Samsung brings Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 tablets

When it comes to modern day devices, there is nothing quite like making sure it runs on the latest software update so that it will “purr” along nicely, and this is what Samsung intends to do with their latest release of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to two of their tablets which was introduced not too long ago – the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The thing is, only Wi-Fi versions of these models will be able to enjoy the Jelly Bean update, so owners of the cellular versions will have to play the patience card and wait.

As some of us might already know, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will bring with it a suite of performance improvements, in addition to the introduction of Premium Suite that had made the Galaxy Note 2 all the more productive. Premium Suite will boast a collection of new features which will further upgrade multi-tasking and productivity, all the time enhancing personalization and offering new levels of creativity. Users are then able to enjoy improved S Pen support in addition to the ability to easily open and resize multiple apps, letting one view them from across the screen, layered on top of each other.

There are also other features which have been introduced so that the capabilities of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 will be boosted, including the Multi Window feature which enables users to experience a dual view, running two apps side-by-side on the screen. Cascade View, on the other hand, lets users freely resize, move and pin selected applications in multiple views, making sure they can run simultaneously or while operating the home-screen. This will definitely resonate with folks who are so used to working on a PC, and watch the productivity bar spike!

Unfortunately, there is still no word on when the cellular models of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 will be updated. Hopefully it is sooner rather than later.

Next-Gen Samsung Galaxy Tab Devices Rumored For MWC 2013 Unveiling

Galaxy Tab 2 640x498 Next Gen Samsung Galaxy Tab Devices Rumored For MWC 2013 UnveilingSo Samsung is expected to unveil a couple of new devices at MWC 2013 which will be taking place next month. So far we’ve heard about a certain Galaxy Note 8.0 along with a possible 5.8” Android smartphone which could also be unveiled, and thanks to a recent report by a South Korean publication, Samsung could be launching their next-generation range of Galaxy Tab tablets at MWC as well. Considering that MWC is a pretty big deal as far as mobile devices are concerned, it is not surprising that Samsung has a few devices up their sleeves that they saved for the event.

At the moment it seems that a Full HD 7” Galaxy Tab has been “confirmed” with a quad-core processor on board, but given that the Galaxy Tab range of tablets also comes in a 10.1” model as well, there is no word on that particular model just yet. The exact specifics have not been unveiled but hopefully more details will surface from now until then, so stay tuned for more updates, but at the same time take this news with a grain of salt since they cannot be confirmed at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy Tab To Be Freely Sold In The Netherlands

dutch no injunction Samsung Galaxy Tab To Be Freely Sold In The NetherlandsThe raging courtroom battle between behemoths Apple and Samsung continues worldwide with no sign of letting up, but the latest round would go to the South Korean conglomerate, as the Dutch court ruled that there will be no injunction against the entire Samsung Galaxy Tab range in the Netherlands, so this family of tablets will be free to be sold across retail shelves throughout the Netherlands.

The Dutch court in The Hague came to this decision, meaning Apple’s request for the court to ban the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales is no longer valid. Apple claims that the design looks too similar to the Apple iPad due to its rounded corners (pffft!), and since Samsung has emerged the victor here, Apple would need to fork out around 64,000 Euros in damages. Should Apple try anything funny like blocking sales of the Galaxy Tabs in shops, this will result in a further fine of up to 100,000 Euros daily. Let’s see what is up Apple’s sleeves next…

Another Legal Blow For Apple As Dutch Court Concurs With U.K. Ruling That Samsung Galaxy Tablets Do Not Infringe iPad’s Design

apple-samsung

Apple’s courtroom skirmishes against its Android OEM enemy number one Samsung have not been going very well of late, despite Cupertino’s big $1bn+ damages win against Samsung last summer. Today another legal blow for Cupertino: a Dutch district court has ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy tablets do not infringe Apple design patents.

The latest Apple vs Samsung court ruling concerns the rounded corners of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablets — which Apple had argued infringe the design of the iPad. The Dutch court rejected Apple’s argument — saying there is “no question of an infringement” — and citing previous similar decisions in U.K. courts.

A notice on its website (translated from Dutch with Google Translate) reads:

Today the Hague district court judgment in a case of Samsung against Apple. At issue in this case is whether the design of some of Samsung Galaxy tablets infringe a design right from Apple. The court believes that there is no question of an infringement.

The court refers to British law which the court already had found the same two instances on the same infringement question.

