Late Night host Jimmy Fallon gets first PS4 hands-on

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 on Wednesday in New York City, and the very next day, the company took a quick jaunt to Studio 6B in Rockefeller Center where Late Night host Jimmy Fallon was the first outsider to get hands-on with the brand-new gaming console, and to test out the system’s prowess, Fallon played a little bit of the new Killzone: Shadow Fall.

However, nothing new was unveiled during the show, and Fallon only had a look at the new DualShock 4 controller under what seemed like the tight supervision from the managing director of Guerrilla Games, Hermen Hulst, and a demo man who only let Fallon play the game for about a minute. Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson was also on scene to try out the game as well.

Chaos soon erupted, however, when both Fallon and Anderson didn’t quite have the chops necessary to blaze through all the bad guys, and the hands-on session quickly grew into a fun screaming match between the two comedians. It wasn’t quite as entertaining as, say, Conan O’Brien’s “Clueless Gamer” reviews, but it was still fun watching Fallon trying to make his way through the game.

Jimmy Fallon’s hands-on of the PlayStation 4 marks the first hands-on session of the new console. It doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but Sony says the console will be available for purchase just in time for the holiday season this year. Sony’s CEO even said that the console is still technically under development, which is why they haven’t shown the public the actual console just yet.

Rain Man’s Finally Met His Match With This Blackjack-Dealing Robot

If you thought Dustin Hoffman’s Rain Man character took a cold, calculating approach to gambling, he’s got nothing on Yaskawa Motoman Robotics’ new SDA10F blackjack dealing robot. Using a sophisticated vision system it’s even able to recognize the cards it’s dealing, so casinos could still use their standard Bicycle decks. More »

PlayStation 4 used games policy: yes and no

This week we’ve been following along with the release of the Sony PlayStation 4 and even stopped by the event to see what all the hype was about. One of the biggest questions that continues to appear is “will the PlayStation 4 play used games?” The answer seems to be yes – from what we’ve heard and what both Eurogamer and Engadget (amongst others) have heard, used games will function on the PlayStation 4. The question that’s not been answered in any real way is: “what happens if I want to sell my PlayStation 4 games?”

network-580x322

It’s ben confirmed several times over that games will be able to be purchased in physical form as well as digitally – both for some titles, in some cases. This means that there will, indeed, be opportunities for people to have a disk (Blu-Ray, as it were), play it, then pass it on to someone else with their own PlayStation 4 console. But a question remains surrounding licensing. While every major game console today (pre-PS4 and Xbox 720) is able to swap games and consoles without trouble, rumors and tips leading up to this generation’s inability to play games that weren’t licensed specifically to them continues to linger.

On the other hand, it would appear that each instance of an answer from Sony thus far has been traced back to Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s head of Worldwide Studios. Saying in one instance that “[used] PS4 games will work on [the] hardware” (via Engadget) and in another that “used games work on PS4″ (via Eurogamer), in both cases Yoshida was unable to clarify further.

What may be happening is that Sony is still in negotiations with game companies to decide whether they’re going to implement disk/console tying or not. Another possibility is that none of this used game selling/buying and using business is complicated at all, but simply that at this stage in the development of the PlayStation 4, Sony’s representation simply can’t legally comment on it.

iOS and Android game spending surpasses dedicated handhelds in Q4 2012

This may not be too much of a surprise given the improvement of games on smartphones and tablets lately, but it looks like the amount of money people are spending on iOS and Android games has actually surpassed the amount of money people are spending on dedicated handheld gaming, like the Nintendo DS and the Sony PlayStation Vita.

appannie-idc-730x433 copy

The report comes from the IDC and App Annie, who collaborated to come up with the findings. They say that during the fourth quarter of 2012, gamers spend more money on iOS and Android games than dedicated handheld devices. That’s quite impressive considering that games for handheld devices are cost considerably more than a typical smartphone game.

However, dedicated handhelds received quite a boost over the holiday season, but apparently that still wasn’t enough keep up with the Google Play store and the App Store’s strong pace. Almost 60% of spending on Android games during the fourth quarter came from the Asia-Pacific region, with Japan and Korea leading the way.

North America accounted for 40% of iOS game spending, with Asia in second, and Europe in third at 25%. As you can see from the chart above, iOS gaming is leaps and bounds ahead of Android gaming, and it almost surpasses dedicated handhelds by itself, but the small slice of Android gaming makes smartphones a more profitable avenue for games than dedicated handhelds at this point it seems.

Neo Geo X additional game cart, system update, travel case and ‘Rocket’ cable slated for April launch

Neo Geo X additional game cart, system update, travel case and 'Rocket' cable slated for April launch

You’ve blasted your way through the 20 games that come built into the Neo Geo X, so what’s next? Last month, rumors the handheld had been discontinued suggested that was your lot, but the truth was less worrying: the limited edition Gold bundle run had come to an end. Now, Tommo Inc has detailed the first of five additional game cartridges for the portable. Neo Geo X Classics: Volume I will add 15 titles for you to wear your thumbs down on, including Metal Slug 2, King of Fighters ’96 and Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. The cart is due to hit North America in April for an unspecified price, and those that pick one up will get a “Rocket” high-speed data transfer and charging cable gratis, as well as the Neo Geo X System Update 1.0, which we expect to hear more details on shortly. A travel case for the handheld is also in development, and is expected to be released the same month. Hit up the PR to see the full games list for Volume I, although chances are, some of you are playing them already.

