Game Boy Color External Hard Drive: 8 Trillion Bit Handheld

The Game Boy Color can only store a few megabytes of data in its memory, but these carcasses of the handheld contain nothing but a 1TB hard drive. They can probably store all of the games that have ever been released for all of Nintendo’s handhelds and still have some room left for your homework.

Jason Roach sells these colorful external hard drives on his Etsy shop 8-Bit Memory. He usually fits them with a 1TB USB 3.0 Western Digital hard drive, but he says you can also ask for a 500GB drive. He can also look for other colors if you don’t want the ones he’s offering. If you want to go older school, then get the Game Boy hard drive. It also has a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. All of the hard drives are powered via USB so you won’t need an adapter for them.

Head to 8-Bit Memory on Etsy to order the drives. The Game Boy drive sells for $140 (USD), while the Game Boy Color drives go for $160 each. Jason is also selling a couple of slightly damaged Game Boy Color drives for $10 less.

Gameboo: The SNES Portable We Never Had

Nope, the picture below isn’t Photoshopped. The Game Boy below actually has four face buttons. It’s also not entirely a Game Boy anymore, because there’s a Dingoo A330 inside, hence the name Gameboo. Aside from playing Game Boy games, it can also play GBA, NES, SNES games and more.

YouTuber lxl15 made Gameboo for a friend. It took him a total of 8 months, and the labor of love really shows. Lxl15 tried his best to make the Gameboo look like a stock Game Boy. For instance, the extra face buttons are also Game Boy buttons. He also turned the dials that controlled the Game Boy’s contrast and volume into left and right shoulder buttons, and re-purposed the extension connector port into a Mini USB port. Lxl15 also hollowed out the battery compartment and a spare cartridge to retain the handheld’s look while opening up space inside for electronics.

Just like the Dingoo A330, the Gameboo has an AV out and support for a wireless controller. In other words, it can be used as a retro home console as well!

Head to my good friend lxl15′s blog for the details on the awesome mod of my buddy. I mean me and lxl15 close like Bethlehem and Nazareth. You might as well call me lxl14.

The Gameboo Game Boy Mod May Be The Ultimate Portable Gaming Device

We don’t know what’s up with you old-school gaming modders and your fascination with the Nintendo Game Boy as not too long ago, we saw the classic handheld combined with a Galaxy Nexus and Wii Remote innards. Now, another modder has used the Game Boy’s body to create quite the ultimate portable gaming device we’ve seen in a long time.

Dubbed “The Gameboo,” the modification completely replaces the innards of the Game Boy and replaces it with a Dingo Technologies A330. The Gameboo was painstakingly worked on for eight months, but the results, which you can see in the video embedded above, are amazing.

Game Boy Becomes a Controller for Android Phone Games

If you love being able to emulate classic games on your phone but hate the clumsy touchscreen controls, there is yet another answer. Look to the ghost of gaming past and hack a Game Boy to use it as a controller on your Android phone.

It just takes some technical know-how, a few hours when you aren’t playing games, and a spare Game Boy from yesteryear. Just like that, you’ll have a mount for your Android phone that is also a controller. And it looks pretty good too.

Instructables contributor alpinedelta is set to become a geek folk hero with this mod, since we are all bugged by crappy controller options. His mod combines the case of an old Game Boy, the guts of a Wiimote and an Android phone case. Check out the video and see if you want to attempt this for yourself.

While the demo shows off a SNES emulator, it might be fun to play some old Game Boy games on it too.

Cardboard Nintendo Game Boy Color Has One Color: Cardboard

Oh man. I have always wanted a hug a giant Game Boy Color made out of cardboard. And that geeky chick in the pic created one. MaboroshiTira made this giant non-handheld by taking a bunch of boxes, chopping them up and turning them a larger-than-life nostalgic gaming device.

You can push all of the buttons, the power switch moves, and the volume dial turns. The Game Boy Cardboard. If only Nintendo had thought to offer this up to fans. In this economy it would be a hit – or at least it’d have a solid profit margin.

MaboroshiTira is astounded by all of the attention this cool creation is getting her: “Oh my gosh guys…I am literally in tears. I never thought this would get so many views and favorites. And even end up on the front page (of DeviantArt)! Thank you all so much. I can’t even. This is really something i never thought would happen.”

I would say it is well earned. Great job, MT. Now when is the cardboard Wii U coming out?

Diablo on Game Boy Color was nearly realized

The Game Boy Color is certainly one handheld console that captured the imagination of millions of kids worldwide, and it had quite a run that lasted for many a year. Now that we are in 2012, it is interesting to read about what some of the other game developers had in mind – such as Blizzard biographer David Craddock stepping forward to say that at one point in time in the past, there was a vision to bring Diablo over to the Nintendo Game Boy Color, where the title will aptly be called Diablo Junior. The game would be “inspired” by Pokemon, where players were able to exchange exclusive characters with among each other. Development on Diablo Junior kicked off at approximately the same time as Diablo 2, where a Game Boy Advance version was also in the pipeline.

The thing is, Diablo Junior never really made it out to the mainstream because of the high production costs that Blizzard cited when it came to developing handheld games. I am not so certain about that statement, as it is very possible should Diablo Junior be a hit, they would have stumbled upon a goldmine to recoup their development costs and then some.
