Hasta La Gadget!

Well, well, would you look at that? Staying true to what we’d heard yesterday, it appears that long-awaited Android 4.1 refresh is finally making its way to Sprint’s own flavor of the Galaxy Nexus. As expected, the Jelly Bean update brings a slew of familiar, but rather marvelous features to the Now Network’s GNex, including Google Now, an improved notification and voice search system, offline dictation and, of course, a smoother UI that’s made possible by Mountain View’s now-famed Project Butter. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the Nexus S 4G, as the 4.1.x goods are still MIA for this device — however, we’ll be sure to let you know if that changes any time soon. In the meantime, those lucky Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners can eagerly “check now” for updates on their handset, and don’t forget to tell us how much you’re liking it so far.

Update: We’re receiving tips that Android 4.1 is now available to Nexus S 4G users, too. Word is that it’s a phased rollout, so check now and then check often. [Thanks, Jesse]

The Apple v. Samsung patent war that will seemingly never end has taken another turn today, as Apple is asking the court to add newer Samsung Galaxy hardware, including the Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to its complaint against the Galaxy Nexus and other related devices. If you thought updated software and designs would keep these newer smartphones and tablets out of the fight — you were wrong. Just to help you keep things straight, remember this is a separate case from the one that ended exactly a week ago with a decision in Apple’s favor to the tune of more than $1 billion in damages.

At issue here are eight of Apple’s utility patents that it says Samsung has infringed upon. The headliner patents at issue are ‘721 which covers slide to unlock, and ‘604, which could apply to the universal search feature Samsung has been pulling from its phones recently. Another familiar entry is the ‘647 patent Apple slapped HTC with in 2010, which has a vague description but applies to clicking on a phone number in an email, for example, to call it. Software has taken a leap forward too, with many phones now offering a vital way to remember when that term paper is due… or to procrastinate at the pub. We have nine choices of phones in our shortlist, spread out across three categories to serve everyone from the I-just-need-a-phone freshman to the overloaded doctoral candidate. Nobody puts Google Wallet in the corner for long, not even Big Red. Though the carrier courted controversy late last year by withholding support for the burgeoning NFC-based platform amidst security concerns, it appears to have finally changed tack. Owners of that LTE Galaxy Nexus variant are now reporting the ability to access the app from the Play store, no workarounds necessary. Though we weren’t able to verify the success of that particular method — no results surfaced during a quick store search — we did have success downloading the application to our stock, unrooted device using a direct market link. We’ve since reached out to Verizon for official comment on the matter, but have yet to hear back. In the meantime, if you’ve been itching to give Mountain View’s brand of mobile payment a go, hit up the source link below and let us know how you fare in the comments.

If you’re the sort to get a little too adventurous with CyanogenMod 10 or other custom ROMs, Google just gave you a crutch. Android 4.1.1 factory images are now available for every Nexus device that can currently get a taste of Jelly Bean: the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and the expected Nexus 7. While it’s not a complete safety net, the gesture will let dedicated modders flash their phones and tablets knowing that they can almost always jump back to the pure OS if someone’s definition of “alpha build” is a little too rough. CDMA users are unfortunately left out of the loop; let’s just hope they’re brought up to speed before too long.