Sony CEO says PlayStation 4 “still in development”

During Sony’s PlayStation event yesterday in New York City, the company officially announced the PlayStation 4, but they still left a lot covered up, namely the actual console. Sure, they showed off the new DualShock 4 controller, as well as a few new games coming to the PS4, but the gaming console itself was MIA. It turns out that the console is actually still under development, according to Sony CEO Jack Tretton.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Tretton explained that there were a couple of reasons why Sony didn’t show off the new console at yesterday’s event. First, Tretton explains that the console box itself really isn’t all that important anyway, since “it’s behind a cabinet or on a shelf somewhere and you spend all your time looking at the screen.” Tretton has a point, though. After all, the box itself doesn’t really matter all that much.

He also noted that the console is still under development “in terms of final specs and design,” so while they may have a PS4 console built and able to play games (as we saw yesterday during the event), it seems that Sony is still working on adding final touches to the console, and from the looks of it, the PS4 isn’t quite ready for mass production just yet.

Tretton’s answer differentiates just slightly to the answer that Sony’s Worldwide Studio president Shuhei Yoshida gave, in which he says that Sony simply didn’t want to unveil everything during that one event, and instead want to spread out announcements, which means we could hear more about the PlayStation 4 come E3 in June.

Sony exec explains PS4 no-show during yesterday’s event

Yesterday, Sony took two hours to officially announce the PlayStation 4 and show off a few games coming to the new console. They unveiled the new DualShock 4 controller, which has a touchpad, headphone jack, a dedicated share button, and redesigned joysticks, but where was the actual console? Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, explains.

Screen-Shot-2013-02-20-at-6.09.12-PM-2-580x323

Simply put, Yoshida says that they didn’t reveal everything because the company wanted “to keep something new for later. Otherwise you’d get bored.” Maybe that’s true, maybe it isn’t, but Yoshida has a point. E3 is coming up later in a few months, and that could be the time when Sony will unveil everything at that point.

As for the reasoning behind unveiling the new DualShock 4 controller, Yoshida says that the controller is “a very key idea behind the design of the PS4,” and since Sony took quite a bit of time showing off the new user interface of the PS4, it only made sense that they would show off the controller as well, especially considering it has a dedicated “Share” button on it, meant to instantly share content with friends and other gamers.

As for Sony’s plans at E3 2013 coming up in June, Yoshida told Eurogamer that announcing more PS4 details at the yearly gaming expo is “possible,” and Sony hopes to have most things “in final form” by the time E3 rolls around. However, he ultimately says that the company has “no plan or no date set for announcing these things.”

PlayStation 4 games revealed: a preview of what’s to come

PlayStation 4 games revealed a preview of what's to come

As with any gaming console, good hardware only tells half of the story. Today, Sony announced a stable of games that’ll play a large role in determining the early success of the PlayStation 4, which is set for availability this holiday season. Leading the charge will be biggies such as Killzone Shadow Fall, Bungie’s next first-person shooter known as Destiny, Diablo III and a new installment of Final Fantasy. These games will be joined by creative efforts such as Knack, a game directed by the PlayStation 4’s lead architect, Mark Cerny, Watch Dogs from Ubisoft, and Driveclub, which aims to bring team-based racing to new levels. PS4 owners can also expect exclusives such as InFamous: Second Son and The Witness. Rounding out the list — for now, anyway — is a game from Capcom with the working title of Deep Down, along with an unnamed entry from Media Molecule. While it’s clear that Sony and the development community have a number of surprises that’ve yet to be revealed, you’re invited to check out a preview of what’s to come in the following gallery.

Activision and Bungie show off Destiny for PS4

Eric Hirshberg from Activision took the stage at today’s PlayStation 4 event and is talking more about Destiny, the recently-announced fantasy title from Bungie. The game has been in the works for 10 years now, and the developer finally showed off some in-game footage at tonight’s event. Basically, Bungie’s goal with Destiny was to take the FPS and “turn it on its head again.”

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 8.00.01 PM (2)

We only saw a tiny bit of gameplay here at the event, but the developers say that Destiny will be fully compatible with the PS4, meaning that Destiny will let you enjoy the game and its content from multiple devices. Destiny will not only be coming to the PS4, but also the PS3, and there’ll be “exclusive, playable” content for just the PlayStation versions.

Bungie is calling the new game the world’s first shared-world shooter because gamers will be able to access the game and the content through the cloud via the PS4, something that will be both intriguing, as well as interesting to see in action. Overall, though, the developers didn’t reveal much about the new game, but we’ve already heard plenty within the past couple of weeks anyway.

It’s said that Destiny will arrive on the PS4 and the next-generation Xbox sometime in 2014, and since it will also be arriving on the PS3, it may also show up for the Xbox 360 as well, but that has yet to be confirmed. Since Bungie’s Halo series was so successful, Destiny may certainly have the same fate.

Sony Just Had a Two Hour PS4 Event With No PS4

After showing us tons of awesome looking games, Sony straight up denied us the console. We have specs, we’ve seen the controller, but we haven’t seen the box. Or triangle, or orb, or whatever this non-existant hardware for the PlayStation 4 might look like. Oh and no price or release date, either. We don’t even know when Sony will tell us more. Sony stoked our excitement, and there’s no way to be satisfied. What a bummer. More »
