55% of developers currently making games for mobile devices

Smartphones and tablets are currently the most popular devices for game developers to release games on. It shouldn’t be surprising given how many people own smartphones and/or tablets, and want mobile games to play in order to pass the time. The Game Developers Conference polled over 2,500 North American game developers and asked them which platforms they’re currently developing their games on.

58 percent of developers to release next games on mobile devices

55% of the game developers said that they’re currently developing games for both smartphones/tablets. 48% are currently developing games for PCs and Macs. 13.2% are currently developing a game for the Xbox 360. 13% are currently developing a game for the PlayStation 3. Only 4.6% are working on a game for the Wii U. 4.2% are making a game for the PlayStation Vita, and finally only 2% of developers are currently developing games for the Nintendo 3DS.

58% of developers are planning on releasing their next game on smartphones/tablets, 49% are releasing their next game onto PCs/Macs, 14% are releasing their next game for the Xbox 360, 12.4% are releasing their next game for the PlayStation 3, 6.4% are planning to release their next game to the Wii U, 5% are releasing their next game for the PlayStation Vita, and only 2.8% are planning on releasing their next game to the Nintendo 3DS.

Mobile gaming is rapidly rising and developers find that the smartphone/tablet platform would be the most profitable one to develop for. Games are relatively cheap on mobile devices (with the highest I’ve purchased being Final Fantasy Dimensions with its $19.99 price tag), making them more easily accessible than the $60-ish priced console games. It also helps that there are really well-made mobile games that feature beautiful graphics, such as the ones being released for the NVIDIA Tegra 4.

NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD demos Burn Zombie Burn

NVIDIA gives us a sneak peak at one of their “5 games optimized for the Tegra 4” by demoing it on their portable gaming device, Project SHIELD. The game, titled Burn Zombie Burn, is a title that originated from the PlayStation 3 and is now finding its way onto mobile devices. The game developer, Tick Tock Games, wanted to delve into the mobile gaming industry, and the NVIDIA Tegra 4 allows them to do that without needing to sacrifice quality. In fact, the NVIDIA Tegra 4 helps them add quality to their thrilling, zombie apocalypse game.

Burn Zombie Burn demoed on NVIDIA's Project Shield

Burn Zombie Burn is a survival game where you fight endless waves of zombies, with each wave (of course) being harder than the previous. The goal is to reach the highest score you possibly can. You have a hefty arsenal of weapons that you can use to take out the hordes of zombies. From bats to machines guns to chainsaws to nukes, you have all the firepower you need to ensure your self-preservation.

NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD is NVIDIA’s own portable, Android gaming device running on their latest-gen processor, the Tegra 4. Project SHIELD is capable of running PC-quality like games and is set to revolutionize the mobile gaming industry. It was one of the highlights of the Consumer Electronic Show this year, and it has many people anticipating its Q2 launch. The device features a 5-inch LCD display and promises around 5-10 hours of gameplay per charge. The screen is attached to a console-like gamepad that should make gameplay feel more easier and familiar. Project SHIELD’s UI runs on Android Jelly Bean and there’s a ‘Tegra’ button on the physical controller that will bring you to your games menu.

Burn Zombie Burn is an intriguing title and one that should keep you entertained for hours. One thing that’s pretty noticeable is the FPS lag that happens occasionally during the gameplay demo. Hopefully NVIDIA or Tick Tock Games figures out the reasoning behind that before they officially launch the game. We don’t have an official release date, or the official pricing on the Project SHIELD, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do. For the latest news on NVIDIA, check out our NVIDIA Tegra Hub.

Google unveils mobile device-controlled Super Sync Sports game

Google has unveiled a Chrome Experiment called Super Sync Sports, a side-scrolling game with colorful animation and simple, yet addictive sub-games: racing, cycling, and swimming. Instead of using your computer’s controls to play, however, gamers sync and use their mobile device, using it as a controller, hence the game’s name. You can check out a video of the game in action, as well as instruction on how to play yourself.

hand

A tablet or a smartphone can be used, with a smartphone arguably being easier to use than a larger tablet. Syncing is achieved by using Chrome for Mobile/iPhone, so users will need to download and install it in order to play. Once installed, syncing the controller with the game is simple and straight forward. Up to four players can sync their devices and compete with each other.

Gamers need to go to chrome.com/supersyncsports on their laptop or desktop to pull up the game. After doing that, select a game, then turn on your mobile device. From Chrome for Mobile, visit g.co/super and enter the code that appears on the computer screen. By doing this, the mobile device will sync with the browser game and begin to function as a controller.

After syncing, the gamers can then select an athlete to play as from the mobile device, then control the character via gestures on the touchscreen. Super Sync Sports works with Chrome version 15 and higher, Android 4 and higher, and iOS 4.3 and later. The game utilized HTML5, CSS3, and Canvas.

BioShock Infinite Season Pass to Offer Discounted DLC Packs

Of all the games are launching early in 2013, BioShock Infinite is certainly one of the most anticipated. The game will see players exploring the floating city of Columbia and fighting against baddies as they strive to rescue the mysterious time-and-space-tearing Elizabeth. The game will launch on March 26, which is only a few weeks away now. This game was originally expected to launch last year but was delayed.

Irrational and 2K Games have now announced that along with the launch of the video game on March 26 will also come the launch of a Season Pass that will get players all three add-on content packs currently in development for one low price.

The Season Pass will sell for $19.99(USD) for PS3 and PC gamers, while Xbox 360 gamers will pay 1600 Microsoft Points ($20). Buying the Season Pass will save customers about 30% compared to buying the add-on packs individually.

