the eligible Galaxy Tab line will make the leap as well as the possibility of Jelly Bean; hopefully, it’s not the end of the update road for some of Samsung’s earliest tablet adopters in the country.
