GOG adds Mac support, kicks off with 50 games

While Good Old Games (GOG) may be playing catch-up with other gaming services like Steam, its still one of the best DRM-free digital game distributors around. Today the service officially launched support for Mac, and are offering 50 games right out of the gate that Mac users can enjoy right away.

The list of 50 Mac games that GOG released includes some great titles like Syndicate, The Witcher 2, Machinarium, and Dungeon Keeper. Plus, the service is holding a special sale to celebrate the occasion, where they’re offering six games that are 50% off and cost just $2.99 each. These include The Witcher Enhanced Edition, Crusader: No Remorse, Theme Hospital, Little Big Adventure, Postal Classic, Uncut, and Simcity 2000.

Just like Mac games on Steam, GOG games work between both Windows and Mac — no need to buy separate copies for separate operating systems. The service even has a native OS X downloader app that you can use to download GOG games onto your Mac. They’ve made the process easy and simple for both Mac and Windows users.

If you’re on a budget, GOG has got you covered as well. They’re offering eight Mac games for free, specifically for testing out their new Mac service. These include Beneath a Steel Sky, Tyrian 2000, Ultima 4 and Warsaw. Also be sure to check out the company’s Apple parody video above where they announce the “GOGbook,” and check out GOG’s complete list of Mac-compatible games.

Delta Six controller gets redesigned, Kickstarted

Delta Six controller gets redesigned, Kickstarted

Most video game controllers sporting a firearm form factor are a far cry from realistic — bright colors, odd shapes and obvious thumbsticks leave many accessories looking more like toys than weapons. Not David Kotkin’s Delta Six. This gun-shaped controller’s first prototype looked so much like a real rifle, Kotkin told us, it had to be redesigned. An orange tip, whitewashed body and a few less authentic looking components don’t make the Delta Six look any less believable as a digital soldier’s modern musket, but it does make it less likely to be mistaken for the real McCoy. The peripheral’s internals haven’t changed though — an accelerometer to help players aim and turn, cheek-sensing pressure sensors (for looking down the scope), faux-recoil and its assortment of modular components are still all on target.

Like all budding hardware projects these days, the Delta Six is looking towards the crowd to source its production. According to the peripheral’s Kickstarter page, the Delta Six will be available between July and August next year, boasting compatibility with the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U and even the OUYA. Pitching in $89 buys the basic submachine gun body (with a free rifle attachment for first-week buyers), and subsequent levels tack on additional attachments, bonus items and more. Kotkin needs $500,000 to make his rifle-shaped dream a reality. Like-minded FPS gamers can join him at the source link below. Not a dreamer? Feel free to read on for the official press release (plus a video and an additional image), instead.

Steam Greenlight adds non-gaming category for your consideration

Steam Greenlight adds nongaming category for productive apps

Indie game makers have been lobbing titles over Gabe Newell’s fence for a short while, but now his company is inviting everyone else to join in as well. Valve has widened Steam Greenlight’s crowdsourced approval process to include non-gaming software, with the community voting the most popular and useful apps onto Steam’s virtual shelves. We’re thinking of submitting a program ourselves, that calculates the time required for three quantities of a decaying substance to fall to half their value, just so we can see everyone’s faces when Half-Life Three appears on the list.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II for Wii U will not support Elite

The newest installment of the Call of Duty series is set to arrive on November 13 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, with the Wii U version arriving five days later on November 18. However, according to Activision, Black Ops II for the Wii U will not support Call of Duty Elite within the foreseeable future.

Activision told Kotaku that it they “are currently evaluating options for Call of Duty Elite to support Nintendo’s Wii U game system, however Call of Duty Elite for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will not support this platform when the game launches on November 13th.” Of course, the Wii U version doesn’t launch until the 18th, but we understand what they mean.

The Call of Duty Elite service will be a completely free service that is launching alongside Black Ops II. It will feature stat tracking, social options, and the ability to download map updates throughout 2013 (if you spring for the $50 season pass, that is). We’re not sure what kind of impact this will have on the Wii U version of the game, but Call of Duty fans surely won’t be too happy.

If you didn’t catch the launch trailer for Black Ops II that released yesterday, there’s still time to look it over and get excited for the next installment in the series. From the looks of it, Blacks Ops II will feature all the cool explosions that you love, as well as what look to be some interesting single-player campaign levels.

New Angry Birds Star Wars teaser features the Millennium Falcon

Star Wars is popular — that’s about as simple as you could put it. So it’s no wonder that companies and brands are licensing the movie franchise in order to boost sales. Microsoft did it with their Xbox 360 and Motorola with their DROID 2. Rovio has now joined in on the fun and released another teaser trailer for Angry Birds Star Wars that will surely whet your appetite.