While it might seem logical to conclude that all these court misses are accumulating to weigh down Apple’s overall legal hopes against Samsung — Reuters notes that the pair are engaged in patent litigation in at least 10 countries — the reason for the Dutch court falling in line with the U.K. ruling comes down to this case being focused on a design/IP patent, rather than a technical patent.

According to the FOSS Patents blog, design/IP patents are currently subject to EU-level law, whereas technical patents are adjudicated on a country-by-country basis.  ”It would have taken some exceptional circumstances for the Dutch court to disagree with the UK court,” the blog notes.

Samsung provided the following statement commenting on the Dutch court ruling:

We welcome the court’s decision, which reaffirmed decisions made by courts in other countries that our Galaxy Tab products do not infringe Apple’s registered design right. We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners and that the origins of Apple’s registered design features can be found in numerous examples of prior art. Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited.

At the time of writing Apple had not responded to a request for comment.

Last October Apple lost an appeal in a U.K. High Court against a tablet design patent judgement that had found in Samsung’s favour. The U.K. court also ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab did not infringe the iPad’s design (the judge in the original trial actually said Samsung’s tablet was ‘not cool enough’ to infringe Apple’s design). In that instance the court ordered Apple to publish an acknowledgement of the judgement on its website and run ads in paper-based media.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Android 4.1 With Premium Suite

So, we do know that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, at least in select areas around the globe, has already started to receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system update, which will certainly keep owners of the tablet more than happy. Well, there is more than meets the eye as the Transformers would have it, as Samsung has added to the overall feeling of anticipation by revealing how Premium Suite will be part of the operating system update.

I guess apart from all that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is able to deliver, users too, will be able to enjoy extended Multi Window functionality, where it will allow your device to open up to 16 apps simultaneously, and each of these “windows” can be moved, resized and pinned according to your whim and fancy. Not only that, Samsung’s Air View has also been thrown into the Premium Suite mix, which enables users to preview appointments, emails, and video among others simply be hovering the S Pen right above the display.

Other new additions will include Easy Clip, Quick Command, Photo Note, Paper Artist and an enhanced S Note app. No idea on when exactly will Premium Suite and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean roll out, but we sure as heck hope that an early Christmas present would be more than welcome.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update

It has been quite some time, but I guess all of your patience has paid off if you are a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi owner – it seems that Samsung has started to release the first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware updates for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, otherwise known as the P7310 if model numbers are your cup of tea. This has been a long time in coming, considering how the Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi has long been the first generation of Galaxy Tab tablets, and to be in agony while the rest of the world has already moved on to Jelly Bean is more than some can bear.

Folks who own the above mentioned Galaxy Tab 8.9 model will be able to update your Galaxy Tab via Samsung KIES or OTA – assuming the device is from Malaysia, as the source claims. It is said that with Ice Cream Sandwich running on your tablet, it feels like a totally new device, running a whole lot faster while delivering superior battery life.

Samsung reportedly rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Galaxy Tab 2 in France

Good news Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 owners – if you are still using the tablet and have not upgraded to a newer device like the Nexus 7 or Nexus 10, you might be interested that your experience on your tablet could be changing in the near future. It seems that Samsung is rolling out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean up to WiFi models of the Galaxy Tab 2. If you have received the notification, you can start updating it OTA or through the Samsung KIES software. Unfortunately according to folks at SamMobile, the update is only available in France at the moment, so for those stateside or in other parts of the world will have to wait. No word on when the update will begin making its way to other countries but at least it’s still good news as soon Galaxy Tab 2 owners will be able to enjoy the features of Jelly Bean, namely Project Butter which should make the Android experience a lot better and smoother.

AT&T offers Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from November 9th

AT&T has announced that November 9th will be the date when both the Samsung ATIV smart PC and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will arrive at AT&T retail stores in the US, letting you take advantage of AT&T’s 4G LTE network with your spanking new device(s) if you decide to pick them up. Just to recap, the Samsung ATIV smart PC is a spanking new tablet which was specially designed for Windows 8, while something we would all be more familiar with is the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, where it will play nice with the 4G LTE spectrum.

You might want to check your bank balance before that though, as the Samsung ATIV smart PC has been slapped with a rather hefty $799.99 price point, while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a wee bit more affordable at $499.99 a pop. Not only that, Samsung and AT&T wants you to have that feel good factor going by offering customers up to $100 off should you purchase any connected Samsung device of lesser or equal value, whenever you pick up a Samsung Galaxy smartphone of your choice – albeit with a two-year agreement, of course.
