NRA Releases Shooting Game

nra practice range app NRA Releases Shooting GameThe National Rifle Association (NRA), much to the chagrin of some, has introduced a shooting game weeks after it panned first person shooter (FPS) games. It was just a month ago that the NRA joined the rest of the world in solidarity by expressing their sorrow after the shooting tragedy which occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, and there was speculation as to whether video games containing violent imagery were to be blamed.

NRA stated then, “There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people. Through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. Then there’s the blood-soaked slasher films like ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Natural Born Killers’ that are aired like propaganda loops on ‘Splatterdays’ and every day, and a thousand music videos that portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life. And then they have the nerve to call it ‘entertainment’… Isn’t fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography?”

Funny how the NRA has then released a shooting game so soon after making a strongly worded statement, and while the game is free, it isn’t going to be a worldwide phenomenon like Angry Birds, as it functions as a tilt and click 3D shooter.

Not Pac-Man Will Spin You Right Round, Like a Record Baby

So now that you’ve finally memorized all of the patterns to beat Pac-Man, what are you going to do with all of that spare time on your hands? Well, you could move on to Ms. Pac-Man, I suppose, or you could try this game, which starts out looking like Pac-Man, but then quickly degrades into insanity.

not pac man

Created by the appropriately-named Stabyourself.net, Not Pac-Man is just that. NOT Pac-Man. On the surface it looks like the classic arcade game, but as soon as you start playing it you realize something is amiss. Instead of you moving Pac-Man, you move the maze with your mouse or keyboard, causing the ghosts and Pac-Man to go tumbling through the spinning maze. The objectives are the same as the original, but the gameplay is completely different. It’s sort of like one of those labyrinth games, but with Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde instead of ball bearings. Confused? Here, this should set you straight:

It’s definitely wacky, but infinitely more playable than Zero-G Pac-Man at least. So if you’re ready to try out Not Pac-Man for yourself, head on over to Stabyourself.net and download it now – where it’s available for not just Windows, but for Mac and Linux too. Wocka! Wocka! Wocka!

Literal Go Fish Playing Cards Teach You to Cook Actual Fish

The card game “Go Fish” isn’t named that way because it has anything to do with fish. Its name is inspired by the act of “fishing” another card out of the pile when the other player doesn’t have the card you’re looking for. But in Iceland, Go Fish is literally about fish – at least if you buy this deck.

literal go fish cards 1

Artist Stefán Pétur Sólveigarson created this quirky deck of cards that’s been covered with images of a diverse range of aquatic species. And the cards don’t just teach you to identify the fish, it teaches you how to prepare and cook them. You know the old saying “give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day; teach him to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime?” That’s what these cards are all about – or at least teaching him how to cook fish.

You can reel in a deck of these literal Go Fish cards over at the Reykjavik Corner Store for $14.90(USD).

Unlike the cake, Portal on a TI calculator is not a lie (video)

DNP Play Portal on a TI calculator, amaze your math class

People have been using scientific calculators as math class distractions for years, from gunning down Nazis in Wolfenstein to hunting demons in Doom. But our jaws dropped in amazement when we discovered that an enterprising fellow that goes by Builderboy from Omnimaga has ported over Portal to the humble number cruncher. Dubbed Portal Prelude, the monochrome game is built only for the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus series of graphic calculators and was based on the Flash clone of the popular video game due to the two-dimensional nature of the platform. Sure, it’s not as engaging as the genuine article, but seeing as it’s the only portable version of the game we know of, we’ll take it. Indeed, you can go ahead and download it right now if you have a compatible calculator. In the meantime, we’re eagerly waiting to see how this could be rejiggered to take advantage of the color display of the TI-84+. You can take a peek at the demo video of Portal Prelude after the break.

iPad Foosball Table: He Shoots, He Scores

I’ve always enjoyed a good game of foosball – but full-size foosball tables are pretty expensive so I’ve never had one in my house. Here’s a fun way to play foosball with your pals for the low low price of $100 (plus an iPad.)

ipad foosball

Created by New Potato Technologies, the iPad Foosball table plays just like an actual foosball table, but with virtual players on the screen of your iPad. It works along with an iOS game called Classic Match Foosball, and the 2-axis control levers work just like the real deal. Here’s a little video footage of the game in action:

You can get your hands on the Classic Match iPad Foosball Table over at New Potato Technologies for $99.99(USD). It’s compatible with all iPads with the 30-pin dock connector, so if you’ve got the iPad 4, you’ll just have to head down to the local pub if you want to play foosball. Or you could just buy one of these.

