Nintendo Game Boy Officially Turns 25 Years Old

Nintendo Game Boy Officially Turns 25 Years OldThe Nintendo Game Boy is a classic piece of gaming equipment. Every kid wanted it back in the day, and if you had one, you were pretty much the most popular kid in school. Well if you have fond memories of the device, we should note that the Nintendo Game Boy is officially 25 years old. Yup, you read that right, if you had fond memories of playing with the handheld console, there’s a good chance that this post might make you feel a bit old.

The handheld console was originally launched on the 21st of April 1989 and basically revolutionized the handheld gaming industry, much like how Sony’s Walkman changed the portable music landscape, and how the iPod changed the way we consumed music digitally. Safe to say it was a classic. The Game Boy went on to evolve and saw upgrades over the years, such as the Game Boy Pocket that introduced a much slimmer profile, and also sharper images.

Later on Nintendo also introduced the Game Boy Color which brought color the Game Boy games, an area in which Sega’s Game Gear had before Nintendo. Later versions of the console revealed the Game Boy Advance and the Game Boy Advance SP, before Nintendo officially discontinued it in 2003.

Now the Nintendo 3DS has taken the Game Boy’s place as Nintendo’s handheld gaming console, but let’s face it, there was a certain charm about the original Game Boy that can never be replaced.

Game Boy Costume Uses Huge Cartridges to Switch Games

Back in 2009 we found a Game Boy costume that played Tetris. It had working buttons and had a laptop running an emulator. It turns out that anonymous cosplayer kept on working on his hack and showed off its latest version at the 2014 Ohayocon.

Aside from its much improved case, the costume can now switch games, which is done by inserting equally huge cartridge replicas into a slot… somewhere in the back of the costume. Seriously though Redditor Dacaris says the cosplayer told him that the whole thing is controlled by a Raspberry Pi. The cartridges “had slots cut in them so they would press different button combinations when they were inserted, and those told the raspberry pi which game to load.” Here’s a video of the costume shared by YouTuber MidgarZolom:

I bet he calls his jewels Select and Start.

Game Boy Screen Shows Off Twitter Feed (It’s A Fake!)

Game Boy Screen Shows Off Twitter Feed (It’s A Fake!)For those of you who grew up in the 1990s, I am quite sure that you are familiar not only with the NES, SNES, Sega MegaDrive, but also with the hugely popular portable console from Nintendo that is known as the Game Boy. The Game Boy provided me with countless hours of fun, and who knew that four AA batteries could deliver so much enjoyment? There was nothing quite like having the ability to play Mario wherever you go, not to mention collect all 50 Pokémon (yeah, there were that few back in the day), but who would have thought that this 8-bit machine that could would actually be able to display a Twitter feed?

Firebox has a special offering to gamers in the UK who grew up in the 80s. The store is selling soaps that look just like the cartridges of Nintendo’s classic consoles, the SNES and the Game Boy. They even have cover art on them, although it looks like those are just made of paper and will quickly melt off the soaps.
