Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Directors Cut brings point-and-poke adventure to Android

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Directors Cut brings point-and-poke adventure to Android

If you’re not familiar with the point-and-click classic Broken Sword, then you owe it to yourself to snatch up the Directors Cut of Shadow of the Templars. Originally released in 1996, this title is considered by many to be the pinnacle of genre, one that has fallen out of favor in the age of accelerated 3D graphics and first-person shooters. For $4, in a revamped format with touch-friendly controls, the Revolution Software-produced mystery is a no-brainer. Just don’t blame us when your day disappears as you unravel a vast conspiracy involving the Knights Templar, mimes and a terrorist clown (as if you needed more of a reason to hate those things).

Robot Will Destroy You… in Rock Paper Scissors

A couple of years ago we saw a glove that can play rock paper scissors. While that glove was smart – it learns from your patterns – it could still lose. This robot hand on the other hand will win 100% of the time, all the time. It’s not psychic, it just has insanely fast reflexes.

rock paper scissors janken robot

Scientists at the Ishikawa Oku Laboratary used a combination of a high speed camera and a fast moving robot hand, resulting in a rock paper scissors champ that recognizes what hand its opponent is going to play. In other words, the robot will wait for you to make your move before it decides what to play, but it all happens in only a few milliseconds that you won’t be able to notice it. Watch the demo below:

You know who can beat this robot? The glove. Problem solved.

Epic Games: Infinity Blade on iOS more profitable by the pound than any other game we’ve made

Infinity Blade 1 on iPad

Traditional console makers have often sworn up and down that mobile doesn’t make money for game development. That might still be true for some developers, but you’ll get a very different answer if you ask Epic Games. Co-founders Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein have collectively described the currently iOS-only, Chair-developed Infinity Blade as the “most profitable game we’ve ever made” when considering the amount of money and time invested relative to the money coming back. Yes, that includes even the Gears of War series, which most consider Epic’s primary cash cow. Sweeney, like his long-time competitor Johh Carmack at id Software, is also taken aback by the power stuffed inside the latest generation of mobile devices — a 2012 iPad is nearer the performance of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, he tells Gamasutra, and the pace is only picking up. Even more insights await in the interview with Sweeney; click below if you want a hint of what one of gaming’s pioneers has to say about where your tablets, phones and (yes) PCs are going.

Atari: celebrating 40 years on the dots

Atari celebrating 40 years on the dots

Forty years. That’s a long time in the tech industry and Atari knows it. Today it celebrates four decades in the game, and quite the tale it is. Highs, lows and everything in between, Atari has been there. As one of the most influential brands both in gaming and technology, it only seems right to take a look over the company’s history and chart some of the more significant twists in its less than straightforward journey. After the break we speak to the man that started it all and the one currently at the helm, as well as some of the many people whose lives were irreversibly changed by its influence. Happy birthday to you, Atari!

Licensed Portal 2 turret replica to arrive later this year, leave ammo at home

Licensed Portal 2 Turret replica to arrive later this year, leave bullets at home

If an enthusiast-built Portal 2 turret piques your interest, Gaming Heads’ Valve-licensed miniature replica may very well force your wallet open. Modeled using Portal 2‘s in-game assets and cast in “high quality poly-stone,” these mini-turrets aim to intimidate intruders with a motion activated light-up eye. In addition to the stoically silent basic model, the company’s offering an exclusive edition, which plays sounds and voice samples from the game. Only 1,100 of these hand painted facsimiles will be produced (350 with sound, 750 without), but the company notes that other figures based on the adorable death machines are in the works. Pre-orders have already begun, so collectors will want to act fast — provided they’re ready to pony up $300-325, of course.

Angry Birds Heikki: because F1 and fort-breaking games are like peanut butter and chocolate

Rovio launches Angry Birds Heikki because Formula 1 and fortbreaking games are like peanut butter and chocolate

We’ve seen Angry Birds go into strange places both figurative and literal, but Formula 1 racing? That’s a less natural mix than a peanut butter cup. As a way of backing race driver and fellow Finland native Heikki Kovalainen, Rovio has crafted Angry Birds Heikki, a free web game themed all around its namesake’s escapades during the F1 race year. The gameplay changes are more cosmetic than functional, although that leaderboard matters a little more in spirit than it might otherwise. Perhaps the biggest draw is simply that your gameplay schedule is intrinsically linked to Heikki’s: new sections only unlock as the real-world races get near, so you’ll have an incentive to keep coming back until the Sao Paulo race determines the F1 championship on November 21st. Let’s just hope that there aren’t too many road hogs spoiling either Heikki’s fun or our own.

[Thanks, Rodrigo]
