Switched On: Rubber brands

Switched On Rubber brands

One sits far atop the Android smartphone heap while the other has recently stepped up its efforts to compete more aggressively by acquiring the stake of its decade-long joint venture partner. But at the recent IFA event, electronics giants Samsung and Sony both acknowledged the importance of their smartphone sub-brands by stretching them into new product categories. For Sony, its Xperia sub-brand hopped across to its tablet while Samsung brought the Galaxy brand to a connected camera. How these companies have stretched these brands reflects their relative position both in terms of where they’ve moved from and where they’ve moved to.

For Sony, the move of Xperia to another product category represents somewhat of a full circle (as does the return of the Sony brand to handsets itself). Part of the early playbook for Sony Ericsson was to bring established Sony Electronics brands — notably Cyber-Shot and Walkman — to phones focused on imaging and music in the heyday of the feature phone, which the joint venture clung to for too long. Xperia, in contrast, was the company’s first “native” sub-brand meant to evoke “experience”, of course. And while many in the line have been well-received, they never translated into a strong global market share for Sony Ericsson.

Verizon’s Galaxy Note II purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Verizon's Galaxy Note 2 purportedly poses for the camera, over-branding included

Phablet lovers on Verizon may have reason to rejoice, because the carrier’s variant of the Galaxy Note II may have been captured in the flesh. The white device is aesthetically identical to the version straight from Samsung’s house, save for its questionable carrier-branding. While the back of the phone sports a seemingly legit “Verizon 4G LTE” logo along with its moniker, you’ll notice a rather obnoxiously-planted “Verizon” logo on its home button — perhaps a bit too ridiculous to be the real deal. That said, it’s almost certain that the Note II will officially make it to Verizon, no matter if it’s dressed like the photos above or not; this purported variant lines up nicely with screenshots leaked earlier this week showing AT&T and Verizon compatibility. Now, if only we could have further confirmation — perhaps in the way of a second visit to the FCC in the near feature or some leaky memos.

[Thanks, Sean P.]

Galaxy Note II makes first FCC appearance, variant lacks US-friendly LTE bands

Galaxy Note II makes first FCC appearance, lacks USfriendly LTE bands

Samsung pegged its new Note for an October launch in Europe and Asia, in typical FCC fashion, it’s passed through those wireless testing labs ahead of its arrival in stores around the world. For US readers, there’s a severe lack of compatible US LTE bands on this Galaxy Note II, which suggests this is a global model we’re dealing with, likely to connect with other 4G networks — there’s a whole lot of them out there. Aside from that, there’s a typical selection of 850/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 850 WCDMA/HSPA radios inside this GT-N7105 model. However, we’re expecting another Note II iteration — packing friendlier LTE frequencies — will make an appearance at the FCC pretty soon.

Samsung Galaxy S III drops to $99 on Amazon for a ‘very limited time only’

In the market for a Samsung Galaxy S III, but you despise dropping over two figures on electronics? First and foremost, we might suggest another hobby to you. We’d also suggest snapping up a half price $99 Galaxy S III from Amazon today, where it’s on sale “for a very limited time only.” Yes, you have to sign up for a new individual or family activation, but at least you can choose between Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T for that new contract. It’ll even arrive in two days, per Amazon’s free two-day shipping, and there are three different colors of the 16GB version to choose from. Hot dog!

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G bringing keyboard, longwinded name to T-Mobile September 19th

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G bringing keyboard, longwinded name to TMobile September 19th

We knew it was arriving soon, but until now, we weren’t exactly sure what T-Mobile meant when it said the Relay 4G was hitting in the “coming weeks.” Now the magenta carrier is putting the release of the QWERTY handset formerly known as the also verbose Galaxy S Blaze Q at September 19th. The slider will run you and your thumbs $150 with a two-year contract, after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Leaked screenshots show Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T and Verizon

Leaked screenshots show Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T, may be coming to TMobile and Sprint, too

Samsung may not have spilled the beans on US variants of the Galaxy Note II, but phablet fans have already set their sights on the usual suspects. Aiding rumors, for instance, are a collection of screenshots showing the phone running on both Verizon and Ma Bell’s networks. A BreifMobile source says that the AT&T version of the oversized handset is being tested, as are T-Mobile, Bell Canada and Sprint variations. The AT&T version is said to be a dead ringer for the international model, retaining its quad-core Exynos processor while snubbing the network’s branding. Much like Sammy itself, the source didn’t have much to say about availability — just “soon.” Can’t wait? Skip on down to the source link below to tease yourself with leaked screenshots.

Samsung Claims Its Phones Don’t Infringe on Apple Patents Because Android Multitouch Sucks Too Much [Samsung]

While the big Apple vs. Samsung case is finished in the U.S. there are plenty of other patent skirmishes between the two here and around the globe. In an attempt to narrowly avoid a recall and ban in the Netherlands, Samsung threw Android under the bus, claiming that its’ phones couldn’t be infringing because Android multitouch just isn’t as good as Apple’s is. Samsung Galaxy Note II with dual-SIM capabilities gets spotted in the wild

Samsung Galaxy Note II with dualSIM capabilities gets spotted in the wild

Now that the second-gen Note is finally out of Samsung’s precious (and teasing) bag, we’re learning more and more about the exorbitant device — not to say we weren’t expecting this to be the case, however. Still, we were rather intrigued by the distinct Galaxy Note II pictured above, which, by the looks it, comes pre-loaded with dual-SIM capabilities, and thus makes this particular unit slightly different than that one unit we played with back at IFA. Although details are still very scarce at the moment, rumor has it the dual-SIM Note will only be available in China and, aside from the slot additions, all other features the famed phablet offers appear to be exactly the same. Feel free to check out the source below for more pics, but don’t expect anything too exciting or out of the ordinary — unless, of course, extra SIM slots are your thing.

Samsung notches more than 20 million Galaxy S III smartphones sold in 100 days

Samsung notches more than 20 million Galaxy S III smartphones sold in 100 days

The phone that a passel of worldwide lawsuits couldn’t hold back, Samsung’s Galaxy S III, is the company’s most successful yet, as Samsung announced tonight that it’s delivered more than 20 million units in 100 days. That figure puts it at three times the sales rate of the Galaxy S II when it broke 20 million in February, ten months after launch and more than six times the original Galaxy S, which took 17 months. In a rare occasion, Samsung has supplied regional sales figures — revealing six million devices for Europe, 4.5 million in Asia, 4 million in North America and 2.5 million in Korea. According to Samsung’s gleeful press release it’s moving 200,000 units a day — any predictions for where that pace (or sales for its larger cousin, the Galaxy Note II which has its own hard act to follow) will go from here?