The teaser features a short snippet from A New Hope where Han Solo explains to Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi that his Millennium Falcon “made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.” Then, we see an Angry Birds version of the Millenium Falcon which looks to be having a little trouble getting up to light speed, but with the help of a familiar slingshot, the ship eventually gets there.

Obviously, George Lucas failed to realize that a parsec is actually a unit of distance and not time (equal to 3.26 light years or approximately 19.2 trillion miles). We’re not sure if Rovio noticed Lucas’ mistake, but they seemed to just run with it anyway. Sadly, the teaser trailer is all the info we have so far.

However, it could mean the Millennium Falcon will play a critical role in the gameplay, and the slingshot on the back of the ship may suggest that we could soon find ourselves launching angry birds off of the ship’s deck, but we’ll mostly just have to wait until the game’s release on November 8 to find out.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II launch trailer released

We’re just under a month away from the release of Treyarch‘s sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops. The official launch trailer for Black Ops II has hit the internet airwaves and it’s about as action-packed as you would expect. There’s guns, helicopters, tanks, sentries, and weird attachments that make soldiers fly.

The trailer features AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, which is probably one of the most cliched songs that Treyarch could pick for this kind of trailer, but nonetheless, it makes the gameplay feel more vibrant and it most likely references some of the things we’ll see in the game like camouflage suits, spy drones, and anything else that screams stealth.

If you’re looking forward to the new game, you might be happy to know that Call of Duty Elite will be completely free for Black Ops II gamers. Features such as stat tracking and social options will be available right alongside the game, and for $50, you’ll be able to grab four map updates throughout 2013.

It seems most of the gameplay shown in the trailer takes place in the near future, but there are small hints that suggest some of Black Ops II’s levels may be set in the past. Of course, we’ll have to wait until the game officially releases on November 13. Black Ops II will be available for the Xbox 360, Wii U, PS3, and PC.

Call of Duty Elite for Black Ops II will be completely free

Call of Duty Elite is a separate service that works alongside the Call of Duty games to provide stat tracking, social options, monthly map updates, and more. The service is dropping its paid premium plans and will be going completely free for Black Ops II gamers when the new title officially launches on November 13.

For $50/year, Elite subscribers had all of the basic features of the free subscription, but also had access to certain challenges and competitions, increased video storage space, and guaranteed early access to DLC map packs. All of this will become free to all subscribers of Call of Duty Elite who buy Black Ops II.

There is one small caveat, though. It seems that early access to DLC is no longer available in Elite, but Activision is giving Xbox 360 gamers the ability to purchase a “season pass” for $50 (or 4,000 Microsoft Points). This will give gamers access to four map packs throughout 2013. Each map pack by themselves normally cost $15 each, but season pass holders will be able to grab them all for $50, saving a total of $10.

As of August, Call of Duty Elite had 12 million subscribers, and 2.3 million of them were premium subscribers. Those 2.3 million subscribers will automatically transfer to the new free service when their subscriptions for Modern Warfare 3 run out. The new Elite services will launch concurrently with Black Ops II next month.

No $50 season pass has been announced for PS3, Wii U or PC yet, but Activision notes that “season pass and DLC map packs may not be available on all gaming platforms.” Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and PC.

Minecraft creator details new 0x10c game, releases footage

Creator of the insanely-popular sandbox game Minecraft has been working on another title for a few months now called 0x10c (pronounced “10 to the C”), and today he revealed some more details about the upcoming game and even released some early gameplay footage to demonstrate the various aspects of the game, like the physics, graphics, and lighting.

0x10c is a first-person space simulator currently being worked on by Mojang, with Markus “Notch” Persson as the lead designer who is the infamous creator behind Minecraft. Notch says the game is inspired by the TV show Firefly, as well as the video game Elite. Gameplay will involve different aspects, such as exploration of other ships and planets, various space battles, and even mining, trading, and looting similar to what you would find in Minecraft.

Notch says that the game will features some interesting twists, like if your ships crashes while you’re trying to land on a planet, it just doesn’t explode, but rather the spacecraft will simply break down and you’ll have to explore for different resources in order to fix it. Currently, there’s no multiplayer, but Notch says that it’s on the to-do list.

We first heard about 0x10c back in April, when Notch first announced the game. It was in its early-development stages and not a lot of details were given at that point, but it looks like the developing team has made a lot of progress so far. However, Mojang says they’re still in the early stages of development, so we definitely won’t see the game’s release before the holiday season.
