Apple adds Samsung’s Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to ongoing patent lawsuit

The Apple v. Samsung patent war that will seemingly never end has taken another turn today, as Apple is asking the court to add newer Samsung Galaxy hardware, including the Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1 to its complaint against the Galaxy Nexus and other related devices. If you thought updated software and designs would keep these newer smartphones and tablets out of the fight — you were wrong. Just to help you keep things straight, remember this is a separate case from the one that ended exactly a week ago with a decision in Apple’s favor to the tune of more than $1 billion in damages.

At issue here are eight of Apple’s utility patents that it says Samsung has infringed upon. The headliner patents at issue are ‘721 which covers slide to unlock, and ‘604, which could apply to the universal search feature Samsung has been pulling from its phones recently. Another familiar entry is the ‘647 patent Apple slapped HTC with in 2010, which has a vague description but applies to clicking on a phone number in an email, for example, to call it. You can read the details on each and every one in the PDF linked below, we’ll be doing… anything else.

Visualized: Samsung’s human, Galaxy Note-powered taxi

Visualized Samsung's human, Galaxy Notepowered taxi

That’s the last time we take a taxi in Berlin. After a fairly harrowing journey across the city to tonight’s Samsung IFA event, we reached our destination and spotted a clearly superior mode of transportation: a fleet of pedal-powered cabs sporting Galaxy Note 10.1s in the back. Of course, we probably would have spent more time admiring the glory that is Berlin, rather than the 10-inch screen, but it’s nice tp have the option there when we need it.

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 10.1 ‘very soon’

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 101 'very soon'

It’s not as specific as we’re guessing some would like, but Samsung confirmed during its IFA 2012 keynote today that a Jelly Bean update is coming to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 “very soon.” That is at least a bit more encouraging than the “later this year” that we last heard for the Note 10.1, and follows a leak of an official GS3 Jelly Bean build earlier this month. The original Galaxy Note wasn’t specifically mentioned on stage, but it did make an appearance on the company’s Jelly Bean slide, so we’d assume an update for it is coming as well, if not necessarily “very soon.”

Samsung Galaxy Note II getting redesigned S Pen with rubber tip, improved grip

Samsung Galaxy Note II getting redesigned S Pen with rubber tip, improved grip, same 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity

Today at its IFA 2012 press conference, Samsung confirmed that the newly announced Galaxy Note II will make use of a new, redesigned S Pen. In addition to boasting an improved 8mm grip, it has a rubber tip. It also recognizes 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is already true of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Other than that, Samsung hasn’t shared much in the way of specifics, but if you’d like to see video of the new Note in action, we can at least offer that.

Live from Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2012!

Judging from the rows and rows of Samsung flag lining the outside the Messe Berlin, the company’s planning another big show for this year’s IFA. This time last year, the company took the wraps off of its industry-shaping Galaxy Note, and if all goes according to plan, there’s seems a fairly significant chance that 2012 will see a sequel. And, knowing Samsung, that’s not all we’re in store for today. Hold on tight and join us after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to the US ‘later in 2012’

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 coming to the US later in 2012

If you’re waiting for the US release date for Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, we’re sorry to say that you won’t find one today. While this version of the form-defining phablet is destined for European, Asian and Middle Eastern-markets, the company promises a version of the device will hit American shores before the end of 2012, as you can see in the quote we’ve got from the company below.

“Samsung Mobile is planning a U.S. version of Galaxy Note II, which will be available later in 2012. Building on the success of the original Galaxy Note, we’re confident that the Galaxy Note II continues to redefine what consumers should expect from their smartphone and delivers a powerful, innovative and unique experience. Exact timing and retail channel availability is not being announced at this time, we will continue to share information as it becomes available.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: hands-on with the new S Pen-toting phablet (video)

Samsung Galaxy Note II handson video

Samsung’s got a handful of announcements to offer its mobile fans at IFA this year, and it’s started big: with the Galaxy Note II. The new Android device packs a larger 5.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 16:9 screen, but still falls roughly within the same generous footprint of its predecessor. A year on, we’ve now got a more powerful SoC, up from a dual-core 1.4GHz processor to a new quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos chipset (yes, that’s even faster than the one found in the Galaxy S III) and Android Jelly Bean right out of the box. Samsung’s putting a lot of focus on making the most of all that screen space and S Pen functionality. We got our hands (both of them) on the Galaxy Note II just a few hours early, so after the gallery, skip past the break for our first impressions.

Samsung adds more S-Pen friendly apps for British Galaxy Note 10.1 users

Samsung adds more SPen friendly apps for the Galaxy Note 101

Samsung’s gifting British Galaxy Note 10.1 users with some new, free, S-Pen apps for when playing “Eat up Martha” in S-Note stops being fun. Drop the Beat lets you produce your own banging dance tracks, while kiddy-titles Spot the Difference and Where Is It will keep your younglings quiet for five minutes. You’ll also get Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, although we’re not sure how you’ll replicate that Fast and Furious action with a four-point-five-inch plastic pencil. Head on down to the source link to start swelling your collection.

iZettle comes to Android for a few lucky Swedish Samsung owners

iZettle comes to Android

Square gets most of the media hype, but without an international presence, would-be competitors have had a chance to carve out their own niches in the mobile commerce market. Sweden’s iZettle has managed to make quite a splash in its homeland, and it’s expanding its mini empire by finally bringing its wares to Android — albeit in an extremely limited form. Unless you’ve got a Galaxy S III, S II or a Note then iZettle still isn’t for you and with availability in a single Nordic country, it might seem more accurate to describe Android support as being in beta, but the company has ditched the testing tag regardless. Rest assured, however, it is actively working to add more handsets and export the app beyond its particle board-loving borders.

Samsung teases Galaxy Note II, ‘a small and light thing’ (video)

Image

We’re just over two weeks away from Samsung unpacking its latest phone, with the company already pointing to a Galaxy Note successor. Well, here’s something to whet the appetites of anyone into big phones — Samsung’s new video teaser for its IFA show. Director Wim Wenders is involved in the trailer, talking up “all the things you can do in the blink on the eye, on such a small and light thing.” We also get a glimpse of the new stylus — but not much else. Take a look for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Timothy]