Gamers who pre-order the Season Pass will also get four pieces of exclusive gear, a machine gun damage upgrade, a pistol damage upgrade, gold skin for both weapons, and five infusion bottles. Those infusion bottles help players increase health, shield duration, and vigors.

Neo Geo X additional game cart, system update, travel case and ‘Rocket’ cable slated for April launch

Neo Geo X additional game cart, system update, travel case and 'Rocket' cable slated for April launch

You’ve blasted your way through the 20 games that come built into the Neo Geo X, so what’s next? Last month, rumors the handheld had been discontinued suggested that was your lot, but the truth was less worrying: the limited edition Gold bundle run had come to an end. Now, Tommo Inc has detailed the first of five additional game cartridges for the portable. Neo Geo X Classics: Volume I will add 15 titles for you to wear your thumbs down on, including Metal Slug 2, King of Fighters ’96 and Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. The cart is due to hit North America in April for an unspecified price, and those that pick one up will get a “Rocket” high-speed data transfer and charging cable gratis, as well as the Neo Geo X System Update 1.0, which we expect to hear more details on shortly. A travel case for the handheld is also in development, and is expected to be released the same month. Hit up the PR to see the full games list for Volume I, although chances are, some of you are playing them already.

DRIVE CLUB revealed at Sony’s press event

Sony and Evolution Studios have collaborated to bring you a new, beautiful, team-based driving game. The game has been in development for over 10 years. The game emphasisizes team-play and you’ll be a part of a driving club (that you can join or form with your friends) that competes with other driving clubs. The game allows you to drive beautiful cars that have been designed to look just like their real-life counterparts.

DRIVE CLUB revealed at Sony's Press Event

This game isn’t just your average racing game. Each track will be prepped with a variety of fun and engaging challenges. You can choose whatever weather you want and whatever time of day you want to race in. Every level is promised to be a new, and fun experience. Evolution Studios also emphasized that you will have 24/7 untethered access to your club. Races will be asynchronized and played in real-time.

There’s the first-person perspective that makes you feel like you’re actually driving the car. It shows “you” opening the car door, getting behind the wheel, fastening your seat belt, and taking off in your expensive, possibly foreign-engineered sports car. All of the cars are designed to look exactly like the real-life counterpart its supposed to resemble. The folks at Evolution Studios visited car manufacturers frequently just to make sure they have every detail right. While the cars may be digital, they’ll look very real and very much like they do in reality.

DRIVE CLUB will be one of the PlayStation 4 games that will fully emphasize social game play. Sony wants to make the PlayStation Network one of the most powerful social gaming networks around. This game will be a dream-come-true for car fanatics, and a great game to play with your friends. Check out the other games, and PlayStation 4 features, introduced today at Sony’s press event in the timeline below.

Activision is pulling away from licensed games

Activision has announced that they will be moving away from the licensed games, meaning there will be fewer games from the James Bond, Transformers, Men in Black, and Spider-Man series. Rumor has it that James Bond will be seeing its end really soon. Activision is following the same move that Electronics Arts made back in 2008. EA Games president, Frank Gibeau, said at the time that “the days of licensed-based, 75-rated games copies are dead like the dinosaur.”

Activision is pulling away from licensed games

Along with its move to back away from licensed games, Activision will also be laying off 30 people from its company. That’s about 0.5% of the company, and those that are being let go will be offered “outplacement counseling services” to help them find a new job. Activision made it clear though that the cuts will barely affect Treyarch. The company says that there will be “minimal reduction in staff to better align our development talent against the needs of DLC development.”

Like EA Games, Activision feels that the licensed-games industry isn’t bringing in enough revenue to make the projects worth it. Due to the high-costs of making the movie-based games, and the decreasing demand for them, the games started becoming more trouble than they were worth. Activision will still be releasing a few licensed-based games this year, including games based on The Walking Dead, Deadpool, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I can see why companies are beginning to stray way from licensed games. The licensed games as of late aren’t as amazing as games from the older generation (does anyone remember Goldeneye 007?). Even 007 Legends, which was highly anticipated, turned out to be a let down, which is why the James Bond series might be the first of the licensed games to get the axe.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance PR stunt involves slicing up a police car

France has just witnessed a PR stunt for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance that involved slicing up a police car. Both Platimum games and Konami France came up with the idea to grab people’s attention. The police car had the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance logo as well as Platinum’s logo just to make sure that everyone knew that it was just a PR stunt; not a threat. This is certainly much more entertaining than a press release.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance PR stunt involves slicing up a police car 2

The police car was cross-diagonally slashed, ripping clean through the car’s core components. It represents some of the fun things you’re able to do as Raiden in Metal Gear Rising. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance focuses on Raiden, who’s a cyborg ninja, and his fight against Desperado Enterprises, a private military company. This game takes place 4 years after the end of Metal Gear Solid 4. Rising isn’t a stealthy game like the previous Metal Gear Solid titles. It’s all action-based, where you take Raiden and his sword-wielding skills and you go about slicing and dicing enemies (or vehicles).

The car was signed by both Hideo Kojima — producer of almost all of the Metal Gear Solid games, and Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment — and Yoji Shinkawa, who worked on many Konami titles like Metal Gear Solid 2-4, Zone of the Enders, and of course Metal Gear Rising.

The sliced-up police car sold for 1610 euros, or $2100 on eBay. The car is one item, along with many others, that are being auctioned off by Konami France. All of the proceeds from the auctions will be donated to UNICEF Paris. Up for sale right now is a copy of Metal Gear Rising for the PlayStation 3 that’s been signed by Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa. Right now, the going price is 106.00 euros, or around $141. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was released in the U.S. today, and will be released in France on the 22nd.