GAME sells Steam vouchers in its UK stores, sees no dramatic tension in that whatsoever

GAME starts selling Steam Wallet Codes in its UK retail stores

GAME is certainly up for trying new things after getting a second chance at life, and today it becomes the first store in the UK to offer Steam Wallet Codes for purchase. You can buy £5, £10, £20 or £50’s worth, and until December 7th, you can get a 33 percent bump in trade-in value, should you put the credit towards codes. Customers can also browse the entire Steam catalog on tablets dotted around the shop floor. While the vouchers will obviously make good gifts this holiday, and also appeal to those who don’t want Steam knowing their card details, we’re not sure how smart a move this is. We imagine there are still a few keyboard-and-mouse gamers out there who don’t use Steam, but once GAME shows them the light, will they ever set foot in a physical game store again?

Peter Molyneux’s 22cans pitching Populous-esque project on Kickstarter, ‘Godus’

Peter Molyneux's 22cans pitching Populousesque project on Kickstarter, 'Godus'

Peter Molyneux, like so many of you, pines for the glory days of the studio he co-founded over 15 years ago, Bullfrog Productions. His new studio, 22cans, today announced launched its first initiative aimed at recreating those glory days, with “Godus” — a Kickstarter project to “recreate the god game.” Of course, Molyneux and Bullfrog were partially responsible for the original invention as well, with PC classic Populous. Like with Populous, you’ll control a virtual world and its people, building up (or tearing down) their society as you see fit; it seems the “re-invention” bit comes in the form of multiplayer and mobile play. The nascent studio of game industry vets is hoping for a seven to nine month turnaround on the project, post-Kickstarter (should it pass the £450,000 goal, that is), and it’s planned for launch on “PC and mobile devices.”

In the (hilarious) video 22cans included in its Kickstarter, the company revealed that its first title cum social experiment, Curiosity, already has “about 2 million downloads almost,” which we’d certainly call a success. The ever self-aware Molyneux also notes in the video that, “I don’t want to promise anything, I just want to deliver the glory of the old days in the new format of today’s world.” Even when he’s trying not to promise something, he just can’t help himself, eh? See for yourself below the break.

Man-Eater Game Encourages Urban Commuters to Chomp on Pedestrians

Nobody wants to be called a man-eater. People have been singing about them for years but it’s hardly a compliment to be called one. But a man-eater is what you have to become if you want to top the high-score charts in this urban game aptly called Man-Eater.

Man EaterDaniel Disselkoen played with the man-eater concept and came up with the game for his graduation project at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

To play, the people in the tram simply have to close one eye and adjust their position relative to that of the man-eater that’s stuck onto the window of the tram. As the vehicle moves, they must then try to ‘eat’ as many pedestrian heads as they can.

Daniel explains the reasoning behind the game: “Why would you look out the window with curiosity when there is no reason to expect anything new?”

Man-Eater is pretty simple but I think it can make people want to look out the window more.

Google wants to change your reality with Ingress, a mobile game played out in real life

Google wants to change your reality with Ingress, a mobile game played out in real life

All the viral ads courtesy of Niantic Labs told us something was coming, and now its here — an alternate reality game from Google called Ingress. The theme is one of worldwide mind control, and it’ll be played out in real life, where you’ll be a part of one of two teams which either embrace or fight “the power” — The Enlightened or The Resistance, respectively. With a companion mobile app installed, you’ll venture out into the world collecting energy known as “Exotic Matter” (XM), found at real locations. This can then be spent claiming, stealing or reinforcing “portals,” which are positioned at key public places. Teamwork will be essential, as the goal is to create zones controlled by your faction, and attacking those occupied by the enemy. One team will eventually win, although this end point is expected to be a year to 18 months down the line.

John Hanke of Niantic Labs said some of the inspiration for Ingress came from JJ Abrams, and hardcore Lost fans may remember a similarly cryptic internet ‘game’ focused around the show. The Ingress app is available on Google Play today, with an iOS version in the pipe, and if you want you play, sign up at the source below to request access. Your mobile device will provide you with an overview of your local battlefield when you’re out and about, but a web client can keep you up to date on the global war while you’re sat at a computer. Check out the video and app screenshots below, and if you’re still confused as to what it’s all about — well, that’s how they want you to feel.
