Game of Thrones Collectible Figures: A Song of Ice and Vinyl

I’m a huge fan of Game of Thrones. As a matter of fact, I’m going back and watching all 20 episodes again with my wife, now that she’s convinced that it’s an awesome show as well. But when I think about the series, it conjures up visions of backstabbing, blood, gore, violence, and sex. What I don’t think of are cute desk toys. That said, I still want all of these.

The guys over at POP! have come out with a series of big-headed, bug-eyed versions of some of the main characters from HBO’s award-winning fantasy-drama. Their goofy disproportionate, squared-off heads actually kind of remind me of Betty Boop for some reason.

game of thrones tyrion lannister 150x150
game of thrones the hound 150x150
game of thrones whitewalker 150x150

The series includes 3-3/4 inch-tall vinyl figures of Daenerys Targaryn (with a tiny dragon, of course), Ned Stark (complete with head), Khal Drogo (infected wound sold separately), Tyrion Lannister (surprisingly the same height as all the other figures), the Hound (complete with sibling-induced facial burns), and a White Walker (I thought they didn’t exist.)  Though I really was hoping for a King Joffrey that I could throw darts at, or a Viserys Targaryen with a custom-fit gold crown.

The whole gang is coming out this December so you should be able to have them in your hands in time for the holidays. Winter is coming, after all. Pre-order them now over at Entertainment Earth for $9.99 (USD) each.

HBO boss Bill Nelson announces retirement, Richard Plepler will assume the throne

HBO's CEO Bill Nelson announces retirement, Richard Plepler will assume the throne

After five years as king of the HBO castle, CEO Bill Nelson has announced he’s leaving the company to retire at the end of the year. During Nelson’s near 30-year career, he bounced through a string of corporate roles before becoming top dog in 2007, subsequently overseeing the launch of the digital service HBO Go. While it might be impossible to replace such a commanding moustache, we’re sure current co-President Richard Plepler will do a fine job when he takes the helm. He’s responsible (in part) for bringing shows like Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones to our screens, after all. Enjoy your retirement Bill, and be glad you left on your own terms — some aren’t so fortunate.

All the Special Effects of Game of Thrones Are Still So Unbelievably Real [Video]

After seeing the reel of special effects used for Game of Thrones Season One, I was on high alert to see if anything looked off or weird in Season Two. Could I spot the hidden CGI? Nope. I couldn’t find anything. Turns out, pretty much everything was CGI’d and it’s amazing because it all feels so damn real. More »

Game of Thrones Risk Board Game: World Domination is Coming

This beautiful Game of Thrones version of Risk was created by Fay Helfer. The detail is amazing and the set comes complete with pyrography artwork and a detailed, carved map of Westeros. It was made as a commission for Matt B, who is now the envy of the interwebs.

The surface of the board and the case are apparently made from wood that was hand carved and burned. Westeros was already a beautiful 2D map, but this this game is even more lovely and blows that out of the water. There are also fabric pouches included in the box which hold the game pieces.

If only I had the extra money, I would commission one for myself. You did a great job Fay.

HBO and Blinkbox offer second season of Game of Thrones online before DVD / Blu-ray release in UK

Folks in North America may have to wait for the upcoming DVD or Blu-ray release to purchase the second season of Game of Thrones, but those in the UK have another option thanks to a new partnership between HBO UK and the Tesco-owned Blinkbox video-on-demand service. That deal sees both the second seasons of Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire making their debut on the online service well ahead of their traditional home video releases, where they’re also available alongside the first seasons of each show and a number of other newly available HBO titles. In the case of Game of Thrones, you’ll pay £17.99 (or about $30) for each season or £1.79 (or $3) for individual episodes, and you can choose to either download or stream the episodes and view them on a variety of devices (including game consoles, the iPad and some smart TVs).

Game of Thrones White Walker Cake, Eat It with an Obsidian Fork

This Game of Thrones White Walker cake looks great. Winter is coming and it looks yummy. It’s yet another awesome cake by JB Cada and his partner Stephanie Santos from The Regali Kitchen.
white walker cake
This cake is nicely detailed and says “Night gathers and now the party begins.”  If you follow the books to the letter then you will need to sound the horn three times for the warning of White Walkers. Then it’s safe to dig in. But you will obviously need obsidian cake cutters to eat that White Walker on top.

I bet Samwell Tarley and Jon Snow wish they had cakes like this on the wall. I wish I had one too. They did a fantastic job on this one as always.

WesterosCraft: A Game of Blocks

Minecraft players are experts at pulling off what I call the Reverse Field of Dreams: “If you come, they will build it.” Thus the existence of WesterosCraft – a Minecraft server that contains a replica of the fictional continent Westeros – should surprise no one. But it should delight every Game of Thrones fan.

That is of course, the Wall, home and hell to the Night’s Watch. Take a tour of some of the other places in the video below:

I know what you’re thinking. Here you go:

You’re welcome. There are more videos at the WesterosCraft playlist on YouTube. The making-of time lapse videos are particularly impressive.

Game of Thrones Replica Iron Throne

I don’t know as to whether you have been swept up by the craze known as Game of Thrones, but if you have answered in the affirmative and have some serious coin left in your bank account to spend, how about checking out this particular purchase which might not be pleasing to your other half when he or she finds out that you blew a whopping £20,000 on the Game of Thrones Replica Iron Throne?

Fictionally, it was forged from a thousand enemy swords in the fiery breath of the dragon Balerion the Black Dread, where the Iron Throne is one imposing sight, being the seat of power in King’s Landing. Nice to know that a replica is now available for sale, although it might just do nothing much other than to reinforce the false notion that you are the king of your own castle, never mind that the proverb should be updated to reflect the cramped apartments that many of us live in these days.

This is a unique purchase that is guaranteed to be a conversation starter, as it was specially crafted by robots, using fibreglass and fire rated resin. Such an incredible work of art will obviously be a highly limited version, so do not wait, as “Winter is coming.” Sorry, that bit was hard to resist.
